RX-8- How Did YOU Get There? And the award goes to..........
I've seen a lot of chat on here about the cars people owned in the past and others they own now. As a relatively young driver i think i've had more than my fair share of cars and recently i seem to follow a pattern in buying- practical to sporty to practical and so on.....
So i'll get the ball rolling with my automobile family tree!
S Reg Peugot 106 1.4 (written off by an old git)
S Reg Toyota Corolla 1.3 (a gift from the Gran)
V Reg Volvo V40 1.6
T Reg Hyundai Coupe 2.0 SE
New Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDCI (God damn deisels)
54 Reg Vauxhall Monaro 5.7 V8 (a stupid buy but fun!)
New Mazda Premacy 1.8 GLS

Hehe. My history is quite haphazard but here it goes:
1963 Land Rover Series IIA SWB Ford Fiesta Seats, rebuilt the engine myself, still runs apparently, sold because of MPG that would make an RX8 blush.
1989 Austin Rover Maestro 1.3 Clubman, three radiators and a clutchcable, sold for a tenner
1988 Austin Rover Maestro 1.3 L Wheel bearing failed
1987 Ford Fiesta 1.1 Popular Short time drive, scrapped when front cross member broke under braking, front links on suspension ripped out.
1983 Volkswagen Golf 1.3L Early Mk II, took no end of abuse, sold it an old lady who never drives it, just washes it.
2000 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 LS Company Car, it is a bad idea to give a 20 year old CarYob anything with a modicum of power and absolve him of all responsibility for its running cost. It had two new gearboxes in 3 months after some speed testing and burnouts!
1996 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 LS Company Car, Fleet wreck given to me after second gearbox in nice astra, died when I tried to take a roundabout at 80 on the day I was leaving the job!
1991 Rover 218D No turbo, No Power Steering, did 55mpg, I did over 25,000 miles in this car without a hitch. My sister spun it into a hedge.
1995 Ford Mondeo 1.8TD LS First half decent car bought with my own money. Used to do 450 miles on a tank of diesel. Survived an encounter with a motorway crash barrier. Still running with new front wing.
1999 Ford Mondeo V6 Si First car with proper power I bought, used to cruise from home to various naval bases at ridiculous speed in it. Survived being run into by a woman in a peugeot at some traffic lights and spun into a bank by me. V6 made a lovely growl, handled well for a big old bus.
1991 Range Rover Vogue SE Drunken Ebay impulse purchase. Drove it for six months before the V8 started making nasty noises, have harboured desires to restore it with a new bigger motor and more power but I am now resigned to ebaying it for peanuts. It's got a good chassis, bodywork okay, interior good, transmission good, new tyres and it still ran when I parked it up.
2004 Mazda RX8 230 Sunlight Silver. Just behind the oil cap (new rotary one, Cheers Velocity_RXB) is the small hole where I am pouring all my money, but I don't care, without a lottery win I don't reckon I could get a better car! It'll soon be lower, stiffer, faster and even louder! My tacit objective is to make it into a proper trackday weapon without making too big a compromise on everyday use.
That's just the cars I've had long term. If you include the parents stuff I've used the list could go on forever!

Morris Ital
Austin Metro
Austin Maestro
Peugeot 309 GLX
Peugeot 309 GTi (briefly, damn thing self-combusted)
Peugeot 306 XSi
Honda Civic Type-R
Citroen AX 1.5D (bought as a learner car for the wife)
mk-2.5 Mazda MX-5 1.8 (bought by the wife the minute she passed her test)
Mazda RX-8
Apart from the BL rubbish and the flammable 309, I don't tend to change cars very often. I had the first 309 for three years, the 306 for about four years, the Civic for three and a half. We've had the RX-8 for two and a half years and expect to keep it for four, maybe five. The MX-5 we've had for three and a bit years and will probably keep for another couple.

some nice cars people have had. I like toyotas and think of them a bit like Mazdas- stuff the prestige badge! A few Honda owners as well which is good to hear. I wonder if Maxda will ever follow with an RX-9 and what that will be like
in my limited experinece of other cars, the RX-8 is by far the most fun to drive. It has a kind of solid feeling mixed with high power and great handling.
My dad described it as though he was sitting on top of an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) bomb. An odd description i thought at first but it does have that 'electric charge' feeling.
Are the any repeat RX8- Owners. i.e have owned more than one since 2003?
keep em coming...........

Although I am only 24 I have had quite a range of cars.
Been rallying MY Mk II Escort on and off for years since I was 15(Miine is a real heap but the Escort is still one of the best rally cars ever and it's fully specced up for rallying,) + loads of other loaners such as GrpN WRX, 206, Ignis, Mk I Focus, 205,Etc.
1999 T RB5 Ltd Ed. 3465/444 Subaru Impreza Rare-ish , Cheap(er) to insure , Not quite as swift as a proper WRX .
Learnt on the road in 1986 Suzuki Alto FX  (800CC Beast!)
54 Civic Type R Aniversary in nighthawk black. (OLD style way better independant suspension, quicker, more hardcore)
Peugeot 406 Coupe (Absolutly stunning looks well equiped 3.0 V6 with Brembos! BUT Slowish Gutless engine, crap build quality and electrics and wallowy handling)
Focus ST-3 (Electric orange bought private 2nd hand sold 3 months later -220 pounds )
K Reg LANCIA INTEGRALE white with full martini racing rally livery. Bought for 9.4K insured for peanuts through family friend sold 9 months later for 10.1K! to enthusiast mechanic due to expensive engine rebuild being needed.
Bought brand new in 05 MG ZR 1.8 160 when they went cupput (Very impressed with this car rugged thrashable gearbox and steering and rev hungry K-series engine) Cost me 4500 depreciation over 2yrs 7mths when P/Xed.
W Reg BMW 530d SE Co-Owned (Torquetastic RWD, pretty swift 0-60 sub 7 secs , BUT Auto + Diesel )
04 RX8 (Gorgeus, great handling, unique, love it just want more POWER!
Quite a few for only 7 years of on the road driving. But I do love my cars and driving and like to tryout a nice variety.

Yeah I completely understand what he means!themodernman wrote: My dad described it as though he was sitting on top of an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) bomb. An odd description i thought at first but it does have that 'electric charge' feeling.
After recently returning from a trip to Switzerland where I had a 2.0 turbo diesel hyundai tucson as a rental, the RX-8 felt "electric" comapred to it .. Smooth, steady free revving and the linear power delivery made it feel like a supercharged electric engine in comparison to the feel of the turdo diesel
It was good to be back in Roxy... I guess you kind of get used to the RX-8 after a while and forget really how good it is and take it for granted!!
