Todays project on the R3,and one I've been itching to do for quite some time.

No real snags,OEM wheel came off the splines in less than 5 seconds with a gentle tug and wiggle ;) ,horn working nicely off the centre-push and no airbag light, all thanks to the "plug n play" resistor and mini loom which came with the HKB boss.

Total time about 90 minutes, which included a 20 minute wait after disconnecting the battery before unplugging the airbag. Not too sure yet on the deep dish wheel style(although swapping to a flatter style will only be the work of a few minutes),as it brings the wheel quite a lot closer to you..but being the long leggedy beastie I am,pushing the seat back a couple of clicks wasn't a problem ..and does give much more thigh clearance for heel n toeing..(and yes,I know it needs a good vacuuming!)

A self-modding car :D

I'd leave it wherever it flew off to mate, and just go plateless ;)

Ordered 4 of these bad boys!!!!

Received an email today informing there was no stock and no expected delivery date for more stick, no wonder they were cheap. Was offered Dunlops as a replacement equivalent, only £60 more per tyre!

I hope the rest of the car qualifies as "significantly modified for competition" as, under the new mot regs, removing the drivers airbag on a road car is now a major fail; as in dangerous and can't be driven away.

Many insurance companies are now refusing to cover cars with airbag removed.

Gave mine another quick (2 hour) wash and wax again, then went for a nice speedy little drive with my MX5 friend, apparently she saw flames from the exhaust pipes of Rexi!

Winner!

MOT day, did not start well with a significant blow from exhaust when I gave it "the beans" on the way to test station - just making sure it is properly hot.

Anyway, long-ish story short, the back of the cat had split also a decent hole in link pipe to back box....bugger.

Fortunately, Lewis and the team at LC Rotary sorted me out a 200 cell sports cat and Toyosport back box (very swiftly) and MOT passed with no advisories.

Interestingly, emissions test results were better with the sports cat fitted than with a full size on last year.

As they used to say: turned out nice again.

Had some packaging issues when trying to fit upgraded sidelights, was originally going to use some aluminuim bar but there wasn't enough room, the water-cooling block hit the housing.
IMG_20180609_192516.jpg
Had a look at the options avilible and settled on a liquid filled heatpipe designed for laptop CPUs where the fluid boils and then condenses at the other end, has a thermal dissipation of 120 watts so should hopefully be ok.

Was actually toying with putting a new wheel on the car, but had thought about the insurance ramifications, so will be going the recovering option instead to retain the airbag.

Had my first engine scare today. Gave it a few beeps on the drive (been in traffic/roadworks all week and was frustrated) and the engine promptly lost power and blubbered to a near halt. Drove it gingerly round to my rear drive and it sounded/and felt like a ride on lawnmower.

Anyway turned on the ODB and the coolant was at 117 degrees. Let it cool down then took it for a test drive and it seems to run fine. So hopefully it overheated and the ECU stripped the power... rather than anything breaking [-o< . I'll be getting a compression test next time we're at a specialist tho. Was double silly as I'm booked in for tuning at RRP this week.

Lesson learned, at least until the next time I do it.

Whenever they did they also lost the passenger side metal cover somehow, which must have taken skill #-o
There isn't a metal cover on the passenger side, or even on the drivers side on the very early UK cars, or JDM.

The metal cover was added from 2004, as part of the Thatcham security requirements, to stop someone getting to the back of the boot lock by smashing through the drivers side light unit.
Confused about the metal cover as pit bulls and my RX was 1 of the first in the uk and we have them fitted on ours ImageImage

You don't need a vacuum pump as the drain plugs are at the bottom on the gearbox and low down on the diff.

yeah, know that Chris , maybe wrong choice of words :thumright: Its for putting the new oil in :) , yes the gearbox can be done from inside the cabin, but the diff is the one with access issue, vacuum pump thingy sucks up the fresh stuff and reverses/puts the new stuff in
