Post by Brittishlion1 » Thu Aug 30, 2018 5:23 pm

Found a great place for the fire extinguisher, however the access door needs to go
Question?
How do I get the door off?

I've got two in mine, a small one under the passenger seat I can reach whilst in the driver's seat and a larger one in the recess of the boot.

I'd recommend anyone with a car they love to carry one, watched someones pride and joy go up in flames and it was heartbreaking.

Mine is cable tied to passenger seat adjuster! Or should say the bracket is so it can be pulled away in case it's needed

Back in the 80s I was behind a Cortina in a traffic jam when I saw smoke coming from under the bonnet.

I grabbed my extinguisher and ran to the car.

A truck driver got the woman and her kid out of the car while I shot the extinguisher through the front grill.

It took the Fire service more than 20 minutes before they could get through the traffic.

The firemen said that the Cortina had set fire to its air filter and that it was becoming a common problem; usually resulting in total loss of the car and sometimes adjacent vehicles.

I gave the woman my details in case she needed for the insurance.

The following week I got a heartfelt letter from her husband, thanking me, for saving his wife and daughter.

Later I got a cheque from their insurance company for £50 to replace my extinguisher - which I recall only cost me about a fiver in Halfrauds.

These days I still carry an extinguisher in the car, though I've not since had a need to use one, but it's good to know that you could.

I've always carried fire extinguishers in my car ever since my Mazda 323F went up on me whilst driving through the middle of St. Albans in evening rush hour. Not an experience I wish to ever repeat! I have yet to decide where to mount the thing on my RX-8 though so liking this thread very much for inspiration.

Only ever the used fire extinguisher once. Was out with my brother in his 323F when we spotted a modified Astra GSI with smoke pour out from under the bonnet heading the other direction down Cleethorpes sea front. We whipped through the next gap in the central reservation and rush to help. By time we got there the kid had the bonnet up and was dousing the flames with a small bottle of Dr Pepper he had! Not ideal for what was an electrical fire.

Turns out the lad had fitted his own subwoofer wiring kit (no fuse) and the thing had chaffed on the chassis, shorting out and insulation on the wiring loom and the build up of crud under the bonnet caught fire. With the extinguisher we beat back the flames to a point where we could pop one of the cables off the battery and that stopped it.

Kid was lucky it didn't do more damage than it did really. Pretty sure the battery was toasted and the amp wiring kit we ripped out before we left so it wouldn't fire up again. Otherwise I think he got away with mostly melted plastic.
