Re: Honda Accord Type R
Have the headlights a quick bit of love today as they are quite oxidised and rather crazed. Only had 1200grit and upwards, so a little annoying as I thought i had 600 to give them a real fresh skin.
They came up good until I put the clear coat rattle can for some UV protection on them and they seemed to react to them. So probably going to have to give them another go. Fortunately it’s a pretty easy task and next time I’ll get the headlights off the car and do them in the bench to save masking off the car, which is a it boring.

Re: Honda Accord Type R
Picked up the painted spoiler from down the road and couldn't believe our eyes as we rolled up, but as we drove in there was a nighthawk black ATR sat there!!! Someone else on the farm has one apparently! What at the chances?!
Spoiler on ours now and it makes it look sooooo much better. Who would take the spoiler off as a factory option?! Also took a Dremel to the inner peashooters on the exhaust and straightened up the right side. Looks a little better now too.
The ATR spoiler actually lands and sits pretty much perfect on the RX8 tailgate...! I reckon it would look pretty good if you committed to it...!

Re: Honda Accord Type R
So last weekend we finally made it to the Nurburgring..! The RX8 sadly couldn't make it, I didn't have enough time to sort out all of the bits whilst dealing with the insurance company. So it was just Ben and me in the ATR, Ross in the BRZ, Jay in a Lotus Evora and David in SLK350. Ross knows the track very well and despite being in a stock BRZ, was putting in some impressive laps. Oh to have a sim rig at home....
What an amazing place, it is petrolhead heaven. Even after replacing one calliper with a new recon because of a sticky piston, after 5mins on the first run we had more issues with the brakes. Terrible judder under hard braking meant that we could only do a few laps over the 2 days and was having to mostly lift and coast as much as we could. Still had a great time and can't wait to go back.

Re: Honda Accord Type R
How's this for a revival of a thread?! Two and a half years later....
So, it sat for quite a long time after the trip to the ring knowing that we had to look at the brakes... Maybe a year passed and we finally had a day or so to look at them. Hopped in to fire it up and drive it into the workshop and the brake pedal went to the floor with a lot of air...! A few pumps later and the air had stopped and fluid had begun from underneath. Unclipping the underbody line brackets to inspect, the brake fluid was promptly joined by the unmistakable taste of 99octane and we were looking at a lot of rusted and corroded lines....
So we walked away for quite a long time again, very disheartened, as we didnt have the time to get into that sort of project right then. Fast forward to around a few weeks ago, and we've finally pulled our fingers out and sorted the lines. I say we.....
The brakes still need doing and I'm trying to make it my mission to do it in the next two weeks and book it on a day at Brands on the 14th. ( I would have tried for Silverstone but I'm working all weekend.)
There seems to be no middle ground with brake disc options for the ATR, either very cheap or extremely expensive. I'm thinking I might go Zimmermann discs and then some PBS ProRace pads.
Wish me luck, I'll hopefully update with good news.

Re: Honda Accord Type R
Fortunately not the rack, unfortunately not the pump. It’s the send line between (the one with the switch in!).
And it’s a type r only part. Can’t find anywhere that stocks a replacement, had a breaker already say they haven’t got it (I imagine they can’t be bothered). Maybe another breaker will come through but I don’t have high hopes. It’s looking like a custom job but it’s going to be expensive, particularly as it’s the line that includes the switch. Maybe I can look to get just the corroded part removed but it’s right rear the end with a lot of turns in the pipe!
Brands Hatch looking unlikely for the 14th now…

Re: Honda Accord Type R
If you can get the pipe off the car and to a fabrication firm they could cut out the corroded section and weld in a new section, power steering only runs at about 10 bar so this should give a robust repair

Re: Honda Accord Type R
Wouldn't even need to weld. You can add a section via permaswage kit etc.

Re: Honda Accord Type R
Permaswage is good enough for aircraft, both manufacturing and repair.

Re: Honda Accord Type R
It's what I've used it on. Hydraulic lines. Permanent repair and quick and easy for anyone with a kit. Takes minutes. Pending access can do it in situ aswell. Very surprised more garages don't have for brake line replacement etc.

Re: Honda Accord Type R
So it was a bit of a saga!!
The power steering line was an absolute pig to get out! The access is really tight, even after removing everything above it. The subframes get right in the way for where you need to swing a spanner. The return line had to come off too at the rack for access and fortunately was actually able to loosen and remove it with plenty of patience. But the feed line was too stuck in the rack to release with just an open spanner (even a flange nut wrench). So I had to buzz it off and get a 6sided socket on the end to get it out. Then the next challenge of actually threading a very peculiar shaped pipe out of the engine bay, it was an absolute nightmare. I didn't want to chop it or bend it, incase we had to get a custom one fabricated and needed it for reference.
We managed to get a decent condition one from somebody breaking one from the ATR Facebook group that luckily my friend had access to (as im not a Facebook user!), got it off his car and sent it us for £30, which we were chuffed with! Getting it back in was as tricky as removing the old one, as well as blindly having to bolt back in brackets and clips. The stock power steering cooler was a perished embarrassment too, so used the opportunity of an empty system to change that out for an Ebay special.
That whole area of the engine bay is the problem area for water ingress and therefore rust, and with more investigation the clutch line and the front right brake line was weeping from heavily corroded sections of the pipes. The clutch line was easy to sort, just a 1m line from anyone (in +hp Red). But the brake line was un-repairable. The location and the route meant it wasn't feasible to chop and replace a section. So with the help of a mechanic behind my unit, we made up a whole new line from the ABS pump to the wheel. It isn't pretty, but it worked.
Went for PBS ProRace pads and the Zimmermans that I ordered from Germany turned up disguised as a ripped open cardboard box. So instead had to panic order some grooved Mtechs. Got the new calipers on too...
But we bloody made it to Brands on the 24th!!
Was soooo nervous about something new leaking under stress (even though we had looked and checked everything we could). Ironically, a TT emptied its power steering fluid around the whole loop on the sighting lap. The brakes were great, the tyres were ok. Was a joy to drive and even though I said to myself that I would take it easy and just use the day to gently break her back in, after a stint I was ringing her neck to the car and drivers limits (albeit, that not being very high in either of their current guise). It was great.
HOWEVER, just before lunch the flexi section on the exhaust fatigued to the point of ripping off at the collar, and after lunch we got black flagged for noise limits. So that was the end of the day... we thought about a bodge to keep us on track but decided that we had perhaps pushed our luck far enough for the ATRs first real outing.
So currently, I'm thinking about attempting to weld in a universal flexi section to get us back running. There are a couple of downpipes on Ebay but they look a bit rough and are over £100! So I'll see if I can tack on a new bit before spending the cash on one of those.
Then I think it's just a fluid change and booking another day?! Should be seeing the OC soon....
