Looking for a heads up on this

Post by Aido 8 » Tue Nov 05, 2019 9:59 pm

Hi guys I just bought a new battery for a car and just realised the battery height is shorter than the original.

So my question is would it be ok to stick a few flat tiles or something to raise the battery up so i can screw the clamps down to secure the battery :)

Will be fine as long as don’t block off any of the air vent/drainage holes in the bottom of the tray. (Can’t remember exactly what is there?)

If the battery is small, is it really up to the job?

Too small capacity is asking for problems down the line.

Yeah crossed my mind but it came from a well recommended Auto factor so just never thought to say anything  . Would you believe we have had the car (Mitsubishi) from new and the original battery had been in it for 11 and a half years.

If the car is that old then it's possible that the replacement battery is a high enough capacity, since even lead-acid battery technology has been developed and you can now get more capacity in a smaller package, especially for popular options.

I found it strange that the original fit batteries always last twice as long as replacements.

When I was at Ford I had a chat with the production purchasing team and asked them if there was anything special about the batteries they ordered for the line. They recognised the pattern, from their own experience, and only thing that they or their suppliers could come up with was that the batteries were fresh of the suppliers line and straight into the cars, rather than sitting in the supply chain and the wholesaler, retailer warehouses.

If it's too small, will the clamp still fit?

I just use a piece of polystyrene from some packaging under the battery which is really easy to work with.
I have a dry cell race battery which is only half the size and 5 cars and I can use it on any really easy with this method.
