Brown 1.4l Skoda Estate

Post by PeteH » Mon Feb 11, 2019 4:56 pm

I just realised I never created a thread for the car. And it's such an exciting sounding car too....

Anyway. It's just passed 40k, and had it's major service. It's almost exactly 2 years old. The summary is:

- Nothing gone wrong yet.
- Averaged 47.2mpg since 'birth'
- Still on the original tyres. The fronts are down to 3mm. The rears are at 5.5mm. I'm starting to think about fronts now.
- Still on the original discs (unworn), and pads (25% worn on the front, and 10% worn on the rear).
- Never used any oil (or, I should say, I've never had to top it up between services).

And it's not even boring! It's done one track day so far (the 2017 AGM), and is just about to do it's next one.

I did get a tyre pressure warning notification yesterday, which is it's first dashboard light. It turned out it was just the natural loss over time, and they had dropped from their proper 32psi down to 28psi. I just pumped them up, and they were good to go.

I think the reason I never started a thread is because it's tediously uneventful running this car. :z

Expect an update in about two year's time.

Might as well take the opportunity, since the garage has just washed it.

I'll admit I was somewhat embarrassed at being passed by this thing at Kendrew, especially since my car and I couldn't even put up a fight. I figured it had to be a sleeper of some sort, it went past like I wasn't even trying. The sting faded the following day at the AGM when Soph told me 'that bloke on the committee table, the one on the far left, he's the one who was driving that Skoda yesterday' and it clicked. Proof if it were needed that most of this track driving malarkey is about the driver more than the car :)

I should say thanks to all the RX-8 drivers on track that day. I couldn't get anyone down the straights, so I was relying on people being "kind" to let me past. The only driver I came across who clearly had a "won't pass me" ego was a Celica. Every 8 I came across was happy to let me go. :thumleft: And I should also say, there were a couple of people that I couldn't get (sorry, I never caught you, so I don't know who you were).

Kendrew was tight and technical, and suited the torque of the Skoda. Combe isn't. So it will be interesting to see if I can get near you lot this time.....

The road outside our house has just been resurfaced. By some one in a million chance a piece of the granite chippings was flicked up, attached itself to my windscreen wiper, then my auto-wipers turned on..... The screech was hideous, and after a single wipe I discovered that granite chippings are harder than glass

Has anyone got any experience of a severe scratch? Will my glass insurance cover it? Will it pass an MOT? Does glass polishing work? I'm wondering if I might be unfortunate enough to get a brick on the windscreen soon...

Contact Autoglass directly and they'll sort it all for you.
If it's repairable it should be free on your "glass cover" insurance.
If it's not repairable then it will cost you the excess to have it replaced.

if its not too deep (sub 0.1mm) then it can usually be improved if not fixed ,by polishing
