Re: RX8 now...... but whats your car history?

Post by Dom-PZ »

Ignoring 2x 1.1 Saxos as they were standard and my Dad's, the first car I owned was one of the BMW minis when they were first released. I was 18, had just started my first full time job and was a BMW fan. So, one PCP contract later and I was the proud owner of a brand new MINI Cooper. All the talk of it not being a real mini was rubbish - it was uncomfortable, it rattled and it leaked. It was a typical British car.

Image
(photo taken after I'd added tints and stickers)

I didn't help matters when I ripped the back seats out and replaced them with more stereo, rattled a bit more then.
Image

But, that was an in-car MP3 player in 2002!

Unfortunately (or fortunately), house purchase bought finances back down to earth and so the MINI was returned to standard and made way for something else inappropriate for a teenager:

A 1992 BMW 318is
Image

This was duly treated to some AC Schnitzer replica wheels and subsequent angle grinder to the arch (I bet that rusted well afterwards), along with a supersprint catback exhaust. To be fair to it, it was a better car than I appreciated at the time, but my head was turned and it had to make way...

1994 Toyota Starlet GT Turbo
Image

Perhaps the first of the "I wish I knew then what I know now" cars. Japanese only model, 1.3 turbo pushing out ~160bhp after I'd upped the boost to about 1 bar, just under, fitted a turbo-back exhaust and used a rising rate fuel pressure regulator to up the fuelling to suit. I would definitely have approached that differently now! However, it was about 800kg or so and it was quick. My greatest memory of was demolishing a civic type r that was on a test drive. I saw the salesman tell the driver to pull up along side me at a 3 lanes into 2 set of traffic lights to demonstrate how quick the type r was against this boy racer. I do wonder if he ever made that sale. I wish I kept it and gave it some of the treatment that the later cars got, but I was a bit naïve and fancied a change in direction...

1986 Land Rover 90
Image

It did come with doors and a roof (a truck cab), but it was warm so this was just turning the air conditioning on. Of all the cars I should have kept, I think this would top the list. There was so much I could have done to it, in the end it was a set of wheels, a soft top hoop pretending to be a roll bar and some lights

Image

In the end, I sold it because I became a parent where as I think if I'd pushed through the inconvenience of not much seating and trying to fit a baby into a child seat, it would have been great once they were a toddler. It's not all bad for it though, the guy who bought it from me did a V8 conversion.

But, sensible car required so:

1990 BMW 318is
Image
Image

With the full M-Tec kit, supersprint exhaust (again) and Alpina (replicas from memory) wheels, it was perhaps the best looking car I've owned, certainly it was at the time. Interestingly I'd meet the owner before the owner before me on a car forum for a completely different marque. It had an LSD so was the first car I "skidded" and it probably flattered me somewhat... until it bit. I didn't hit anything or damage anything but my confidence, but it was completely out of the blue and I did end up on the green stuff rather than the grey stuff. In hindsight, I should have just got the alignment looked at but I didn't know better and I'd lost confidence in the car and my ability to deal with a slide, so it was sold to someone who'd wanted it for a while.

1993 VW Golf 1.8 Driver
Image

Bought it with broken suspension so fitted some new stuff, dropping it 70mm. I was expecting more from it, being a 1.8, so it's here that I'm starting to learn that just because it's 200cc down on the GTi, doesn't mean it's nearly as good! In the end it was further styling mods only and it all got a bit scene before we started calling it scene

Image

In the end, the lack of power got to me so I returned it vaguely back to standard and traded the wheels and some cash for a...

1994 VW Golf GTI 16v
Image

A good car, better than the usual mk3 stories. Bodyroll was a little excessive for a GTi, but it was quick enough and handled well enough. Did the job and probably would have done me for a few years. As ever though, an itch needed scratching...

1989 Range Rover Vogue SE
Image
Image
This was a revelation. Visually, it was everything you'd expect a £900 Range Rover to be. Mechanically, it was fine, a bit thirsty but fine. Easily the most comfortable car I'd owned and would for a long time. It was like driving an armchair, you just wafted everywhere. MPG would see it removed from ownership though, I was being offered a car from my parents' neighbour for a good price that just made massive economic sense. Shame as I was just fitted a complete stainless exhaust system, from the heads backwards. It sounded awesome!

1999 Rover 200 BRM
Image
Image
Image
Image

Once you got over the orange grill (which didn't even make it out of the dealership for this one before being resprayed), this was a really good car. A Rover 200, with the 1.8 VVC engine, decent suspension, LSD, close ratio gearbox. This was a great car that just didn't need modifying! A real unsung hero of the era, makes you wonder what could have been if they'd have forgone the orange grill and fitted some sportier seats. But then, without it, you lose the BRM connection. Absolutely loved this car, even when the headgasket did the obligatory thing. In the end, it was because it didn't need anything doing to it that I sold it - I had modifying itches to scratch and now I was starting to learn stuff...

1995 BMW 328i SE Touring
Image
Image

All the toys (of the time), none of the looks! I like fast estates, still do, and in the absence of an M3 touring, this was it. The idea was to find a written off M3 and swap the bits over, but there was plenty to do first. The first of which, coilovers, as who doesn't love a low estate?

Image
Image

This was probably the first major mechanical job I'd done myself and whilst it's simple looking back on it, it really did kickstart an awful lot of me. I suppose you could say that those budget FK coilovers have cost me a fortune in the long run! Shortly afterwards I fitted some adjustable top mounts (which also lowered it another 10mm, doh!)

Image

I had it all aligned to some settings recommended on a forum and I'd suddenly realised what suspension setup can do to a car. It was so much better, turn in was so positive and it seemed to really respond in a way that only the RX-8 and MX-5 have come close to since.

It was also treated to a set of Corbeau Boss seats up front and a set of 18s which set it off quite well
Image

I'd also picked up some E46 330i brakes (including appropriately sized master cylinder) but ran out of cash before I could get an M3 (or an LS3 conversion kit I was hankering after as well). It was also an expensive way to get extra power so I sold it on and the first guy to drive it bought it. He later completed the M3 conversion, but with another E36 touring having passed this one on to his son.

1998 Nissan 200SX
Image
Image

This wasn't what I hoped it would be, but it carried on teaching me so in hindsight, it was still a positive move. The handling was nothing like the BMW, much more loose. The speed however, was much better. It was standard aside from that exhaust, so I went about fitting the uprated fuel pump, electronic boost controller, bigger intercooler and some other bits and bobs to take it to around 260-280bhp. It was the quickest I'd owned by that point and felt like a bit of a hooligan. The BMW was much better at not shouting about its speed, but that's maybe because it also had less of it.

It would later be traded in to kickstart a serious project but in the meantime, I'd embarked on 2-car ownership with no real logic other than it was in the family and it was cheap.

1994 Discovery Executive*
Image
* they never did an Executive - for some reason it had a trim badge from a Honda on the back.

It was already lifted with the metal bumpers and protection, and it ran on chip fat. Mmm that smelled good! All it needed was a set of wheels and tyres and it was ready to hit the lanes
Image

Had a lot of fun in that, it turned over 200k miles in my ownership and the only thing that ever stopped it was the biodiesel dislodging stuff in the fuel tank and blocking the filters. Could easily be swapped over at the side of the road though, and one time a mere bump fixed it before it had even stopped!

Also, better brakes than a Saxo. Officially.
Image

I'll pause it here, because the story starts to take off and this post is long enough as it is

1996 MX5 1.8i
Image
Image

That's what the 200SX was traded for - a poverty spec MX5. No electric windows, no power steering, just pure basics. Nothing to go wrong (though naturally, it still did) and simple to spanner on. For a long time I'd wanted to build a Westfield and this was to be the donor car. There's considerably more story here - viewtopic.php?t=78300.

To cut it short:
Image
And the Westfield would see considerable transformation over the next 9 years!

Whilst that was being built though...

1995 BMW 318i SE Touring
Image
Yep, it was back. Using the green discovery as a daily driver wasn't proving too comfortable and biodiesel was getting hard to source, so I man math'd myself into a third car. I couldn't decide what car would be best (well, it wouldn't be a 2.8l BMW if I could) and I just happened to ask the guy who bought it if he was still using it. Turns out, he wasn't, and here it is. The wheels it had ended up on his M3 conversion and this got the M3 wheels.

I ran it for a few months, took it to France and generally got reacquainted before I man math'd myself back down to 2 cars. Both this and the discovery were sold on and replaced with...

2001 Land Rover Discovery V8i ES
Image
Image

This became the "do everything" car. It did the daily commute. It did the long distance journeys. It towed the Westfield to track days, it did some greenlaning. All at RX-8 levels of fuel usage  On the whole it's been great, but it's been needing some expensive repairs recently and having done them, I've retired it for now. I think I might make a tomcat out of it, but for now, it's having a well earned rest. Rusting and breaking I suspect.

1999 BMW 523i SE
Image
Another waftmobile this one. I didn't go looking for this, it was my Dad's, who bought it new and in the 14 years since put just 60k on it. He needed it gone as was getting a motability car for Mum, so I bought it and drove it around for a bit before selling it on and sending the profit back his way.

The Discovery would continue as the daily driver for another year before man maths struck again, or a phase of a mid life crisis. Not sure which.

2005 MINI Cooper S Works
Image
The Discovery was starting to get less reliable so of course the right thing to do was buy another British car. Heading back to my youth this time, but "upgrading" to a spec that wasn't available then. It had the full 210bhp kit, along with the JCW brakes (which I think are off a 318 or something like that). I'd had it two weeks before ordering the next car, so gave this one to my partner and it's also since been retired, currently in the bodyshop getting some TLC.

2014 Renault Zoe
Image
I love this photo, it's like the tree was the perfect shape for parking next to!

An ultimate man maths car. The Zoe was new and Renault wanted to get them out there so had some great PCP and battery rental deals. I could purchase and run the car, with minimal deposit, for less than the fuel I was putting in the Discovery every month. It was very much "white goods" motoring and I fully intended to hand the car back at the end of the 4 year term. This car was brilliant, I kind of wish I'd kept it, but being battery rental instead of owned it was always going to have a monthly cost and so it made more sense to bide my time until the new Zoe was out.

2006 Mazda RX-8 PZ
Image
Whilst I was biding my time, I intended to "try" a few cars. First up was the RX-8 as I'd never have a rotary before. Nobody here will be surprised to know that I didn't get any further through the list of cars to try, this was just too good! Still got it, though like the Discovery and the Mini it's also retired and awaiting its turn for a mini restoration. I think retired means cars I don't use anymore but still don't want to sell!

2007 Citroen C1 Vibe
Image
Yet another case of man maths! I purchased this to relieve the RX-8 of the daily urban commute and it was absolutely perfect. It had done just 30k files from new (11 years old when I bought it) and, much like the MX-5, had no options ticked at all. Manual windows, not even central locking! Lock down put an end to the fun though, so it got a quick track day (ok, not quick) and shipped off to a trader for a nice easy sale.

1999 Mazda MX-5 V-Spec
Image
The problem with the RX-8 is how good the engine is. It sent me down the path of converting the Westfield, which meant I had an MX5 turbo engine with nothing to do. Being sensible, I bought an MX5 for it! This is a good one (aside from some bodywork issues) with Tein suspension, wilwood brakes (incidentally, partially from my Westfield) and a Cusco LSD which can be best described as enthusiastic. I've got a lot of garage tidying to do, but with 340bhp+ this is going to be a hoot!

2007 Range Rover Supercharged Vogue SE
Image
With the Disco losing a bit of trust, and working from home being confirmed as "the new normal", I treated myself. The MX-5 would become the daily driver and this would take on the towing and any long distances. It does both with so much ease it's ridiculous. I'm sure I'll fall out of love with it at the first big bill (that isn't the petrol station), but this is just in a different class to anything I've owned before.

2021 Renault Zoe
Also in the above picture, replaces the MINI to do the daily drive for my partner. Battery is significantly bigger than that of the previous Zoe. This one will do 200 miles, where as the previous was 80-100 on a good day or 60 in winter.

So that brings us up to date:
Active
1999 Mazda MX5
2007 Range Rover Stupidcharged
2021 Renault Zoe

Awaiting spannering
2012 Westfield

Sleeping
2006 Mazda RX-8 PZ
2001 Land Rover Discovery V8i ES
2005 Mini Cooper S JCW

The Mini will probably be the first to be sold, then I'll start the mini restoration (probably too strong a word, tidy up?) of the RX-8

I've had far more little 125cc motorbikes and scooters than cars, but at some point I had to grow up and join the 4-wheeled gang...

- 1990(?) Audi 80
An absolute tank of a car  my first car, bought for £1 from a friend who was being posted abroad, needed £200 spent to pass it's MOT, I sold it soon after!

- 1990 BMW 318i
Picked up for £200 from the corner of a car dealers yard, a sorry looking part-ex with laquer peel on the bonnet. My first RWD car, I didn't know how much fun they could be until I accelerated away from a junction in the wet and was suddenly aware I wasn't going in the direction I'd intended  brown trouser moment, but great fun!

- 1992 Mazda Eunos Roadster 1.6
Where the modifying began.... Went from a stock 116Bhp NA car to a 200Bhp Turbo  I had this for 6 great years, but sold it to get a more "practical" car.
STA70174-1 (1)__01.jpg
MX5motors117.jpg
- 1998 Rover 600 Diesel
Yes, Grandad's comfy car  bought cheaply to munch the motorway miles in comfort and save the Eunos Roadster from racking up the miles as I was working down in Kent and driving to/from Yorkshire most weekends. Even ran this on old veg oil! Never let me down. Some Polish chap bought it and exported it to Poland!

- Peugeot 106
A long term loan from my brother, actually a fun little car to drive, also helped save the Eunos from excess mileage.

- 2003 Citroen Berlingo 2.0 Hdi
The "Family car"/ "Pope Mobile"/ "Mobile Fishtank", practical but uninspiring, roomy though. No major issues but needed something doing every single year.

- 2004 Mazda RX8 231
I needed something more sporty, and this was well priced and had already been modified which meant I shouldn't need to do anything to it... Streetport, Mazdaspeed body kit, R-Magic wing etc... I only sold this as a practical company car came. One car I do regret selling...
Screenshot_20180513-121202__01.png
20180513_121319.png

- 2009 Mazda RX8 40th Anniversary
Aaaaaand..... Back to an RX8  company car had become company van, so I really needed something with 4 seats and a bit of fun.... Hmmm.... what car fits that bill? :-k :D

Varied, some interesting, some dull!
In order:
Ford Capri 1.6 Cabaret - ooh special edition, died when someone pulled out of their drive into the side of it
Ford Capri 1.6 Calypso - which we added a XX pack wide arch kit to, coz at 18, why wouldn't you
Rover 214 SEI - little go kart of a thing
Nissan Primera 2.0TD - no, I don't know why either
Volvo S60 - because the 5cyl petrol turbo was ace
Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Lusso - everyone's gotta own an Alfa
Saab 9-5 Turbo - The most neurotic car I've ever owned. At one point the whole ignition system packed up, and saab specialists said "yeah they do that"
Mazda 6 Gen 2 TS2 - awesome car tbf, never ever let me down
Jaguar XF - Wanted a Jag, but couldn't stomach the community. Posts asking for help were often met with "why do it yourself, just take it to a garage. Nope, not for me
Mk 5 Golf GTI - Loved it, would have another, but this one was mapped a bit high and always felt like it was gonna explode when you stepped on it a bit
Volvo XC70 - Wanted a wagon, AWD. Capable thing, but don't need a big car anymore soooo...

What else did £23k get you in 2005? Seems like good value...?

Ha, interesting to compare original dealer purchase invoices for our cars. No discounts were offered by any dealers on RX-8's back then, the best I managed to get was free "Supaguard" treatment, worth £199 if I'd bought it, which included a bag of cleaning goodies - not much on a £20k+ car.

Maybe, at best case, let's say my car is worth £4,000, that's a depreciation of £19,000 over 17 years, or (in simple terms) only ~£1,000 a year.

(We'll ignore the many £1000's on engine rebuild, parts and servicing shall we ;) )

Worth every penny
