Well I'll continue to be happy when I get 250 miles out of a tank

I still average about 230 😂

Slightly off topic and not to be recommended...when I worked at Gaydon a mate started to brag about his fuel economy. Just so happened I was on Tenerife a bit later (not big enough to empty a tank!) and decided to see how far I could coast from the road at the top - apart from one section about 200 metres long - 18 km towards Puerto! For a while it became a bit of a fad....best one ever was from the Pyrenees in France - 23 km on zero throttle...but there were one or two dodgy moments!!

I FINALLY DID IT!!! (Yes I was celebrating haha makes a change to my usual 260-280 miles a tank)This was with some pops and bangs and pulls along the way but was mainly at about 60mph as I was following my dads jag that was pretty much limping home with a breaking engine

After filling up and doing the maths it had 2 litres of fuel left in the tank

After various missed opportunities over the years, I finally joined the club today.

A 220 mile round trip to Krown at the weekend meant that I could get there on 2 days of commuting with some careful driving.

After a half mile detour to get the distance, I rolled on to my drive having just ticked over 300.

I've had the gauge lower in the past, so wasn't particularly worried.Image

I was beginning to believe that it was impossible to get those sorts of miles from one tank, and then I saw an email I sent to the guy I bought the car from back in 2013 - it said......330 miles in 5 hours from his place in Scotland - those were the days. It has been off the road for a while, but I am aiming to get it MOT'd and taxed over the next month fingers crossed!

I achieved the 350 driving from Falkirk to Cheltenham last year. Falkirk to south of the lakes at 70 to 80 then a steady 70 for the rest, minimal delays around Brum. The drive after the light came on just got more and more tense as the 350 got closer and closer!
It can be done at sensible speeds and its not to boring on average due to the tension of the last 15 miles or so when the needle has sunk past the last marking!!!

I picked up my new '57 231 from Stirling on Saturday with a 400+ mile journey ahead of me back to London. I stopped off in Birmingham which netted me 318 miles, and I still had 1/4 tank of fuel left!! I did pop some more fuel in before setting off again, but I reckon there was 400 miles in the old girl!

Got my first 300 mile tank today which included a 15 minute tazz around castle Combe on Saturday 🙂.

303 miles, 52 litres is about 26.5 mpg.

Then when I was refilling an R3 pulled into the garage behind me so exchanged thumbs up.

Good afternoon. I thought i would put this up in case it helps someone out. Having got the rolling resistance to next to nothing by servicing the brakes i decided to add a deflector following the advice of a mate. whether the deflector does improve mpg or not i don't know, but it certainly keeps the rear of the car much cleaner during wet weather. If i had got a spare gallon of fuel in the boot i would have pushed the car to the limit, but even so, i think 360 miles could have been achieved. Rolling resistance is, in my opinion the most doable way to increase mpg, thanks, rob. :thumright:

It's a good observation, but it will be a negligible contribution one way or the other. Driving conditions is the single biggest factor on an 8. A stock S1 8 can do over 400 miles if the drive is just motorway cruising. If it's anything other than that it'll drop right down.

For example, on my bridgeported idiot build I've done over 130 miles to the first 'quarter' but my drive finished off negotiating the centre of Manchester and I was down to half by 175 miles. Lots of stop start traffic, accelerating (not aggressively) and idling are what kill average MPG in an 8 - wind resistance is the least of our worries 😂

The wife and i are off to Norfolk shortly, a one way trip is 260 miles from us. It will be interesting to test the mpg on that run as it will be mainly motorway, only starting from cold once and steady cruising for a big part of the day, btw, how much is fuel in Norfolk?

If you can sit at 60mph fairly consistently then you'll see ~31mpg assuming all is good.

The best fuel saving thing you can do in an 8 is go to the loo and bring bottled water. Stopping at the services is the biggest enemy for an 8 on a long cruise, but still easily doable.

Play your cards right and you'll get somewhere around 2/3 of a tank used for those 260 miles

Cruising on the motorway at 70/75 you should be able to get 300 in a S1 and if you are brave 350 but make sure you know where there are several fuel stations close by if you push things that far the overall MPG for that trip I did was 28

Well we are off to Norfolk in an hour or so , so let's see how we get on, this will be the most economical run i shall ever undertake only starting from cold once. I shall take a gallon in the boot and see if i can get near that elusive 400.

It won’t be long now before we hear of an RX8 pulled over on the A14 or A11 with the driver smiling as he pours a gallon of petrol in.
The odometer reading of 401 may be the cause of the smile!
