Huge thanks to everyone in the committee for putting this together.
Being my first track day and AGM all in one and meeting up with everyone once again, Sarah and I loved every minute of it. It's days like these make it well worth the small investment into this great clubImageImage

Great to see everyone again, and meet some of you for the first time. Glad everyone enjoyed themselves. I'm finally home, having given up on trying to stay awake on Sunday after not much sleep over the weekend. Fortunately I have good friends near to Birmingham airport so when I went to pick up my wife we just stayed over at theirs last night and avoided any micro-napping on the M1.
Photos and video to follow once I get a chance to vet the junk out of them.

I convoyed back home from Wigan with Ian.M and got home about 8pm last night, very tired! The journey back was, thankfully, a lot better than the trip up. I hope everyone else got to their next destination safely, be it home, Cadwell or some other location.

Here’s my attempt a mini -summary of the weekend:

Saturday – track. A much, much better circuit and facilities than I was expecting, enabling the handling of the 8 to be explored to its limits in a great variety of corners. The track was a little bit shorter than Brands Hatch Indy, but the layout required almost constant changes of direction – a very technical circuit. The weather, particularly for February, was very kind to us. The facilities at the circuit, plus the staff running the day for us, were great. A cosy little clubroom/bar/café, a building to store gear and even a separate briefing room! There was a nice, “club” intimacy to the place, very distinct from the corporate MSV owned tracks. OK, the paddock could do with resurfacing, but other than that, it was a fantastic day. The only disappointment was Ranjan’s car failing in such spectacular fashion :( , with me in the passenger seat and Dave (warpcOil) driving.

I jumped in with quite a few people as a passenger and took others out with me driving, which added to the fun of the day. I went out as a passenger with John (Vj4sothername) in the morning novice session and James (FrenchCarMan) in the pm novice session. I was most impressed with both of them having great lines through the corners and my input was merely to give then extra confidence and some small tweaks here and there. Well done guys, I hope to see you both at future trackdays :thumleft:

I think we only had one red flag all day, to rescue a car, undamaged, which had spun into the mud? I stand to be corrected, but I think it was Craig's car? ;). My Uniroyal Rainsports 3’s were absolutely awesome in the wet morning outings. I really can’t recommend these enough as a very reasonably priced wet track (and general road) tyre option. They really struggled on the dry track in the afternoon, with understeer everywhere, but they coped and it created much fun, with lots of tyre squeal, especially when trying (and failing dismally) to keep up with Carl Ryan driving on R888’s :D

Saturday Evening – Dinner. Well, I enjoyed my food, but is it a northern thing to pile up masses new potatoes AND (very tasty) roast potatoes on the plates then, almost as an afterthought, add a carrot, a bean and a broccoli floret as dressing  :?: ? Having said that, the chicken and sauce were well cooked, served promptly, had good flavour and were served hot, no mean feat with the number of us present at the dinner.

Huge thanks to Nigel for planning and managing the after-dinner proceedings and entertainment. Huge thanks to our traders too, RRP, Rotary Revs, AG Vinyls and Adrian Flux for their generous prize donations =D>

There were lots of well deserved thanks and recognition to those who have been with the club for many years and those who have contributed so much to making it the great club that it is. John (brix79) made an unusual expression of thanks to the RX-8 without which, he quite rightly pointed out, we would not have formed such a wonderful club.

For those people reading this who may not have been at the Dinner, Dave (warpcOil) was presented with a very elegant glass engraved trophy for his decade+ contribution as Spin Doctor. Ian Mothersole was also presented with an engraved glass “Distinguished Service Award” for his many years as Shopkeeper (let alone his help with Events, Forum Admin and other Committee work!). Both awards were richly deserved =D>

I was chuffed to receive a "Gold" 15 year Club Member vinyl sticker, plus a bottle of Prosecco and a £10 Halfords voucher in recognition of my efforts in helping Nigel and Chris with planning the Annual Meet weekend - thank you!

After dinner I understand the socialising and drinking went on well into the early hours, with some reports of people still drinking at 4.15am  With deference to my age, and the need to stay awake at the AGM, I retired around 1.15am, absolutely knackered after the early start and surprisingly physical work out on track.

Sunday – AGM. Well, that seemed to go smoothly, unlike some VERY stormy meetings of years past. Huge thanks to everyone who attended to listen to your committee members’ reports for the past year and for those who contributed to the proceedings and sharing views on the future of our club. In summary, the club is, financially, in a good place, has a very active forum and has the usual wide array of events planned for 2020 (plus a couple of new ones).

One memorable comment at the AGM proceedings (at least for me) was made by Rachel, who explained how she and her partner Leroy (Reloy), attended their first ever club meet, many years ago, and were pleased to receive a warm welcome. I’ve since met them at many events over the years and they are fantastic couple at pitching in to help out. I, too, think we are a very friendly and welcoming club with a great, lively, inclusive forum. Your committee will do all it can to maintain that situation as I think this is what brings in new members and helps us retain them.

I did manage to speak to a lot of familiar friends over the course of the weekend and managed to speak to quite a few members who were new faces to me. Apologies though as, looking through the list of attendees, I still managed to miss speaking a few new faces/names somehow

I will try and get the AGM Minutes out in the next 2-3 weeks, to allow time for drafting and sign off by all the committee members.

Finally, I hope you are all looking forward to another brilliant year with your fellow club members. If you are a member reading this and haven’t yet attended a club event, I urge you to just do it. We are a friendly and approachable bunch, honest!

I just got home about an hour ago having left the hotel at about 10.30 this morning ... so an hour less to get home than it took me to get there, but the sun was shining and the roads were much clearer. I stopped for lunch about 1pm, set off again 40 minutes later ... and my CEL came on. That was a bit worrying as I was still only as far as the M40. I pulled into the next services and dug my diagnostics thing out of the boot - and it was just the catalyst below threshold thing, so that was a huge relief. Cleared the light, carried on home.

I'd like to add my thanks to the committee and anybody else who may have been involved in organising anything to do with the weekend, =D> I had a great time and I think it was obvious everybody else did too.
Special thanks to Ian.M for passengering with me on my two sessions on track and for his help and tips etc - much appreciated. :thumleft:
It was great to see Dave and Pauline again after so long :D - and huge kudos to them for braving the ferry over from N Ireland in the face of another storm. Likewise great to see everybody else I don't see often enough. Big thanks to Leroy, Rachel, Ron and Craig for the excellent company and laughs on Sunday evening after everybody else had buggered off  :giggle: - hope you all got (get) home safely with no dramas.

Had a great weekend meeting up with everyone.

Thank you to the Committee for their hard work putting the weekend together.

I would like to thank Ranjan and the Committee for giving me the opportunity to take the broomstick onto the track. I can't profess to being very quick on track but enjoyed it very much. A great track for the RX8.

After dinner I understand the socialising and drinking went on well into the early hours, with some reports of people still drinking at 4.15am some nutjobs staying up all night, once the lightweights went to bed around 4. They are however from a place where people are made of different stuff ;)
So me and Katie (once she actually got there) had a really great time. Massive thanks to all involved in making it happen, particularly given it is weeks of hard work in the making. I was gutted I hadn't got around to getting my car fixed. After a pretty close view of it, the circuit looked really entertaining and was far better than I had expected, even after watching some Youtube vids. Really nice vibe with the people running it, who very patiently made sure I didn't come to any harm (Nige/Malcolm: if you speak to the circuit again, can you pass on my thanks to the marshals and Steve particularly).

So after a quick look last night, it seemed that I managed a reasonable hit rate, so it is going to take me a little while to work through and clean/process the keepers. Hopefully uploaded either tomorrow or Wed, but for a now here are my 3 favourite shots:

Yeah I bailed earlier than I should have, on reflection. I had caught the attention of the marshals twice by then. They were really cool and easy going about it, but I figured what they didn't need to be worrying about, was some berk with a camera, so retired.

Already done ;)

Knowing Nigel and Chris were at Cadwell today, I thought I should send an email to Lynn at the circuit on the Club's behalf earlier today. Thanks were expressed to Lynn, for her help in working with Nigel, Chris and I in planning the event over the last 3 months. I also asked her to pass on our thanks to Steve, Max, the Marshals and the friendly cafe staff who did a great lunchtime service too.

Re: 2020 Annual Meet Weekend & AGM *Feedback, Photos & Video*

Post by brix79 » Mon Mar 02, 2020 11:18 pm

Difficult to top Malcolm's summary, so I'll just add this.

After what was probably an eventful journey for everyone, on a Friday that only appeared to promise doom and gloom, the weekend went by very smoothly. Weather (mostly) included!

Great to meet so many new members, and of course see all the old friends again too. I say it every time, but I still managed to miss several people. Hopefully there'll be another opportunity. :D

I'd like to express my thanks (once again ;)) to all the members in attendance, and the volunteers who make all this possible.
These kind of weekends really demonstrate some of the best elements of being part of this Club, and genuinely helps to make it feel like all the efforts are worth it.

And I do think we should get a peek of Ian and Daves awards in their new homes. Ian was completely unaware he was getting his btw. :thumright:

Lastly, a huge thanks to Stewart and Katie for bailing me out of a bleak looking train journey, AND giving me a lift home too.
You guys are great.

I'd like to second most of the comments already made.

Keeping it short and sweet... Absolutely great weekend. The club really has some great people and thanks to this, it helped get Jess behind the wheel on track for the first time .

In John's speech he made a great point about time being precious and so it does make me grateful there are those out there who organise all this in their own time to give such enjoyment to others. I'm glad the recognition is given by way of awards and gifts and it's certainly well deserved!

The organisation of such an event, I can imagine, is no easy feat so thank you to you all for that.

Circuit was great fun, weather treated us well and I loved my passenger ride with Chris H!

Thanks again .

Nick

Re: 2020 Annual Meet Weekend & AGM *Feedback, Photos & Video*

Post by Vj4sothername » Tue Mar 03, 2020 3:59 pm

Having had some time to reflect here’s how the weekend went for me and my thoughts.

Friday:
After sitting around waiting to set off I managed to be 30 mins late to meet Alan (Ainmhidh) due to going the wrong way round Oxford then hitting the A34to M40 traffic this was further exacerbated by me coming off at the wrong junction. Alan thank you for waiting. We then spent most of our lives sat in traffic on the M6.
Upon arrival to the hotel we were greeted by a glorious site of 13 odd RX8’s and a GT86. Checked in and unfortunately found my room hadn’t been serviced but a quick chat with reception had it all sorted. Down for drinks and dinner meeting several members some new and some I’d met at Rob’s (Goodeggbob) & Mallory do last year. Stayed for a few drinks but with the track sessions in the morning I called it quits early (1am).

Saturday:
Up bright an early for track time and convoyed to park up and unload the stupid amount of tools I had with me. Next time I’ll limit my self to just 1 of the 3 socket sets and probably leave the breaker bars at home.
FORMS,FORMS,FORMS! SO many forms to collect and fill out. Quick session briefing, the team at the track seemed really relaxed and had a clear focus on us enjoying ourselves. This was my second track day and while Mallory I felt a bit rushed and crammed in, I left the Three sisters briefing feeling confident I knew what I was supposed to do. On the way out I quizzed Malcom(casey) on how brave he was feeling and asked him to join me in the novice session. While I’d done a few laps at Mallory being in members car I’d been a bit tense and dialled back through fear of the worst. After the sighting lap he jumped in and off we went! I tried to follow his instructions to the letter I swear but it was a lot happening at increasing speeds. He showed me the lines and braking zones and was really encouraging and very patient when I kept buggering the lines up and only using half the track. With my car having no documentation and almost scrapped before I snagged it trust levels weren’t the highest so I was feeling it out a fair bit and starting to understand what it was capable off (at least that’s what I’m telling myself). Half way I spotted Stewart(stewartm) taking snaps and realised I stick my tongue out when concentrating they will be interesting pictures…. Then the quiet times ended so I came in to let him out so he could attack the track.
The rest of the day was a bit of a blur. I lost track how many times I went out but I managed to use a full tank of fuel. I took Rob(goodeggbob) out for a passenger run after twisting his arm to get a band and Ollie(Yorindesarin) a few times after the unfortunate situation with the car he and Dave(warpc0il) where using. Hopefully my track etiquette was reasonable if not good. I tried to get out of the way as fast and safely as I could while Ian(Ian.Mothersole), RRP(Ryan Rotary Performance),Malcom(casey) and Patrick(Pat) blasted past me repeatedly. After lunch Carl was kind enough to lift cash from me and put the mini map on the car and helped Rob fit his new RRP coils. By the end of the session I was shattered, soar all over and really hated my self for bringing so many tools. Chucked Ollie in the car then off to quench the cars lust for hydrocarbons.

Once back at the hotel I sat in the shower trying to ache less then down for a lovely evening and was lucky enough to win the AG Vinyl collection! Unfortunately, by the time everything was done and it was time to mingle my mind and body where spent and I retreated to the room ready to for the AGM. How some of you stayed up so late I have no idea?

Sunday:
The AGM was interesting, good to see how the club is run and take part. Ian managed to lift cash out of my wallet showing his goods thankfully only to the tune of 2 jack stand pads.

Conclusion:
I had a brilliant time. While the hotel wasn’t the Ritz It did its job and they resolved my only complaint quickly. Thank you to all the committee for making this happen. Hopefully you feel the hard work paid off. It truly was fantastic and I can’t wait for next year.

The only complaint I had with anything was with myself really. As my energy levels dropped, I sunk into seeking out members I already knew for ease of socialising. My apologies to any one that felt I had been rude or cut convo’s short. I will try harder next year and meet more of you!

Additional:
After leaving the event I went to Sheffield ready for meetings on the Monday. Sat in the hotel room and went over the dashcam footage of the track sessions to find it had protected hours of the car being parked and only 3 sessions on track. To add to it I forgot to turn the water marks off and had sound muted so they are all rather poor. I’ll get them uploaded and hopefully at least some part will be useful for the YT channel or stills for SPIN.

Lessons Learnt:
1. 15 mins stints in the car with 30 to let it cool down,
2. Book Monday off work,
3. I will give up before the car does,
4. Take the opportunity to meet new people regardless if I feel like I’d gone half a round with a grizzly bear.
5. Set up recording equipment the night before.

"Why are my discs blue?" John 29/2/2020. Ahah. I'd also suggest doing cooling laps as well as the rest time! Bit harder to do on a small track though.
