The other...motorbike

Post by PeteH » Thu Sep 20, 2018 7:45 pm

Well we've had "The other car", "The other Mazda" and "The other bike", and loads of us have motorbikes. So here's the 'garage' to park them in.

To kick things off, I test rode this "mini-Tesla' the other day. It's a Zero SR electric bike. I was fully expecting to dislike it, but it was phenomenal. Up to 80mph it's as fast as a full on superbike, and you just twist the "throttle" to make it happen. It's supposed to do up to 150 miles on a charge, which is more than my Ducati can do on a full tank. Two unexpected things were really weird. Firstly, there is no heat source near your knees, so on hot days you don't get hot (and presumably on cold days you don't get warm...). And rolling up to junctions without any sign that you have an engine is really disconcerting; hoping that when you open the throttle it will actually go :!:

Here is a picture of my 1986 xt 600 tenere I restored it to winters ago so I did not sit in and watch strictly come dancing.
I have only done 5 km on it .

My biking days are a long way behind me,but my last steed,in the mid 80's,was a 1982 Z1000R Eddie Lawson replica, looking very much like this - same as Ian,I have no pics of my actual bike - only mine had a Metmachex box section swinging arm and multi spoke wheels, and that all-important - and loud! - Kerker exhaust..oh..and no mirrors, obviously ;)

Nice bike Chris, would you ever be tempted to get another one? I've thought about it but it would mean having to sit my licence test again and it's much harder these days what with all the theory ect ect.

None of that really when I did mine many many moons ago.I'm not that well up on the regs these days over here but I've heard that you HAVE to get lessons and you can't drive anything bigger than a 125 while you are a novice driver

ive owned a few over the years

first bike,(bar 50ccs and 125ccs) GPZ250.... someone had taken the airbox off and fitted pod filters.. so it was always pig lean at the bottom half of the rev range. never fixed it....

second was a bandit 600. got bored of it quickly and fitted a GSXR750 engine in. not going to put finished pics on tho, was rather shall we say, garish. what can i say, i was 18.....

bike after that was my all time second favourite bike. Yamaha R1 (the original 1999 version, known as the widowmaker  )

i wrote that one off. not my fault :? put me in hospital for a while and will always have some impressive scars! didnt claim on the insurance so my next bikes where cheap.

after that it was a bandit 1200. got me about until i got wanting a sportsbike again when i bought.....

a FZR600R Foxeye. this was a race homogenisation production run, so only ran for about 18months. rare as hens teeth as most of them where crashed....

thats the bike i learned to paint on. not a bad job, considering what i started with...

(yes that is outside the dealer i bought it from)

after that my budget had increased somewhat so i got my all time favourite bike (and my last sportsbike)
my yamaha R6. god that was a good bike. wish i never sold it.

i went on a euro tour one year so i wanted some comfort. so for the first time ever i bought a second bike to go along side it.

a BMW R1100S

a good enough bike but never clicked with it. however at this time of my life i was less interested in out and out performance and riding bikes less and less. the year after i bought (and sold) the bmw i did a total of 60 miles on the r6. year after that it didnt go out at all.

in a effort to rekindle my love, i tried for something a bit more comfortable that i could go touring on, the plan was to go back to europe and follow the old Grand Tour route (still in the bucket list i might add) so i bought my Triumph Sprint ST1050....

which i never took out of the south west.

i sold that bike to help pay my mortgage deposit.... and that as they say, is history!

Quakers, nice selection of bikes there,im thinking of getring an r1 early model round 2002,curious as you have owned both,r1/r6,
How noticeable is the power difference between the both?

very, but my r1 was about 40whp up on standard. so standard bikes less so. having said that, its not so much the outright power that is noticiable, as the power deliverty. think of it as a rx8 vs a v8 with the same peak hp. one loves to rev, the other will tear your arms out from idle.

i loved the r1 but it refused to keep its front wheel on the floor.

a previous owner had fitted 1000s worth of carbon ram air intake and had a lot of head and cam work, it was mental!

another thing to note is the mk2 (2001 on) was a lot more tame and the geometry was a lot less agressive than the mk1, so theres that...

i miss the r1 because it was mental. i giggled every time i went anywhere near the throttle. i miss the r6 more because it was a better chassis and a far better road bike. it was very nearly as quick but needed riding a lot more , you coudnt just leave it in 6th amd wind on (on the r1 it was 6th gear, 30mph wind it on and a couple of seconds later once it had wound up it was trying the wheelie!)

Ive got some photos at home somewhere...
Ive hung up my leathers as lost a few friends and my best riding mate smashed himself up..
Yzr600 thundercat. 99T
Cbr600f 97R
Cbr900rr Fireblade my fav.
Kawasaki zx6r p8f smashed this up with 800 miles on clock. Highsided it.
Gsxr 1000rr. Aniversary black n gold 04 Crescent remap mental bike after crash too much for me lost my confidence.
Gsxr600 srad 97..blue n white like everybody else...got my confidence back on this bike.
Until a little ol lady pulled straight out in front of me and stopped dead in my lane. I knew i wasnt going to stop..so gunned it head on into Quarry lorry coming the other way...made it went straight home and sold it..
Year later 1982 z1000 custom air cooled...slow and i lost all confidence in other road users as seemed everytime i took it out somebody wanted to knock me off so sold it.
Miss my Blade best bike allrounder. Thankgod i never got into bike trackdays...

Nice bike Chris, would you ever be tempted to get another one?..
It crosses my mind every time summer comes around,Ian,

If I did it would have to be something very similar to my old Z1000R..an old-school sport bike. Got chatting to a guy who had a beautiful Z1000R done in white instead of green,at my local Classic car & bike show last year, and he wouldn't even consider a modern sports bike - the older bike just drew so much more attention 8)

He did also point out that a modern 600cc sport bike would eat the Z for lunch, both in a straight line and in the corners, but hey..we're talking about a 35 year old bike, and at my age I'd hardly be tipping it into corners like I was Guy Martin

Since this thread evoked fond memories of my old Eddie Lawson Replica,I did a quick Google on the man himself - now 60 years of age,he's still into his bikes, although obviously his racing days are way behind him,and he was recently invited to the unveiling of Kawasaki's Z900RS Cafe..a new sport bike, with it's roots firmly based in that old school machine of the 80's.. and I do like it 8)

Iv'e got lots of bikes though none of them work, they all complete in addition to me collecting NOS parts as I go ....
2 Mk1 Bandit 600s (1 street fighter and 1 Std) Both need a little finishing then ready to sell them on to make room to start a project...
2 1982 Suzuki GS1100G's
1 1982 Suzuki GS1100GL (custom style version of the G which is the less popular shaft drive)
1 1978 Yamaha XS750 triple
1 1978 Honda XL250S
1 1987 Suzuki GN 250N commuter type bike that lends itself to making a good flat tracker style
