Re: RX8 now...... but whats your car history?
Hi.
I like to keep my cars for a while...
From passing my test, I drove the family Cavalier 2.0i (115HP) - great in a straight line.
The first car I owned was a Citroen ZX 1.4i. Very basic (not even power steering) but handled well.
Then I bought a Citroen ZX Volcane 1.9TD. Fantastic car (although basic by today's standards) - quick enough, good handling, good economy and the best seats.
The Volcane was passed to my partner when I got a company car - Seat Leon FR TDi. Initially (well, throughout all my time with it I suppose) I was disappointed with it's turn-in - the Volcane was always much sharper. But the Leon had 2 characters (a bit like the RX-8 I suppose) - happy to do the slow stuff, but coming alive once pressing on. I grew to enjoy it.
In 2008 the Volcane (unfortunately) had to go to make way for a Citroen Xantia Activa. Only around 1100 of these were sold in the UK (around 30 are still on the road, with a few more SORNed), with the 150HP TCT engine (turbocharged for constant torque, much like SAABs of the late 1990s / early 2000s). Sadly the UK never got the 200HP V6, although a few RHD conversions have been done since. The Activa is a remarkable car. It's hydropneumatic system has a roll control system (effectively a switchable anti-roll bar) so it's soft riding and smooth most of the time, but turns into a corner like it's on rails. It almost feels un-natural, but it's great fun. I never tired of it. It was more fun MOST of the time than the 8! As a later review once said, the TCT engine needs 'more thrust and less thirst'. Well, the 8 certainly has more thrust! Can't wait to get some decent tyres on mine, which hopefully will bring it towards Activa sharpness.
My Activa was sold to an enthusiast who has spent around £3k on it in his first 6 months of ownership (including a full respray). It was recently shown at the Citroen dealer's conference at Citroen UK HQ, which I'm sure makes him very proud. And makes me proud somewhere inside too.

Re: RX8 now...... but whats your car history?
2001 Toyota Celica VVTi (140hp) - Sold after a year purely because it was too slow Totally reliable though and a great first car!
2004 Honda Civic Type-R (EP3) - Sold after a year. Had a crash and even after repair it never felt quite right and had loads of random electrical problems. Great fun to drive and sounded really good too.
1999 Nissan Silvia Spec-R Aero (S15) - Sold after 3 years. Loved the car but was starting to become a pain to live with, developing oil leaks, collapsed catalytic converter, issues with turbo lines, hesitation under throttle etc. It ended up starting to rust quite badly and at the time I just didn't have enough time to invest in getting everything fixed. It also sounded like a tractor; this was thankfully cured with the addition of a HKS Silent Hi-Power
2008 Renaultsport Clio 197 - Sold after less than a year. I really didn't gel with it, it used almost as much petrol as the RX-8 (averaged 22mpg), the keyless locking was forever failing and the suspension was both extremely fragile and ridiculously expensive to fix. I hated the thing by the time I sold it and it convinced me to go back to Japanese.
2008 Mazda RX-8 231 - No complaints as yet (aside from it turning any money I get into petrol )

Re: RX8 now...... but whats your car history?
My car histor is so much more boring than everyone else’s!
When I had my provisional licence I did get given by my grandad his rover metro to learn to drive it that was quite cool and retro, and learning to drive in a manual choke car with no abs or mod cons was quite interesting especially as I only passed about 7 years ago and everyone else was learning to drive in nice new cars.
Most my cars were little 90’s hatchbacks with 0litre engines ( or it felt like it) bought for as long as the mot lasted and then scrapped. I had loads of these, Ford Fiesta mainly, corsa b- I will never own one again. I hate these type cars. So they are barely worth talking about.
The last car I owned before getting the rx8 was a 2ltr Hyundai coupe. I modified it, a little. I really like this car had it about 3 years, but it eventually became more fix it that mod it as it really started to age. The car engine eventually gave up and died at 250,000.
Did think about getting another but even de-badged and painted as it was Hyundai it wasn’t seen as good enough for shows especially when you have to apply for stand places writing down your make and model.
But it’s nice now having a lot more luxuries and new challenges with the rx8, cant compare it to any of the cars in my history, it feels like a huge jump to own it. Still a bit of a wow I can’t believe I have this .

Re: RX8 now...... but whats your car history?
My list of the good, the bad and the downright horrible!
Vauxhall Viva HC
Ford Capri 1.6
Talbot Horizon, I must have lost my marbles with this one!
Ford Capri 2.0
Ford Escort XR3i
Vauxhall Astra GTE
Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6l - this is where I became family man! Plus a second car Ford Orion 1.6GL. We became a 2 car family!
Traded the Orion for a Volvo 740 2.0l GL 7 seater estate. What a car!
Traded the 740 for an 850 2.5l 20v. I loved this car couldn't afford the T5R but this could embarrass Golf GTi owners!
Gave the Cavalier away after many years service and 200,00 miles! Probably the most reliable car I have ever owned, still on original engine, gearbox, clutch.
Peugeot 306 estate 1.9d bought for a bargain, as I was driving high miles to work.
Traded the 306 for a Citroen C5 which I bought off a mate. Massive spec but thirsty for a diesel and parts cost a fortune, so:
Traded for a Volvo S80 D5 with a good spec, another great car.
Sold 850 and bought a new Volvo v50 the first new car we owned.
Traded V50 for a brand new V60 which we still own. A really nice car as it happens, my daily drive and I cannot see me parting with it anytime soon!
Traded my beloved S80 for a Mercedes SLK 200, my wife's dream car! Was supposed to be my choice of a new toy but women rule! Probably keep this car forever!
The RX8 I got the weekend toy eventually!

I'll add mine; I won't post pictures of them all. I'm 31 and been driving since I was 17...
1. 1997 Mazda 323F 1.5 GLX
2. 1998 Mazda 323F 1.8 Executive

9. 2006 Audi A4 2.0TFSI Quattro Limited Edition
10. 2001 Alfa 147 1.6TS Lusso
11. 1999 Alfa GTV 2.0TS
12. 2004 Audi A8 4.0TDI

14. 2002 MG ZT+ 190 (Monogram Gulfsteam 1 of 5 made)
15. 2006 Mazda RX-8 231ps
As you can see I'm a sucker for italian ladies in red dresses. Which was the best; Audi A8 had it all and was just a complete power house. It had straight through cat-back pipes too, so sounded monsterous, however the Alfa GTA has got to be the best, limited slip diff, pearl paintwork and rare as hens teeth. Miss that car!
