You can do it, but those who set out to do so are terminally sad!

Re: 300 Mile Club
I have a 192 (Nemesis) and have so far got and average of 21 mpg from the 3 tanks of fuel I have used. This would give me about 250 miles from a tank. I can't say I drive it slowly! and the beep is heard every day! Maybe the 192 is a bit better on fuel?

Re: 300 Mile Club
Would it be worth resetting the ECU prior to this monumentally boring attempt? As surely if like me and a few others, the car is living within the ranges of the higher performance maps permanently. This would allow the car to relearn this boring style quicker?

Re: 300 Mile Club
Managed 25.9 mpg which was 310.6 miles on 54.55 litres. That was with high octane fuel, protek-r and a motorway journey where I accelerated quickly and then sat on the limit in 6th. If a lead footed hooligan like me can do it then anyone can!

Re: 300 Mile Club
I get almost 300 miles on every tank. Although I never have, I'm certain I could get 300 miles, but I always chicken out as I always happen to refuel in the same station near my house, and getting 300 requires driving with the light on for >30 miles. It's hair raising, but I think there's always enough left in the tank
As others say, I do a lot of motorway driving (Glasgow to Blackburn daily commute, so lots of M8)
Closest I got I think was 294 miles when I got to the petrol station

Re: 300 Mile Club
Managed this a few weeks back driving around Mid Wales over a week - long and short journeys. This was after i had a good chat about the car with a guy living nearby who works for Prodrive and did the RX8 Experience days. He said i could get 30+MPG easily by driving the car properly and not thrashing it lol. I didnt really believe him and just had to try drive it like he told me and I ended up being quite surprised to say the least!
1/4 of a tank left and 293 miles done....
Well past 300miles without the warning light coming on yet 21 miles for one notch on the fuel gauge
The light comes on when you have 2-3 gallons left so 314miles on around 10 gallons is actually 30 MPG I dont think im going to be driving the car like that again though, back to the 230 miles per tank and fun driving that i bought the car for

Re: 300 Mile Club
When accelerating run it gently up to 4k rpm then change up for every gear. Dont change until it reaches 4k unless you are cruising at 60 in 5th - changing to 6th is fine. The 2nd set of injectors kick in at 4.5k rpm so changing at 4k is the best way to avoid using excess fuel, light acceleration is also key and anticipating the traffic/road ahead to avoid uneccessary braking. According to him the engine uses more fuel at low revs to try up the power quicker so avoid accelerating at less than 2.5k unless its 1st or 2nd gear. Learning when to change down also helps.Manic Mechanic wrote:Blimey! Can I ask how he told you to drive - any specific instructions?
Hopefully thats not too confusing its hard to explain by typing but that is basically what he told me.
Also however, i didnt really beep the engine at all during the run except maybe for when i overtook something which wasnt often... not good for the engine over a long period of time and goes against why we bought the car in the first place
A lot of time i was driving the speed was quite steady between 45-55 and didnt really involve any town driving so i cant say how that would affect the MPG. Also, this was in a 231, not sure if the same would apply for a 192, anyone know if the 2nd set of injectors kick in at 4.5k as well?

Re: 300 Mile Club
That's great, thanks for the info. It's the kind of thing that's handy to know when you're in traffic and have little in the way of options with the speed.

400 Mile Club
Hi.
I really was shocked a little bit after I read through this thread and made some conversions from miles to kilometers. Because reaching 300 miles with one tank seems to be pretty uncommon for all of you. I have to say I am driving 30 miles to work each day in one direction - so mostly long trips, no highways and little city driving. Today I filled her up having driven 650km which means 400miles and 9L/100km (convert that by yourself if you use mpg) - which I have to admit is pretty low for me too (40th anniversary model). But 350miles on average can be done without any problem and 300miles is a highway 80mph value! Just dont rev the car up to 5k or higher every time and cruise as much as possible. Doesnt mean you have to pull the car yourself and you cant have fun with it that way...
greetings from Austria!
Harry

Re: 300 Mile Club
I do a 37 mile commute to work and back everyday. Keeping within the speed limit, 30 to 60 mph roads, I'm easily reaching 310 miles from a full tank before the warning light comes on.

Harry,
Good to hear from you.400 miles on a tank sounds unobtainable in an RX8, so I assume these figures are from your other car!
Cheers

Re: 300 Mile Club
I finally managed it today - after reaching almost 300 on every tank (except with Shell Fuelsave where it seemed to drop down to 260 if I was lucky) I actually passed 300

Re: 300 Mile Club
This task is impossible for me!!! Today I went out on a motorway trip. From full tank to 1/2 tank I only got 120 miles out
Constant speed 70mph in 6th, no traffic and slow gentle acceleration. After that I gave up and just drive how I felt like ;p

Re: 300 Mile Club
Another thing that is almost unique about the RX8 is the relatively small differences in fuel consumption experienced in differing journeys/ driving conditions. For example a mix of short town drives and motorways normally results in 20 mpg. Long motorway journeys get to say 24-25 mph. If you can do 25mpg on a full tank you have a range of 325 miles!!! I have managed about 330 on a tank, with some cruising( to get home over the last 40 miles), but that was achieved on a single run with a mix of relatively high speeds.
So interesting to do once and a while to see how far the car will go. Getting to 300 miles should not be difficult to do on long motorway trips, but the difference in cost isnt enough to change the driving style we all enjoy!!
400 miles seems just too improbable, unless you drive is a 400 mile long down hill journey in neutral in Austria!!

Re: 300 Mile Club
Ah yes forgot to say I went into 5th any time there was a slight uphill. Still useful information to know. Though i'm still a little surprised when others can easily get 300 miles and I get nowhere near even on my best behaviour DashDaq reports average throttle pedal position of 15%. Makes me think something might be wrong with mine (even though I have superb performance).
In the last year/5000 miles i've had:
- New spark plugs, ignition coils, magnecor HT leads.
- New K&N Air filter.
- Used 1 bottle of cataclean
- Used up 1 can of BG44K.
- Protek-R in every tank.
- Oil changed 500 miles ago.
- Usually redlined many times a day. Always let the engine warm up first - water at 85 degrees C.
- Tyre pressures kept between 34-36 psi (Vredstein Ultrac Sessantas)
- No crap left in the boot or the car. In fact it's even been stripped of the useless scissor jack and puncture repair kit.
- Never had a CEL.
What else can lead to bad economy?

Re: 300 Mile Club
Understood. Which one out of these is my throttle position? I can see
TP R % (Relative Throttle Position)
In normal driving ranges from 6.3 to 99.8
TP %
15.3 at idle, rising to a maximum of 78 at WOT
TP B % (Throttle Position B)
32.2 at idle rising to high 80s at WOT
Regardless on that motorway trip I did no heavy acceleration and engine was kept below 4000 revs the whole time. Would have expected better.

Re: 300 Mile Club
I tried to have a crack at this today & kept my speed down, but I was 39 miles short of hitting the magic number of 300 miles
Filled up at Tesco this evening, with 261.3 miles showing on the clock & had to fill up,as I live the otherside of Horsham where there are no Petrol Stations, other than extremely high prices for Fuel
Drive was very boring though

Re: 300 Mile Club
I managed to get 320 yesterday, but in the middle of nowhere where all the petrol stations close at night so I had to wait in the car until 7:15AM for a guy to turn up and sell me fuel (nice of him though - the station didn't open until ughhhh
Was tempted to try and drive the 25 miles to the nearest 24 hour station (which was on the route anyway) but didn't want to damage the engine or the expensive cat. Useless RAC said they'd only bring me fuel if I'd actually run out, not just if I knew I was about to. When I refuelled, it took 56 litres I do wonder how far it'd have got me.
Still plenty of beeping and things, no grandpa driving required.
