I just tend to think "yeah but my car sounds like it wants to play at 4k whilst cruising, yours sounds like a dying giraffe".

Re: Be Careful out there
LOL. I hate being in traffic that can't make up its mind between 30 and 40 as I'm up and down between 3rd and 4th like a yoyo... 4000 in 3rd is pointless for 40mph, but if you change up to 4th and then people slow down below 35 you need to change down again...i-CONICA wrote:Until two days ago I'd cruise at 30 in 6th!
Trying to keep the gears down is making me feel like everyone is looking at me thinking "that plonker can't find another gear"...
Mind you the other day, I was behind someone who was gradually speeding up and I was waiting for a good point to overtake. After being thwarted for several minutes, at 52mph I decided there was no point looking to overtake anymore (it was a stretch of 50) but only then did I realise I was still in 2nd...

Re: Be Careful out there
Haha, you can, I don't often but it's possible, especially when your just cruising on an open road I do like the sound as Danbass says when it's cruising in 4th around the 4k Markralferoo wrote:Bluff.chriswilloughby wrote:Yes, i was merely cruising in 5th gear at 34/36 enjoying the sun.
Nobody drives at 35mph in 5th in an RX8... Surely? IMHO the RX8 feels unpleasantly sluggish at under 3000 rpm and by my reckoning you'd only be at about 2000.
Although maybe this is why I always have rubbish mpg figures!

Re: Be Careful out there
In my experience you must've got lucky. I was in a car that was clocked and ticketed by a traffic cop in an unmarked BMW so they are out there. He caught up with us, pulled in front and showed us the blues.i-CONICA wrote:I wouldn't worry, he's not a traffic cop, and the unmarked cars aren't calibrated speedos, so they can't pace check you anyway.
I had a similar situation, but I did get pulled.
A BMW came up along side wanting a bit of fun, so I had a look around, gave him the nod, dropped a cog and went for it. There were no cars in front, it was totally safe, dry, warm, good conditions, smooth surface, see miles ahead etc.
Anyway, upon losing the race, a black A3 flashed it's blue lights at me, I had the same sinking feeling, pulled over, bottom lip out, clarkson style, but he was nice as pie, explained he's not a traffic cop, so can't do me anyway, but he saw I was having "a little thing back there", "with that other car", he highlighted some potential dangers and told me to be on my way.
So I wouldn't worry about it that much. He'd have gone after you anyway if he was interested...

They can be in unmarked cars in uniform. That happened to me on the A3 in 2008.

Re: Be Careful out there
Sorry, going to be pedantic here cos I get a bit annoyed with scientific inaccuracies.i-CONICA wrote:Even if the lens/cover was made from sapphire crystal (which would make each unit incredibly expensive), there are things in road dust which are harder than sapphire, like some elements in some concrete mixtures, like corundum (a sapphire isotope).
Different impurities in corundum give different colours. Ruby (red), sapphire (green, blue) are all corundum (aluminium oxide compound). They aren't isotopes.
You can't have a sapphire isotope as isotopes are variants of a single element ( eg carbon) that have the same atomic number but a different number of neutrons.
Here endeth the lesson.

Right, so I fumbled a bit of terminology. The point still stands. Thanks for the lesson. I'm interested in chemistry, just not as well read as you clearly

Re: Be Careful out there
Oh dear, Will, you let yourself down there. Once we get past the lack of a capital letter on the second word , that phrase translates as "none of the unlawful are silicon carbide"Will66 wrote:I believe the phrase is "Nil illegitimi carborundum".
Whilst "Illegitimi non carborundum" may be just as cr@p Latin (it translates literally as "the unlawful are not silicon carbide"), there is no 'correct' version, as any Latin scholar will tell you (me, I've got an "O" Level in Latin, so there). However, being the first version and British, 'Illegitimi non carborundum' must take the prize.
There are many variants on the theme (see Wikipedia here).
For example, there are the following to choose from:
Noli illegitimi carborundum
Nil illegitimi carborundum
Non illegitimis carborundum
Illegitimi nil carborundum
Nil b***** carborundum
Nolite te b***** carborundorum
Nil carborundum ab illegitimati
Illegitimis non carborundum
Nil illegitimo in desperandum carborundum
Nil carborundum illegitamae
Nolite Illegitimos Conterere Vos
Non carborundum b*****

They should be banning those that do 30 in a 60 instead! causing tail backs and frustration which then causes people to make rash judgements on when to overtake......................whilst flicking the bird obviously.

Re: Be Careful out there
I drive home on empty roads every night at 1 or 2am... Just had a nice chat with a police man in an unmarked Focus ST at the lights that was following me for about 2 miles at 40mph in a 30 zone. He said "nice car, just try and get it home in one piece mate."
