The end of an era (MX-5 30AE)

Post by CheekyWankel » Sun Aug 04, 2019 8:10 pm

Hello everyone
I'm here with some sad and happy news.
I don't have any pictures to show yet as I have to wait until September for a very special someone.
But today I put a deposit down on a 30th anniversary edition MX-5, I couldn't be happier about that.
-
But getting this has to mean making space, and by making space BOTH of my beloved RX-8's have to go, I'm heart broken but this will be much better for me in the long run.
No more will I have to worry about the engine conking out mid drive, the rust creeping up on me or something totally unexpected and expensive.
Now, I'm gonna stick around because I love you guys and the RX-8 is still one of my favourite cars, I'll be like Nigel V2 toting a non-rotary car but still around for the fun.
-
As soon as I have her I'll be updating with pictures and a review of the drive. I can't wait to show off that orange paint!
-
A huge thank you to everyone who has made these three years amazing, it's not just about the car's but also the wonderful friendships I have formed. No doubt I will return to the RX-8 so keep some clean for me!
-
Finally!
Here she is... Her name is Katsumi. sorry about the delay in getting pictures up! These are from her first outing, the Viaduct at Chappel

RX and Katsumi together, I really miss him...

when old meets new. They're both so lovely!(My NA is named Luna)
-
My Thoughts...
Driving
The ND drives very much like the NA, handles extremely well and grips the road just like an RX-8. The ride obviously isn't the smoothest being so close to the ground but the suspension hides a fair about of lumps and the occasional pot hole that jumps out at you last second. Mazda were kind enough to give me a full tank of petrol. I've only gone around 90 miles in her so far (weekend car) but it's only started to drop of the FULL bar.
with a 2.0L skyactive engine coughing up 180bhp the car holds it's own off the mark. It also sounds aggressive but not obnoxious, if I had neighbours they wouldn't be complaining.
Styling
Let's talk about that orange paint, because it's that and a few extra touches that brings this ND up by £8,000...
It's striking and even though the car is low you can't miss or lose her in a car park! The Orange colour comes from the fact the first anniversary edition NA was Yellow and the 25th anniversary Edition NC was Red, a nice touch on Mazda's behalf. The orange theme continues inside with Orange stitching, Piping on the Recaro seats (I now understand why R3 owners are proud of their seats, they're lush!) and other smaller trim pieces like the vent surrounds. Going back out the car you also get a badge with your cars production number, mine being 1423/3000. You also get 17" Rays forged aluminium wheels that boast 30th anniversary engraved into them, Mazda want you to know that this isn't any old MX5. Oh yeah, and that orange theme carries onto the Brembo brake calipers too!
Build Quality
The car is solid, even when driving with the roof down the car holds well and doesn't shake at high speeds like the NA does. The panel gaps are all even and everything works as it should! The roof mechanism is so simple, I couldn't believe how easy it is to operate... no more unzipping the rear window and getting in and out of the car (the NA is a chore if you didn't already know!) My only complaint so far is that there's a few plastic trims that move slightly. One being next to the passenger seat that hold the carpet down, pushes in which is okay if, guess what, you don't push it. There's also some plastic by the wipers that push down. Not really an issue but I expected them to be stuck down better.
Overall
For what you pay for the car (£28,095 for the soft top) you get a lot of kit in terms of performance and extras compared to the normal ND. Is it worth it? Yes, to me at least, to have one of 3000 is a truly special feeling. She's a real head turner, that with the gorgeous MX5 design and striking paint, will be turning heads for years to come. Although I've lost the spirit of the RX-8 and that amazing engine, the ND still feels inviting and ready for fun.

Ah yes that little pink plastic card, the bane of my existence.

Thank you, I'll get there, with a brand new car in tow I've gotten my motivation back for driving!

That's exactly how I felt when I bought my Abarth and realised I have to let my RX-8 go. And that's why I'm still here despite having said goodbye to my Rex, it's a nice club to be in.
I guess it's going to be three of us running around with pistons soon. :D

It's gonna feel weird for a while. I certainly will miss the quirks of the rotary and it cute start up sound.

I just hope that people at the Essex meet don't think it's my mum's like they do my Eunos 😅😅

I remember getting my first new car.

It will be a lovely moment when you hear that sound of fresh alloy meeting kerb . Oh the joys of the first stone chip and car park dent.

Luckily my first car at 17 was not new so I got all the nocks and bangs out the way before getting something decent.

Have fun in mx5 what a cool car.

Oh god I'm literally dreading getting anything on the paint or wheels (the wheels are engraved too!). I totally get why some members go crazy about not parking near anyone or going to shows.

I will bite the bullet however and take her to meets and a local show near me that's ran monthly.

Not yet... I'm driving my NA for the time being due to funds but then I'll be back to professional lessons, should only need a few to prep before the test...

And I know I'm super excited. I keep thinking about it and getting all giddy!!

And yes Shroom, it will be a relief to have a car without issues, but I've come to like RX's quirks, fading paint and rust. Things like that give the car personality I find.

Yes very true although doesn't personality soon get boring when your spending $$$$ constantly and spending your weekends finding out you need yet another tool to do the job or that's snapped so now what.

What's your new name going to be now though as yours was very specific with Cheeky Wankel it's going to be harder moving to a regular 4 pot that everyone else has Image Wankel is a very unique name one that I do like but find hard to explain to non rotary or car interested folk for that matter.

Well that's RX gone, still in the club with Adam (Punchy)
Rex is going in a few weeks and will become a dolled up show car.

Roll on the 22nd when I get the orange lass! Will be bringing her to the Essex meet the following week :D

I will remain CheekyWankel, Shroom, that car will always be a part of me, Adam has even said it will still feel like he's my car :)
