100,000 mile discs on my Beemer

Post by ChrisHolmes » Sun Jan 07, 2018 4:23 pm

When I bought the car back in March I notice the discs had quite heavy rust on the rims and centres and the bite was not good.
After a couple of weeks and a few deliberately hard breaking sessions the bite improved and all seemed OK. Then in the mornings recently with the first brake application there was a scrunching sound so I reckoned I had worn the pads out. Fortunately ECP had a promo on and I picked up F&R discs and pads for £93!!!!!

I was surprised by what I found when I pulled the pads out, they were only worn by about a mm but the discs were another story altogether as the photos show. The rear handbrake drum surface was totally rusted and the disc itself had a 2mm lip and heavy rust considerable scoring.
The front discs were a real pain to get over the hub due to the internal having swollen so much with heavy rust. lump hammer and disc dinged to hell and back saw them removed!
I will now let the photos speak for themselves.

Have you measured the thickness of the swept area?

Wear can seem excessive as the unswept area grows rust.

You'll either need a micrometer to measure the thickness, bridging over the rust, or take off the rust with an angle grinder.

I did think about the skimming option but with the handbrake drums to skim as well the price of doing this perversely would have been more than the cost of the new discs!!

Having now been out to bed in the pads the difference is night and day.

I had a similar experience with the discs and pads on the Jag when I did those recently, after about 45000 miles the discs were over the limit and the pads were very close to it. What bothered me more than anything was the uneven nature of the wear - on the front right for example, the outer pad was basically new, but the inner was worn down to the metal. Turns out the calipers hadn't been maintained properly when the brakes were last serviced, so I gave them a good going over. Now I've got Mintex M1144 all round (cost a pretty penny, but worth the lot) and the brakes actually work properly again, it's amazing.
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

So today there was a heavy clunk from the rear of the car and then a terrible screeching clicking sound. Cue breakdown service for only the second time in 40 odd years of driving, strangely my last time was also in a BMW when the head gasket blew!
The culprit is the handbrake shoe retaining pin, or rather the hole it goes through in the back plate which apparently can corrode badly and just pulls out allowing the show to move to an angle and the pin and spring then bounce round in the drum and spot the loose shoe gap and bang!
So, fitting new back plates involves removing the rear hubs which involves new hub bearings and can be a real bar steward due to corrosion after 11 years. total with labour is likely to be c£400.
Then I get a call from the garage and the back exhaust box mounting brackets are cracked through and the box is wafer thin so needs replacing, genuine BMW only at £318 plus clamps etc; so I am looking at a total bill of around £800!
not a happy bunny!

They can be bodged ... I've done it more than once.

It'll stop you from doing any more handbrake turns, but it'll hold the car and pass an MOT. :)

I had the same issue with my beamer couple years ago right pita I bodged it, as wasn't prepared to spend to much money on the car, it passed the mot, then.i slackened it from. Inside the car and didn't bother using the handbrake anymore.
