In the cold I genray let the engine warm up a little before I drive. 2 mins will usually be more than enough to warm up enough to stop the flooding.

My works terrano is terrible for the biting point. Going from that to the 8 christ, the terrano is so over assisted. The only good thing is even if i forget to change out of 3rd its still pulls away from a dead stop.

As Naz said, let it warm up. I believe it's even advised in the manual.

Nigel, I've heard yours struggle to start a couple of times. I would go and talk to you dealer soon before the warranty expires as it could be sick.

Nigel - get the battery checked. with the colder weather coming in the battery takes a battering. it needs to be in good shape otherwise there will be issues in starting in the winter months.

That doesn't mean they did a compression test...

What figures did you get last November?

I hope it is just a dodgy battery, but this hot start issue does sound worrying... especially if it started eventually without help.

Try to start it again asap.

Sold up, but did have fun with a 192, leather, sat-nav, crest, strakes, grilles, Toyo 'zorst, 6 speed 'box, anthracite wheels, bonnet struts, K&N, debadged boot.

No pistons or boobies, but still expensive.....

What would happen still hasn't been answered yet...

Not everyone has the time to sit around and wait for the car to warm up, myself included especially when I am trying to get to work by 5am.

I have also wondered what would happen if my foot would slip off the clutch in my haste to leave for example...

the car would stall, you may flood the engine and good luck getting it started again and getting to work on time. if you are that worried then let it warm up. it takes less time to warm up than to de-flood. letting it warm up is also cheaper, easier and doesn't damage any of your engine in the process.

there really is only one answer - LET IT WARM UP, and then at least you may be able to push it a little harder too instead of poodling around at 1,500 revs because the engine is still too cold.

:whathesaid:

You have to work hard to stall it when it is stone cold since it revs to 2500 rpm on a cold start. You have to be brutal to stall it at those revs.

To be brutal I wouldn't worry about it unduly. When was the last time you stalled inadvertently? It's not often. If you're using your 8 every day then i doubt you'll stall it.

I'm not sure this is right, I'm not sure the replies are very helpful either.

Letting it sit and tick over uses pots of fuel while going nowhere and it warms up slower. The longer it takes to warm up, the more fuel is washing away your oil in the chambers too.

You don't want to drive at 1,500 revs if its hot or cold either. There's no torque and it uses wide throttle openings to try and mask the fact there's no torque. Oil pressure will also be lower.

I drive gently, but not like a geriatric pensioner when it's cold and use up to 4,000 revs - especially coming out of work where I need to get up to 60.

But if you're worried about stalling it then leaving it to warm up for about a minute before setting off to help prevent stalling it is a small compromise compared to stalling it and potentially flooding it and potentially not getting it started again.
