Don't you just want to stick to your RX-8 as your track car?

If you drive within your limits you shouldn't really crash it but if you want the mx5 then check for rust as you've said already. If it's a mk1 then check what the mileage is and know that it may have also been tracked which can mean an owner has looked after the car... Or not. Check oil leaks and I think transmission issues can be common. There's a couple of buyers checklists on Google for mk1 purchasing. The mx5 forum may also be a good place to check? Good luck

Pretty bullet proof..
Cam angle sensor on back of engine..stick hand over back oil leak...£5 for o ring.
Coil pack, ignition left on can burn out...and when hot can break down cheap to replace.
Roll bar...if going on track worth investing in
1.
Rust rust rust...like an 8 but older undoing any suspension bolts 50% of time involves a grinder.
All other basic car checks.
Parts are plentiful and lots of parts from mk and mk2.5 swap upgrade.
Heres mine this wont be going on track.Image

Bit of cam tick on start up common should clear as oil warms but a flush and fresh oil should sort.
1st n 2nd can be stiff when cold again sorts itself when oil warms up.
I wouldnt worry about engine its gonna be the chassis you need to check.
Non interference engine so no real need to worry about cam belt change other than the annoyance of it snapping and stranding you.

Vinyl or mohair.
Vinyl csn split and get tears on edge...rear plsstic window will crack and split if not shown respect by unzipping to drop roof.
Some vinyl roofs have solid glass heated screens far better.
Mohair very nice but need cleaning else go green.
So many being broken that if its roof is shot good bargaining point and roof are easy to swap on the frame...i sold a mint roof last week on frame for £220 2 hours on off easy peasy.
Drain channels need regular clearing..you tube guide best...
Drive forward n back low speed...if there block youll hear the water in the cills rushing back n forth....proceed with caution...will be rotting from inside out.
Mk1 dont suffer front chassis rail rust like 2 and 2.5s but ive patch mine so worth a check.
Cracking cars ive had 37...lol

Its not a biggy the roof just not nice if caught in rain and cold water dribbles down your back...
Its mainly rust dont wanna big fail mot time if you cant weld...check the mot history online...last mots advisorys will tell the picture if its swiss cheese underneath.
Really respond well to a set of coilovers all pretty softly sprung from factory.

Just thought of few others things...L reg should be a eunos then...jdm import should have a Torsen lsd...and window regs can be painfully slow...new 1s are about £90.00.
There was a uk 1.6 that was 90bhp no pas...poverty spec...best avoided really slow.
Drivers door there is a vin sticker shows the spec.
Oh and tyres 26psi...32psi ruins handling.

Red roadster badge and eunos emblem on bonnet..( not a mazda badge).
Check that vin sticker could be a spec ed.
If its got stainless steel teardrops on the doorcards, strut brace and braces underneath could be spec ed. But after all these years parts can be swapped .

You may be set on a mk1 but do look for a mk2 if you're open minded about them. They're often cheaper and have a stiffer chassis than the mk1 with loads of 1.8 models up for sale. They also have the glass rear window and every sport and limited edition version of the mk2 has a LSD, which you want if this is a track car. As boosted mentioned not many mk1s have a LSD (not even every JDM Eunos).

I know people love the mk1 for it's looks. But if this is a track car then it's easier to find a mk2 that's more suited to the specific job.

Have a look at boosted's. I'm not sure what edition they are.

Vinyl roofs will last forever if looked after. I think they're a good instant visual gauge of whether the car in general has been cared for. If a roof has been left leaking or the rear window is split (if not glass), just walk away.

I'd still lift the bonnet on a mk1 and check the front chassis rail for rust. Not as likely as on a mk2 but worth a check. That's an easy weld job if need be though.

I wouldn't bother with the 1.6 for either the mk1 or mk2 though. Stick to the 1.8. Adding a supercharger or turbo to an old MX5 isn't that expensive or hard. Might be worth considering.

Whatever you buy check the version the seller claims it is against the V5C. When I sold my Mk2 Sport (only 300 or so with it's own bodykit, LSD and a few other nice bits) there were loads of 1.8 S sellers claiming theirs was a 'Sport'. As mentioned owners also love to pinch a sitcker or badge from another car and stick it on their own. Take nothing at face value.
