Not just RX-8s that break springs...

Post by warpc0il » Mon Jul 29, 2019 4:05 pm

Mum has a 2009 1.4 Fiesta that's just broken its third suspension spring in the last two years.

The car only has 18.7k on the clock, so that's 1,800 miles/year.
It's driven by an 83 yo lady, very gently, never bumped up kerbs, never raced or rallied.
Very rarely with more than two people in the car, or more than a couple of bags of shopping in the boot.

I would normally replace road springs in pairs but with so little mileage and such a lightweight shopping trolley, it didn't seem worth the bother.

It is currently living within 200 yards of the sea (for the last four years) and has never been garaged.
When it is driven it's on Northern Irish roads, again for the last four years.

The NI Department for Infrastructure seems to think that the best way of reducing the number of potholes is to let them grow until they all join together..

"Look, there were 20 potholes in this road and now there's only four" (huge ones) [-X

Perhaps that's part of the UK's proposed new trade deals after Brexit. Tunnel our way to China via pot holes.

My brother's Focus has broken 2 front spring sets in 5 years.
I actually think the RX8 lasts really well considering how badly they must get punished on average.

I think most Ford's of that age suffer from the issue.
I've changed many a Mondeo springs and a few fiestas.
I've never feared for my life so much when changing a Mondeo spring, bloody terrifying when the spring compressor slips
