Hot start and screeching problems

Post by Perera »

Hi I have had my Rx8 for about a month now using her as a daily driver,
And I did a 60 mile trip filled her up at the petrol station and would not start, had to wait 30 min and started up fine, I took it to where I had to go and when I started her up 8 hours later (no problems with cold start )there was a horrible sceaching, like grinding high pitch sound this did go away after 20 min of driving,

I am obviously concerned I am away for a week on a training and have to drive there and back to my hotel and then drive home,
If it is coils or spark plugs might have a go doing it myself,

Can anyone help a newbie to the Rx8 world and help is appreciated.
I live in north London and access to M1 and north is easy if anyone can help with a garage to go to as well, it has 88k miles and rebuild by Haywards at 50k
Many thanks in advance

You'll need a compression test to see how the compression is? Hot starting problems are a symptom of low compression. Get her to a specialist where they'll do the test for you, DO NOT take it to a dealer, you'll get hammered on the price, a specialist should do it for between 40-50 quid

I'd say a compression test would be a good idea and its possible that the main bearing may be on the way out
however also check the state of the belt and perhaps pop it off and check the AC pump, water pump an alternator all turn freely

I echo what has been posted above but would add that the screeching was probably the alternator belt slipping as the load just after starting is higher as the alternator is recharging the battery then the load dies away as the battery is charged so the screech disappears, until the next start up!

I'm with Chris on this one, as the alternator belt was the first thing that came to mind reading your post.

Specifically, the failure to restart would have significantly drained the battery putting an extra load on the alternator to compensate.

You might find that there's little or no screech the next time you start, depending how much that takes.

Low compression is the most obvious cause of the hot-restart issue, but by no means the only possible cause.

A proper rotary compression test is the only way to confirm or disprove that as a cause.

Complete your profile, including your location, as some members have their own testers and you might just get lucky ;)

A rough check for alternator & belt is to switch everything electrical on the whole lot the xtra load will test the belt.

Could also be a faulty air pump...

The air pump should only engage on particularly cold starts, and then for less than a minute.

Screech and difficulty starting could be down to a seized ancillary(water pump, alternator, air con compressor or tensioner) I have watch a YouTube channel on an American trying to start his 8, he's not the best and takes shortcuts(like spraying belts with WD-40 so they slip) he had a similar problem due to the physical resistance created by something seized (can't remember if it was tensioner or ancillary)

The idler pulley is a favourite for this

^I second that as a strong possibility, having suffered a similar sounding problem last month. A seized idler pulley on the A/C belt. Essex Rotary kindly supplied a replacement pulley from a breaker (and a new belt, which shredded!) and this has sorted the issue.
