New 2025 MG HS Trophy DCT - Family wagon duties

Post by DrewR3 »

As per the title, taken a little leap of faith with the all New MG HS.

We did quite alot of research prior to taking the jump on it, various good reviews online, spoke in depth at the dealer with this being an entirely new platform, not a facelift, every single thing is completely new developed. From the engine, DCT gearbox, even the brakes and suspension.

The last HS was the 7th best selling car In the UK in 2024, the new one was release about October 24. As above, a clear and very different car. So, MG hasn't had the best reputation for reliability, as we all likely know they are an old name bought out by Chinese company SAIC. Who actually do alot of the car development in the UK and then manufacture components in China to be assembled here on some models, or built and shipped in from China on others.

So, with the above. I thought I would catalogue the journey of how it handles family life, real world living with it and was the leap of faith worth it.

Firstly, the buying. I have a Blue light card which allows for a decent discount. Having visited many dealers, MG appear to be one of the few actually supporting blue light workers anymore. It used to be quite a big thing on cars, not so much though anymore it appears. I'll be honest, this swayed me maybe more than it should that actually a company that still has some principles to offer things like this, then actually I want to take a chance on them aswell. The dealers were very down to earth, all very easy and the final OTR price after all discounts etc was 26k on the nose for the top spec Trophy with Metallic paint and DCT auto. I believe this was about 29495 without discounts. With a bit of money down from the old merc sale and change down back of sofa, put a brand new car on the drive with 7 year warranty, 7 year AA break down cover (if you maintain service history), no need to MOT,and first year service and tax for £297 per month.

Secondly, taking delivery. So this appeared to go smoothly and it did. Car was very good, dealer were very good, the Valeter average but I do have OCD. However, there was a few bits that were just lacking that attention to detail, not getting the microfiber right into corner of windows and with it being gloss black wheels, would of been nice to get right into the inner part of the wheels aswell as outside. Overall, an average clean and valet. Though, I wasn't to concerned as I wanted to ceramic coat it myself and prep certain parts. As you can see in the picture above after 10 miles, it's hardly unclean so perhaps I'm being to harsh on the valet team. At the end of the day the were not handing over a Rolls Royce. Other than that, all good and happy......or so we thought.

Luckily, I was ceramic coating the car myself, and during prep I thought I had found an area of Polish that was missed being wiped off I'm the credit of rear door. This was not the case. Appears potentially those pesky valeters or someone at the garage may well have opened the door into something and taken the paint off. Not sure why anyone other than the valet team or PDI tech would be opening the rear door on a new car, but unfortunately I found this:

A quick call to the dealer, and a few photos (plus some advice from our resident Ford dealer in madame sec) and within a few hours the Dealers were more than happy something had gone wrong their end and a whole new door is inbound to swap over. Can't fault the aftersales within 3hrs, the manager had signed off on it and now just awaiting the door. These things happen, I'm sure not the first car to be dinged in transport or at the dealership. However, confidence boosting that the dealer and company were quick, hassle free and willing to sort instantly.

Naturally, we wanted to get some miles on it, so first drives out and about, setting up everything and getting used to some of the nice little features lead me to an overall very impressed. 65 miles done today, smooth, quiet refined and handled twisty roads fine given its very large size. Some of the reviews questioned its vague steering feel, may I suggest they swap the steering from comfort or normal into sport? I certainly could not fault the handling or feel for a large car on some nice North Wales mountain roads. Engine and box pick up well. Only downside today within those mountains we only got 35 mpg. Cruising at 70 earlier in the day on the motorway however we were in the mid 40s at about 46 mpg. Tight new engine though, perhaps this will become more frugal later on, however we were more than happy with around the 40mpg average hoped for our usual routes and daily commute.

They do indeed. And the Explorer was my first choice (As Christine knows as she put the deal together, and it wasn't far off the MG but a lease deal, instead of PCP we have and will eventually own the MG), unfortunately though, the Mrs wasn't ready to embrace the full electric life just yet. When we come to change this in 4 years time, then perhaps by choice or force of Gov, we will indeed be embarking on electric and a ford.

The companies that offered blue light were:

Ford
MG
Renault
Skoda
Maserati
Alfa Romeo
Hyundai
Kia

In fairness to Mercedes, they do not but offered an alternative discount of 3k via other means. Though this was a dealer understanding, not the company.

It will be very interesting to see if the new door is the same shade when it's fitted, and still a matching shade in a couple of years time.

The Titanium Grey JDM auto that sits in our carpark has a bootlid that's never been resprayed but is clearly a different shade to the rest of the car. It doesn't even have any cracked paint on the hinge bolts that would suggest it cam from another car :?
The pre-painted US-spec hoop spoiler, that's now waiting to be fitted, is a perfect match to the rest of the car, just not the lid.

My hope is that they are taking it off another that arrived at the same time and in theory was built and painted at the same time in the factory.

Update on the door, went in at 0930 this morning, donor car was already in the workshop awaiting. Gave me the keys to a demo to go off and do some errands, and by 1230 the swap was done and shiny new door with all the paint on it now attached. Panel gaps are spot on and colour match I can't tell a difference, my friend who is a painter has had a look and all is well in the world of MG. Pretty spot on service that, within 48 hrs, new door on and sorted.

In other news, cars just turned 100 miles. Driving nice, quiet, smooth and comfy. Many friends and family now seen, all impressed with the quality given the budget price tag. The fuel is very accurately the same as what was said in the leaflets. Combined cycle 39mpg which isn't amazing and the 70mpg from the PHEV may of given a more warm and fuzzy feeling on the readout, however, I have done the maths amd because we only do 6-7k miles a year, the 80 extra to save the 40 a month in fuel wasn't logical.....so I will just have to keep reminding myself of that fact as I look at Type R or RX8 figurs on the instant reading.....

End of the first week with the MG HS. All going well. Impressing more and more every day as we get used to it. Unbelievably quiet, smooth and easy place to be. I could see it eating miles on long drives. Yet to give it a big road trip, but it's easily surpassed family and commuting duties this week.

I am also going to have to give ALA gap insurance a big shout out. I've been with them for years on our cars, new and used. Because the MG is brand new, the plate is yet to come up on systems. So I had to manually type in the details. Which I had done correctly, I also used my 10% discount code from the expiry of my Merc about 2 years ago and it still worked. After taking it for replacement vehicle cover at £305 for 4 years to cover from insurance payout to buying a brand new version of this car including inflation or not getting the discounts etc I had this time. I.e if I was not able to get my 3.5k discount and free metallic paint, it doesn't matter they will fund the difference. So the reason for a shout out, about 30 min after buying the policy online, the phone started ringing with ALA on display, next minute a very nice lady said she had just reviewed the policy for me and had noticed that I had left Mr instead of changing to Mrs as the policy has to be in the keepers name, I had initially filled in my details. But best of all, she said the system automatically thought it was a PHEV and she can see it is not so they are refunding me £38 as they quoted to much......I mean no one would ever of known, they didn't need to do that. I was happy with qoute, had bought and the car listed was my car. Sure enough, that day the money was back in account and updated docs emailed. 5 stars ALA. It's refreshing change.

2 weeks in and 250 miles, so far all good. Got used to some of the bits now. Very impressed with all tech and general layout. The drive is silent and comfortable. Fuel isn't doing bad, still half of the full tank we put in for 60 quid, so looks like realistic 450 mile range of our short journey driving. It's first big run out for a 2.5hr round-trip to my parent is scheduled for tomorrow. See what mpg we get on a run. All good so far, first proper wash after 2 weeks of family duties:
