The RX8 has a set of winter tyres but ground clearance is becoming an issue so she is laid up. The Merc has winter tyres as well and is cutting through no bother 8)

I didn't chance it at all on Thursday said work from home, still not used RX8 since, now its melted though. A total tall by us kept going out in 3 series BMW with large rims low profile tyres and spinning it up all the time, surprised he didnt ding a car somewhere!!

What an awesome weekend that was! The council unloaded an enormous amount of salt on the roads which melted the snow in the day but then this soon re-froze as ice - they should have just let it be. We tried taking my sister's new Kona out as it has the biggest ground clearance, but I couldn't get traction on the ridiculously slight incline opposite so put it back to bed and went everywhere on foot instead. Had a pretty cool 2 mile hike to the next village and back for a social gathering on Thursday night :)

The '8 stayed in the garage while the snow built up

20180302_173712162_iOS (Large).jpg

In the end I caved in and dug the Elgrand out for a spin. 2 tonnes of executive minibus with a big diesel and a slush-matic 'box. Perfect for a bit of winter drifting :)

I didn't have the option to leave mine in the garage last Wednesday. Needing to get 100 miles to Heathrow from Colchester for a work flight to Los Angeles, and the local trains were cancelled.
In patches the snow was up to the door shut and dragging on the R3's underside front splitter. But the car was ace and with a wiggle here, and a touch of gusto there it made it's way past beached vans and struggling hatchbacks. At times it looked like a fish propelled by a waving tail but it didn't get stuck once. I took my low height plastic ramps in case I needed to create some traction en route, but didn't need them.
I only had to stop for a bit when the washer jets froze. But 10 mins of engine warming while stationary sorted that.

DSC_0132.JPG
I'm basking in the LA sun now, but can't stop thinking about how excellent that car was. Fingers crossed it survives the Heathrow carpark without damage as a reward.

Hopefully you're in a normal long-stay carpark as "off-airport" parking are a common killer of 8's.

These are the places where you have to leave them the keys and they bus you to the airport.
The problem is that they move the cars around with the carpark, which is guaranteed to flood your engine.

Not quite as bad as "airport valet parking" where they take your car away and leave it on some local council estate.

You're both right. Thankfully it's in the normal business car park, the quietest at the airport. No chance in hell I'd ever give my 8 to a parking valet. I don't even trust most mechanics with it.

DSC_0210.JPG
I've had this 6.2L V8 hire car for 3 days now. Got it undamaged and in 3 days of using (obligatory) parking valets every panel on the car except for the rear bumper needs a respray. It's going to cost me a packet. If that was my 8 I'd have throttled somebody. Thank the stars we only really have valet parking at those few airport car parks in the UK.

more white stuff falling and on the roads!

always use to be confident driving in snow, i had my first driving lessons in snow. until recently when i aquaplaned one of our other cars in torrential rain very badly, it knocked my confidence hugely. so driving the rex to work through the ungritted country backroads is very nerve testing! nothing like throwing myself into the deep end - having to drive my favorite car with its rear wheel drive on ungritted icy roads its a real test of my confidence for my own driving ability. it handled really well, only a couple of places ion the journey where it felt a little slidey, one point i had traction flashing at me as i tried to get up an icy hill but its not been too bad to drive and it felt a safe drive.
still - i can't wait for summer!

Find an empty space e.g. carpark where there's nothing to hit and take advantage of the slippery conditions to experience how the car feels when sliding under power and/or when the abs kicks-in.

On ice/snow you can do this at walking speeds and it really helps you to recognise how the car behaves and how to maintain/regain control. The lessons learnt in a low-friction environment translate to much higher speed under normal or abnormal (e.g. standing water) conditions.

This is why advanced drivers, e.g. Police, train on skidpans.

i had thought of taking it out and having a play in the snow get a bit more confidence in it (out the way and in an empty car park) but didn't want to risk driving it out the village to get there so its something i haven't done.
Something i want to do in the future is find an experience day which has adverse weather training etc built into it. Theres a few of the tracks near me run them, looks fun as well as gaining more experience and confidence. which can all only be good.

At least your road is flat Bex! Looks very familiar otherwise. :D

Yesterday the 8 was white, today less so, but still needed snow chains to get the Polo out.
