I was looking up the RX-7 series numbers and thought it would be nice to have them collated in a thread. Then I decided to add the other RX series. Then I thought I'd add the Cosmo series. Mazda also made some weird rotary versions of other models, such as the pick up.
Mazda had very complex model names, used the same names for different models, and different names for the same models, and ran most of the RX series rotaries at the same time in the 1970s. So producing a simple list of models isn't straightforward. But this is a quick list of the major "RX" cars Mazda has made:
RX-2 : 1970 to 1978 (based on the 616, Capella)
RX-3 : 1971 to 1978 (based on the 818, Savanna, Grand Familia)
RX-4 : 1973 to 1978 (based on the Luce)
RX-5 : 1975 to 1979 (based on the Cosmo CD series)
RX-7
. Series 1 : 1978 to 1980 : SA
. Series 2 : 1981 to 1983 : FB
. Series 3 : 1984 to 1985 : FB
. Series 4 : 1986 to 1988 : FC
. Series 5 : 1989 to 1992 : FC
. Series 6 : 1992 to 1995 : FD
. Series 7 : 1996 to 1998 : FD
. Series 8 : 1998 to 2002 : FD
RX-8
. Series 1 : 2003 to 2008 : s1 (Code SE3. Models: 231, 192, Shinka, Evolve, Revelation, Kuro, Nemesis, PZ, 40th)
. Series 2 : 2008 to 2012 : s2 (Models: Sport, Grand Touring, R3, Spirit R. The UK only got the R3 version)
Mazda also made a parallel series of rotaries called the Cosmo. These were more luxurious cars than the RX series of sports cars.
L10

. Series 2 : 1968 to 1972 : 110S / L10B

HB : 1981 to 1989 (based on the 929 platform)
JC : 1990 to 1996 (included the famous 20B triple rotor twin turbo)

Re: Rotary Model ranges
That's awesome, Pete, thanks.
The RX8 (both series) were defined as SE3P - or just SE3 as you've listed above - I believe, rather than just the S1
