Evening all!
Bought a 2005 rx8 on a bit of whim... It had been sat parked up for a while needed some love, I knew it needed welding and some bits doing, got told it ran before it was parked up and needed some new coils and plugs... however that's not the case , oh well, needs an engine rebuild because it only seems to be running on the rear rotor!
So will probably be a long term project for me, I just need some free time to rip the engine out and get stuck in...
Heres some pics of it looking sorry for itself!
Hello all!

Re: Hello all!
You will find endless amounts of helpful people and info here. If it's been sat for a while defo start with new plugs, and inspect the coils. What makes you say it's running only on the rear rotor? If you haven't already, I would also recommend getting an up to date compression test done, that will help give an insight into the health of the engine.
I am sure you'll have a blast putting it right and once it's sorted they are fantastic cars to drive.

Re: Hello all!
Definitely a project! To add to my list of other projects
I changed the coils and plugs on it, ran like it had a misfire, if I pull a lead off the front rotor is doesnt change the way it runs so figured it was an issue with that... it's got spark on all 4 plugs. I dont have a proper rotory compression tester just a normal one to give me an idea on what it was like, I cant remember the exact figures I got but I remember the front being substantially lower than the rear one. It's been parked up for a bit now until I clear a bit of drive space to have a further look into it!

Re: Hello all!
Hmm...
Where abouts are you located? I know there are a few members dotted about that have rotary compression testers and also the specialist rotary garages that have the same facilities to do comp tests for you, if you're close by I'm sure you might be able to get a helping hand at least on the testing side of things
Definitely seems interesting. If it's running with a misfire, what code are you getting? 300/301/302? Might be worth trying to narrow down what part it could be causing it by swapping one at a time between rotors and checking the code to see if it's followed the change or not.

Re: Hello all!
I'm near wigan
Oddly when I've scanned it I've got no fault codes, tried swapping over coils plugs and leads and it still stays with the front rotor, going to borrow my mates endoscope sometime and take a look through the plug hole for anything obvious before ripping the engine out I think.
Take a bit to get started when it's cold and almost impossible to start when warm.... normally with a set of jump leads connected and a battery pack for the amount of cranking it needs.... never seen a starter motor take so much abuse before

Re: Hello all!
If you pull a lead off either trailing plug then it's unlikely to be that noticeable, as the trailing plugs main role is to get the last bit of power out of the combustion and clean up emissions - yes, I knowJayCran wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 9:33 pmDefinitely a project! Re: Hello all!
Oh well! Kind of looking forward to pulling the engine apart, never worked on a rotory... what's the worse that could happen!

Re: Hello all!
I unplugged the lead plug first and then out of curiosity pulled the trail as well, still made no change to how it ran at least I know the rear seems to be doing somethingwarpc0il wrote: ↑Fri Nov 05, 2021 8:32 pmIf you pull a lead off either trailing plug then it's unlikely to be that noticeable, as the trailing plugs main role is to get the last bit of power out of the combustion and clean up emissions - yes, I knowJayCran wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 9:33 pmDefinitely a project!
