Aluminium Electric Water Pump to help horsepower and cool your hot Rotary

Post by Mazda Rotary Parts » Sun Oct 08, 2017 4:42 pm

For ardent track day users or just owners who want to make sure their Rotary stays nice and cool, used in our own race car for the last four years, this Davies Craig EWP150 High flow electric water pump with aluminium housing will aid cooling and increase horsepower as the power is not drawn from the engine and it also offers an effective way of still cooling your engine after a hard run once the engine is turned off.

With a flow rate of 150 litres per minute, this pump is now the highest flowing water pump of it's kind , can be put on a flip switch, plumbed into the ignition key or a full programmer can be added .

Many think I have another Turbo fitted but as you will see I have this electric water pump sitting below the real Turbo

We need a UK source for these
https://www.rx8performance.com/products ... water-pump
unless that pump fits differently, e.g. directly in place of the existing.

I'm a little surprised that rx8performance don't have a distributor or reseller here in the UK, there would appear to be a slight gap in the market for someone with an existing import system to bring in some of their parts.
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

We were ideally placed to deal with Scott and actually tried to deal with him with very little results a few years back, but unfortunately you really need to trust people to trade with them, they actually used to be known as mindseyeengineering.com before becoming RX8performance

Anyway, I will look into having an adaptor fabricated but the water pump itself can be modified to run one of these pumps by modding or removing the impeller.

That's a good idea, I've got a spare water pump, I'll have a look at it

Re: Aluminium Electric Water Pump to help horsepower and cool your hot Rotary

Morning all,
I've started to make some changes ready for going to am electric water pump. The plan was to get an oem pump, remove the impeller etc and weld it up, then fit the pump in the bottom radiator hose, leaving the thermo stat in and just running a belt between the bottom Pulley and the Alternator (no ac)

However, the protrusion from the water pump fouls the belt run, so i'm just going to make a blanking plate instead from 4mm alloy sheet.

This would also affect the rx8 performance adaptor plate, not sure how they are planning to use it, but to me it seems like the pipes would be very close, if not fouling the belt run.
Something to look into prior to ordering the rx8performance plate if you are considering it

Pipe run from the bottom radiator hose doesn't look like much fun, not about of space down there

Thanks
Matt

Thanks Matt. Useful info. The alternative would be to remove the impeller, but leave the shaft, bearings and pulley on the casting. Then use the pulley as an idler. The belt run would then remain standard, but there would be no water flow restriction for the ewp, and the losses from the idler would be very small.

Yep i had considered that too Pete, i just mainly wanted to highlight the potential issues with the RX8p plate prior to people shelling out nearly £200 for one.

I think i'm commited to fitting a plate at the moment, i like simple, and one less bearing and pulley appeals to my nature.

Yep, I agree Matt, and thanks again (because I may have bought the RX8p plate...)

Just one thing about a flat plate. The standard pump housing has a significant recess which contributes to the size of the water passages. If you use a flat plate you are reducing the cross-section of that part of the water system. I think the feed port for the impeller is already quite small, to speed up the flow onto the impeller, so making it even smaller may be a bad idea.

I think a better way to do it would be to mill a recess into your plate, but you may need to start with plate about 10mm thick, because I think you may need a 6 to 8mm recess. That's getting a bit involved though, so maybe worth a try with a flat plate first?

Will have a look at the water pump and the engine casting once I have it all apart and report back. :-)

Thanks
