Wiper Replacement - Dont mess about !

Post by Rocketman » Mon Mar 27, 2006 4:00 pm

Two years down the line and my wipers have finally begun to shred.

A quick trip to the dealers reveals that a complete wiper blade is quite expensive and i struggled to get aftermarket ones which had the correct air deflector for the drivers side ( bought some and had to take them back) but these still cost about £15 a pop/each.

Then I remember replacing just the rubbers on most of my other exotica and an advert on telly pops into mind !

Off to Woolworths it is for "JBL WONDERWIPERS"

5 minutes and £7.99 later I have brand new wipers with multi facetted blades which wipe 3 times in both direction, dont squeak and as the next two days of torrential rain proved, these little wipers are indeed "Wonders". ( Just pull the old ones out of their clips, open the clips slightly with a pair of pliers, slide the new ones in and cut off the excess with some scissors(I used secateurs for a better edge).

Dont mess about with anything else or get fleeced ! Wolly's Rock ! :D

Wilkinsons do some at £2.50 per set, you buy a set in each size and end up with a spare set for the next time.

So, £5 for two sets of complete blades albeit without the aerofoil on the drivers side, so I just used the inserts which are identical to the OEM.

In fact the blades are also identical in make and construction as the OEM and are probably what Mazda fit. Not a bad mark-up then. :D

And no I'm not a cheap skate, I just object to being ripped off.
Now a distant memory unfortunately.

Rocketman, it's a while down the line now, and as you know I have just bought a second hand rx8, two years old, and the wipers were going on this too, you'll be glad to know that Woolworths still have exactly the same thing, and it still works a wonder, thanks for the tip, probably saved me a good bit of hassle

I got the Bosch ones from Autobulbsdirect and find them fine. Not as good a deal as the Woolies option, but they don't squeak and they don't streak so I'm happy. And to be honest, mail order was probably cheaper than driving there in the 8  . 2 min job to fit.

Still can't quite believe the dealers tried it on for 46 quid though.

Just take care when replacing the blades only as I did this before and broke one of the clips, this meant the blade started slipping out over time and in a torriential downpour came flying out altogether

My wipers also shredded this weekend, I popped over to woollies and have now switched to "wonder wipers". Now I'm praying for rain to test them out ( which is pretty unlikely in the current drought).

Many thanks rocketman!

I just fitted a pair of these too, druck.

However, I'm not 100% sure I've put them in correctly; they don't seem to have fully 'clicked' in, and they're offset by about 5-10mm from the originals. If I lift the arms, they can easily be slid out without using the 'release lever'. :?
Can you let me know how yours are fitted? I'll have another fiddle tomorrow, when it's light.

I just fitted the retro-fit wipers you guys have mentioned, and I found that I did not have to change the clip position; they just clicked correctly as they came from the factory.

Will post pictures soon.

Flat blades working fine here. Initially they were missing a spot right in the drivers view; but seem to have 'bedded' in now :)

£50?!

My dealer just replaced mine - I like to get the "OE" part when possible - it was £13 for one, tenner for the other, and they fitted them (no charge) when bringing the car back round from fitting my bonnet stay dampers.

I'd asked, I wasn't prepared from the reports of £50 wipers - but anyone being charged that is, I suspect, being ripped off by their dealer in more ways than "overpriced main dealer parts".

Just replaced the standard wiper inserts with the Wilkinsons blades as Ray said - but they were sold singly for £1.25 each so I just needed a 20" and an 18" and they work a treat, while I was at it I changed the daughters KA wiper blades and the wifes SportKA.

All for £7.50 - nice one Ray. \:D/
