Copied CD's
I have been meaning to post this for a while.
Found the attached letter in the bumf when I bought my 8.
What are your thoughts, anyone else heard this?

Re: Copied CD's
Maybe its just a ploy by Mazda to encourage the purchase of original CD's
Anyway it doesn't really effect me because I don't own any copied CD's

Buy this and all of your problems will go away (and you can still use the headunit with the Cd stuck in it):

Re: Copied CD's
TBH that sounds like rubbish. I've just compared the first original CD I could find with the first blank I could find and the original is noticably thicker than the blank. Obviously not an exhaustive test but originals tend to be better quality (thicker, stiffer) than cheap blanks.

Re: Copied CD's
I think the problem is more likely to apply to those CDR's with home made labels attached and the el-cheapo non major branded CDR's. The labels tend to come off and stick in the unit or stick the CD in the unit.
Best to use a CDR pen for labeling.
I think the letter above is a dealer generated one based on a few occurences of the problem and Mazda has perhaps commented on the matter.

Re: Copied CD's
It's half pants, half true. As long as the CD you're using bears an official logo (either Compact Disc Digital Audio, Compact Disc Recordable, etc.), then the physical dimensions are exactly the same within specified design tolerances (which are the same for audio CDs as data CDs), so the only thing the player should do is spit them out if it can't read them. A good CDR is exactly the same as a good CDDA. If it doesn't bear one of those logos, then it may not conform to the CD standards (orange book/red book etc.), which means it's physical size may be different (fatter/thinner whatever). Same goes if you stick a label on it - by doing that you're effectively making it non-standard as well. And thinner is probably just as bad as fatter in terms of out of spec, as the mechanism may have trouble handling and thickness it's not designed to.
Upshot is, if you use cheapo knockoff CDRs, and they are that cheap that they don't have one of the logos, then your dealer has every right to make the excuse in the letter. If it does conform to the standards, then irrespective of if it is a CDR/CDRW the letter does not apply - as long as you've not gone and stuck a label on it and messed it up that way (i.e. you have used just marker pen as ta88ycat says).

Re: Copied CD's
Sorry to bring up an old thread but I found something interesting in the handbook regarding using copied cd's.
It says to rub around the edge of a cheaper quality cd-r with a pencil to remove it's jagged edges. Apparently this should prevent the changer from swallowing cd's.
Don't know if this has been discussed elsewhere?

I've yet to have a copied CD rejected by mine.
Sounds like I've been lucky... so far.

Re: Copied CD's
I know this thread is a little old now but its something i think many owners come across and are a little dissapointed with. This included myself buying 2 different brands 1 cheap one expensive and still rejecting them.
But i stumbled across something interesting. It seems the 6 CD changer Bose system has a underlying hatred for mp3 but seems to quite fond of wav format. I just burnt a cd using this new idea, worked a treat!!! Hope this trick helps someone else in future stress

Re: Copied CD's
The S1 player is only designed to play CDA (Compact Disc Audio) format - which is a very specific implementation of WAV - and is what all pre-recorded audio CDs are.
When burning music to disc for playing in the car you need to convert to CDA (most CD writing software includes this option) and you'll be limited 70 minutes per disc.
The player in the S2 (R3) plays CDA and MP3 formats but it's still limited to a subset of the MP3 options.
It's not too keen on VBR (variable bit rate) so choose CBR (Constant BR) and don't try rates above 320.

Re: Copied CD's
Mine rejects all forms of CD, and having done an awful lot of sound engineering and having some fairly decent equipment I've tried a huge variety of formats, compression rates, everything. The fact is that the stock changer is pants, and the laser dies very quickly, so I went to xcarlink and never looked back.

Same here, nothing works. Just have to choose to go for Xcarlink, auxmod, connects2 or one of the Grom units...

Re: Copied CD's
I had this problem with my old BMW.
I found that the only cd it would accept was a sony one and i burned them at 1x speed.
never had a problem after that.

Re: Copied CD's
My car's always intermittently rejected copied CDs and last week it finally tried and failed to reject one. Now whenever I turn the car on I get a bit of clunking from the CD player but nothing comes out, so I now have 6 (copied) CDs stuck in there and nothing to listen to but the radio
