Hi all,
Picked up an 04 Lightning Yellow and am starting to put a list together based on my own experiences with the car. Zero history came with it & compression wasn’t great, although I’m unsure if the tester had any/much experience of Rotary engines…it is, what it is as a rebuild is inevitable anyway I reckon.
Central locking-was it standard? this car only has one key, no remote fobs. Is that a simple fix for a local key specialist?
Tyres-is there a recommendation, as I will change all four given I know nothing of their age.
Alloys will need a refurb soon, are there any guides on upgrading to lighter/different sizes?
Full respray needed (yes, it’ll remain yellow!) quoted £3k from a local firm, reasonable? A few dinks/creases need sorting beforehand.
Headlights are mismatched, what are the latest/best options?
Rear lights are soaked, what are the best/latest options?
Fog lights seem ok, any benefits to changing for new/upgraded?
Air intake will remain standard, as will most of the car, going for K&N-any other options or to think about?
Will fit a SOHN, K&N Gold filter, after complete oil change-anything else on the oil system?
Bought new expansion tank, light on dash, will change radiator and hoses too. Best options? Seen Mishimoto and ProAlloy also silicone hose kit on ebay
Running super unleaded with premix now, any point changing fuel pump?
Will change to D585 coil pack (if not done already) and NGK’s, any spec I need to be aware/wary of & HT leads too?
Need to check starter, 2.2kw latest? not that there’s any hot start problems.
Probably spend £10k then it’ll need a full engine rebuild
A new project

Re: A new project
Hi and welcome, pretty rare the yellows. Ive not seen one in a long time. Ive attempted to answer some questions below:
Central locking- Pretty sure it was, altough i dont have any experience with the earlier models of your age. I know my 56 reg had 2 remotes and a grey valet key.
Tyres- At the top of the page for members is a tyre buying app that compares prices of common selections. I personally like michelin PS4, but as mine is dry use I am moving to semi slicks next year.
Alloys - The R3 or PZ wheels are lighter and popular choices. Theyre is usually some PZ wheels knocking about at breakers or FS here.
Full respray needed (yes, it’ll remain yellow!) quoted £3k from a local firm, reasonable? Just a blowover outside if staying same colour? I would say 1k to expensive for a blowover but depends on area.
Headlights are mismatched- easily picked up as a set from breakers.
Rear lights are soaked, what are the best/latest options? Remove, dry and reseal. Think theyre is a guide somewhere here.
Air intake will remain standard, as will most of the car, going for K&N-any other options or to think about? Aftermarkets other than the Revi system can be problematic, see FAQ about it.
Will fit a SOHN, K&N Gold filter, after complete oil change-anything else on the oil system? Look at RRP alternative to sohn

Running super unleaded with premix now, any point changing fuel pump? There is a recall that needs to be carried out on this.
Will change to D585 coil pack (if not done already) and NGK’s, any spec I need to be aware/wary of & HT leads too? D585s are out of fashion, look at RRP ignition system. Direct replacement. Or Mazda newer spec coils.

Re: A new project
check for recalls, you may find that fuel pump and some suspension parts are covered by this, good luck, keep us posted, rob.

Re: A new project
I’m in North Yorkshire, I will press on with the RRP options
Will check Revi, my mate works at Mazda dealer & tells me all recalls were done.
Starter in 2006
Fuel filter Sept 2020
Strange “plastic bag blowing around” sound coming from behind dash/glovebox…is it the SSV or something else-like an actual plastic bag as it was when aircon was on

Re: A new project
Check your cabin air filters. The fan and filters for the AC/Heater are behind there, so could be a leaf or something blowing around. Worth pulling out the glovebox and checking what they look like or at least it'll let you listen closer all of the 8's i've had always had filthy filters, first thing I do now is change 'em ha! only about a tenner if they need replacing if you get the blueprint ones
It's an LHD video, but it's just the mirror image

Re: A new project
Another reason for blowing noises from passenger footwell is low coolant level, strange, but that was what made a noise in mine.

Re: A new project
Ryan Rotary Performance ignition upgrades are the sensible choices, and i am going to be adding there pil feed system in the near future. Also you can have a play with their rebuild config tool aswell. So many shiny and painty options with ports....one day.Fritchard wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 11:12 pmI’m in North Yorkshire, I will press on with the RRP options
