Should I have walked away?
Hi!
Looking at buying my first RX8.. very excited!
I've looked at two and just walked away from the second. The car looked great, ~80k miles, 2008. I was just concerned that the owner who has had it two years and covered around 6k miles says the oil never needs topping up. He's had oil changed a couple of times, but says it doesn't lose oil. He thought this was a good thing. He talks about pistons being different to other cars, giving me the impression he maybe doesn't really understand importance of keeping oil topped up.
Oil level was low when I checked, while car was warm. He said this is normal, and it dips whilst being driven.
Was I right to walk away? Should I ask for a compression test??
Thanks!

Thanks everyone. That's reassuring that my instinct was right. The budget may determine whether the Boston Rotary one is viable..

Re: Should I have walked away?
It does look really nice, Pete. I think it may be a couple of thousand more premium than I was aiming for though, and my wife may have strong opinions in that regard.
I'll keep looking. It seems that finding the right owner to buy from is as much of a good starting point as any.

Re: Should I have walked away?
Someone who understands the car is as you say just as important as the car, but its a fact that given the age of these cars, the type of car your after will be few and far between, good solid examples are increasingly harder to find and the only options are to stump up initially or go down the route of paying less and restoration.
Restoring these will cost what you want to spend, whilst keeping it legal and enjoyable, either way there is no way to own these cars without spending.
Please don't be put off they are more than worth it, only posted to give some insight in what ownership is actually like.

The 40th suspension is described as "Uprated Bilstein shock absorbers and urethane foam-filled crossmembers."

Re: Should I have walked away?
I think I'm the member who's done the most comparative testing of the PZ against R3 suspension. I'm going to be a boring broken record that's there's little, if any, tangible difference in handling between the PZ and R3 suspension. While the construction of the parts themselves may be different and Mazda may have copied Prodrive's homework.
If the 40th has suspension similar to either model then that's a win.
I feel I was mislead into buying the PZ suspension as an upgrade to the R3 suspension. It's not. It was a fine, affordable at the time, replacement.

Re: Should I have walked away?
So if you need to replace your suspension now and the PZ stuff is all gone , then what do you fit ?
