Engine mount inspection
The rubber engine mounts help reduce the amount of vibration that is transmitted from a running engine to the chassis of the car. The rubber mounts are fixed onto the chassis, and a bracket is fixed to the engine. If the rubber mount fails then the engine bracket will settle onto a hard stop (by design, it won't fall out!) and you'll get a higher level of vibration/shudder that is most noticeable during idle.
The engineering diagram below shows where the mounts (1,2 and 4,5) are relative to the engine.
Access is a little awkward without a car jack and some safety stands, but it is possible to take pictures with a small digital camera. Access can be gained from underneath the car just behind the front wheels (picture below, red arrow), by placing the camera inside the body space (about 10-12cm up) and looking towards the front of the car. With some trial and error you should be able to see the engine mounts, as shown in the following posts.
Take care with the farside access as this goes right by the cat (and will be hot if you've just driven it! )
Good and bad pictures follow in the next two posts.

This picture shows the nearside mount that is still working correctly. Note that the engine mount is evenly spaced within the bracket (three red lines).

This is my farside mount and it has failed. The bracket on the engine mount has a very narrow gap at the top, and is no longer evenly spaced (red lines). Although harder to see, the rubber mount has collapsed.
This will need to be replaced and (with some good luck) will receive a good will contribution from Mazda.
Ian.

Thank you for that, ooh my dealer is going to love me when I ask about these. I'm already in dispute about the modifications to the front wheel arches with them.
Titanium Grey, bling wheels (set number 6) Now gone but will never be forgotten, sat nav, I-mob tracking, SS Strakes, full set of RB grills, K&N Filter and Borla zorst. Now lowered.
Just ask me where anything is, it will be in the boot!!

OK, having established that the offside mount on my car has collapsed - any suggestions for sourcing a pair of replacement mounts without paying extortionate stealer prices?

They're about £60 (well $116 anyway) if you order them from autopartspeople.com - and why not, if you're fitting them yourself!jca2627 wrote:Errr..............No.RotaryMC wrote:The vast majority of the cost is labour. IIRC the mounts themselves are only about £50.

I meant £60 each by the way. The cost for Mazda to replace them along with the mounting brackets is about £1100!

Thanks Of course when you go looking you won't find those red lines marked for you...
Its not clear at the moment why the brackets have to be replaced at the same time - it may have been particular to Critters situation. I'm just getting the replacement mount done.

Can I ask a daft question? How will I know if they have gone? Will I only know if I get under the car with a camera? or will the car feel different? Would I be able to get them done under warranty if the car is still under warranty?
Questions, questions.

I've got an engine idle that is very noticeable at around 750-850 rpm (more vibration through the throttle pedal). Raise the revs to about 1000-1250 and it goes away.
If you've bought the car second hand then you probably won't know what the baseline vibration is like, and I even attributed it to a few other things before it was pointed out to me while work was done on an engine coolant problem (thanks TW White & Sons!)

I'd had mine from new (well almost, 14 miles on the clock) I think Chris231 was an ex demo one. I hadn't noticed any real difference and it was only thanks again to TW Whites that it was spotted.
As for for if it can be done under warranty that's a big YES and make sure you get the modified brackets done as well as this should make then last a bit longer .
I'll try to get some pics of before and after, and the new bits when it goes in on the 24th March .

Update - the mounts have now been replaced and the difference is fantastic. There is no vibration on idle any longer!

Mine took less time and was a bit cheaper for having the car up on the ramp already. Service would be a good time to do it

my drivers side mount has collapsed and was only spotted by Rotechniks, despite being in for the oil cooler pipes the week before at a Mazda dealer. Magna Mazda are waiting for a response from Mazda technical as to whether they will pay for it - they have already paid for a headlamp sensor

Well, I'm surprised and pleased. Car goes in for BOTH engine mounts (only one has failed) to be replaced this Thursday under the Momentum Extended Warranty. When I originally asked they said they didn't think they would cover it. Essex Mazda then took it up on my behalf and called last night with the good news!

^^^^^ At last they have come good for you, about time. Was this the cause do you think of your rough running after the service they gave it.
This is even more good news for me as mine is at Bourne Road Mazda for a similar exercise, along with the oil pipes and possible sump replacement.

I think the rough running was a combination of things Ray. Deffo the engne mount wasn't helping but I also found that the air filter box wasn't seated properly and after two CELs last week and the limp mode on one of them I'm suspecting a dying CAT.
When the car's in on Thurs I'll ask them to run an emissions test and also check the diagnostic.....
Having said that, when it's behaving it still brings a smile to my face
On a separate, issue got scraped by an unidentified white van while stationary at Sadler's Farm last Fri night. Traffic was horrendous (as usual) and there was no way I could get out and after him - think he turned off toward Canvey.... Just had two quotes for the offside rear wheelarch - £743 and £927

Re: Engine mount inspection
Just had the bad news when having a service done, both mounts had it, drivers side the worst, Mazda quote £386 to supply and fit, typical rip of price, this should be a recall replacement by the number of complaints, the stores dept even admit that they now keep a stock of these because of the problem Even so i wanted them quick, so could not wait for the cheap option from the states, So i had to bite the bullet, And decided to fit myself, And saved over £100, Still paid £280 for them  ,
fitting was surprisingly quick and easy, you just need a trolly jack, axel stand, 14m socket/spanner, and wd40, drivers side although the worst, not fully collapsed,
