Gosh, you’ve put a lot into that. Looks great.

But that’s interesting, why a Mk3? Aren’t they cr@p relative to the rest? As a past owner of Mk2 16V and Mk5 GTis, they’re not something I’d look at.

I like the Mk3 and that is a very very nice example. Might just be my age though as they were the ones around when I was a kid

To be clear, I wasn’t criticising the choice here - although not intrinsically rubbish, the original was a bloated slowcoach compared to the then opposition but this is totally different as it’s had everything bad about the Mk3 changed - I was curious as to why. Opinions vary, for example the MkIV is loved by many now but was unloved new, selling the least. I’m excluding the VR6 and R32 versions, both of which were very different.

Until I started on RX8s, I was a keen VW owner brought up on Beetles and VW’s GTis are a bit hit-and-miss. If I didn’t have RX8s I’d buy a used late-model Golf GTi or the cheaper SEAT equivalent. I dislike the current Scirocco but my VW mates love it.

Darren, if only you still had that car you'd be sitting on a goldmine now. Nice looking motor though.

And as for the Golf, that's properly sorted. Used to have a Mk2 back in the day, there are few cars that do as much as the Golf does, as well as the Golf does. Be interesting to see what you could get out of that with a map, now you've had the engine worked over and you've got some good supporting mods in place. I like it :)
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; refurbish steering wheel; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

My car before I bought the Mk2 16v was a Renault 5 GT Turbo, compared to which my mate's Golf GTi Mk2 8v was insipid. I then drove a 16v and was smitten; as long as I kept the revs above 4000 rpm, she went like a bat out of hell, at least compared to the rest of the hot hatch field at the time. There was, though, a horrible gap between the ratios for 2nd and 3rd gears that gave a zone of uncertainty around 50 mph where 2nd was close to max revs and 3rd gave too little power. The 132 bhp was about the most that could be safely put on the road with a FWD car, no electronics and available tyres; the 150 bhp Astra was unmanageable most of the time, but now you can get twice that under control. IMO the Mk5 GTi is the best.

Haha I've got lots more pics and I'll post them up soon ......not sure how receptive people would be to a VW 🙈

As for why I choose a mk3, well as with most things it was never the plan, I grew up in and around mk1's and 2's and had every intention of going in that direction however I ended up stumbling across quite a few mk3's being less desireable and that kind of sold it too me. I 1st had an 8v GTI and then went for the 16v ABF as its lighter and stronger than the vr6 and also handles better. Also I had looked at some of the ABT spec pics from the 90's and again it became a mission to replecate it as well as 97 being the year I passed my test. All in all it took 9yrs to find all the parts and the base model you see actually only cost me £100 too 🙂

Next stage though currently in my unit I'm building a 20vT which will roughly be running around 250bhp by the time I'm done. They are not the prettiest of engines but I need reliability as I'll be off for at least 3 shows in Europe next year.

Looks ace and REALLY clean and shiny.

And WRT it being a VW and this being an RX site - we may have a preference to a rotary, but one of the reasons most of us are here is because we are automotive enthusiasts in general! :P
