rover fuel pump help

Post by Dazza44 » Sat Jun 23, 2018 10:57 am

hi all
trying to fix a rover 75 for farther in law,the fuel pump isnt perging hence no fuel getting into engine, ive checked fuses/relays all good,so i decided to connect a live/and earth to battery and pump connecter and bingo all working and car starting
my question is
if i run that live/earth feed to an alternative live prefferable one that is only live with ignition on,was thinking the in car heater unit, so therefore the fuel pump will only work with car on and will switch of when turn car of
would this be safe i assume it would be, but would appreciate anyone elses views
many thanks
darren

hi Daz ,the issue you would have is that god forbid an accident occured, the pump would keep running if no one could turn off ignition.is there a way you could run live to something that is cut when engine stops, not ideal as engines can keep running even after a collision, but safer than heater unit.good luck ,rob.

hi daz ,it would have to be something like the dizzy or alternator.i am no expert but maybe airbag supply?have you tried a new wire from live side of fuse or relay just to see where problem is.that would be much better if that worked without compromising safety.rob.

It could be the crash switch that has cut power to the fuel pump.

The switch is often mounted somewhere in the front footwell and can get triggered by a random thump.

Most have a reset button.

It might be hidden behind a trim panel, hopefully with an access flap

The switch looks like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-ZS-ZR-ZT- ... 1438.l2649
and is located behind the glove box, according to Google.
http://bfy.tw/Ijrd

Apparently the switch might need to be reset or there could just be a loose connection, which isn't uncommon

Many of us on here speak "Dazza", having practised on the early forms of "Aston", which was even more challenging ;)

hi daz, sounds like an intermittent fault with pump.do you have current going to it every time you try to start thru the original wiring.if yes it must be the pump itself.daft idea but try tapping pump with something ,you never know ,rob.

Connect a bulb temporarily across the pump connections so you can if/when there is and isn't power

Yep, so you have an "at a glance" indication.

Just make sure that the bulb's not going to burn/melt anything.
