I would have guessed air pump as well. Mine makes a bit of noise when she’s been standing for a while but it usually disappears after a few seconds (I believe warpc0il advised it’s not uncommon and not a problem)

Believe it’s a relatively cheap, easy fix if it is on the way out so would make a decent negotiating point with the dealer 👍

Cheers nightfire10, I've picked up on that - body work & rot I'm reasonably happy to check myself. The .gov website is great these days for checking the MOT history of a car, with the amount I've looked up over the last month I'm waiting to have my IP address banned from spamming it!!!!

Thanks Mark, Is it difficult / expensive to replace the SAI pump - specialist tools or can it be done on the driveway with little swearing & skinned knuckles?

As always, the advice from this forum is really appreciated!!!

Brilliant, thanks Cscameron. I've just done a little googling & it seems cheap / easy to sort if needed.

I think I'll have to face the mega train journey down south tomorrow & view it in person :fingerscrossed: :o

Don't worry, you only get timed out for an hour or so if you've been spamming it too much in a short period of time. Ask me how I know  I had too many reg's to check ha!

And the great thing about phones too is, just switch to data instead of WiFi and you're golden to go again until they think you're spamming too much on that ;) :giggle:

Epic 3.5hr train trip mostly with rowdy Man City fans on their way to Leicester, short taxi ride from Luton train station to the dealers & after the number of dogs I've seen I wasn't expecting much.

Pleasantly surprised! Paint needs a good cut & polish but relatively blemish free, alloys are scabby but with matching Bridgestone Potenza boots, engine silky smooth, slightly lumpy at tick over, best though it it catches 2nd turn when cold & 3rd turn after driving it ~200miles home.

Booked in to Rotary Revs in a couple of weeks for a compression test & health check.

Not bad really - £2,350 including AA breakdown cover 👍

All known to be a little lumpy at tick over, so unlikely to be a concern. 2/3 turns hot and cold is pretty inspiring too. 2006 at 51k - starts well, looks clean on the outside and the cabin.
I don't think the whine is anything to be too concerned by either, it sounds possibly stepper-motorish - maybe the OMP?

Strangely enough there wasn't a whine when I went to view it, the engine was as cold as it could have been when I 1st turned it over but it was 21deg yesterday, perhaps the CAI didn't need to kick in.

Changing all fluids today, next weekend I'll see how well the paint buffs up then the following Saturday I'll get the expert opinion by RR. No guarantees but I'll sleep a bit better after that if I get told it seems straight enough.

Oh, sort my membership for RX8 OC also & get access to the really useful information for members. 👍

As soon as I get my membership paid I think I'll start a project thread...

Yesterday was a simple couple of jobs - T-cut the paint & headlights. Happy with the result, especially the lights as I can now see the bulbs instead of a yellow, smokey blob!

Took my son to school this morning, drove nice & carefully, it is a short drive ~3miles but mostly up steep hills. Engine was nice & warm. Stopped at the shop on the way home, started up as normal & without issue, pulled out onto the main road & smoothly accelerated in 1st to about 4k rpm & there was a judder, loss of power & CEL is now flashing :(

Quick trip to the local Euro Car Parts in my daily driver, picked up an ODB scanner & I've got P0300 / P0301 faults showing - random misfire / front rotor misfire. Now I'm worried...

I don't know the condition of the plugs, leads or coils so I expect that's the 1st port of call :(

Oh the joys of owning an RX8 :(

"Misfire" just means that the power pulses are uneven, not necessarily ignition related.

Did you top up the oil?
Could you have overfilled?

I've not touched the oil, its was about 3/4 on the dip stick when cold when I checked before driving it home on Saturday, same level (or so) now after about 300 miles.

When the fault 1st occurred this morning the CEL was flashing, this is now permanently on - ODB reader is still stating P0300 / P0301 faults

MAF was clean as a whistle but I gave it a spray with MAF cleaner, air filter & pipes are also clean & in good condition.

Performed the PCM reset. Before the PCM recent the engine ticked over fine or at 500rpm & obviously lumpy. After the reset tick-over is around 1,000 rpm but very lumpy, both exhausts sound / feel by hand as though they're blowing pulses of air out rather than a steady flow - bad spark? With a piston engine I'd say it sounds like it wasn't firing on all cylinders.

Coils out & tested, infinite resistance on coil #2 between C & A pins. Hopefully when I replace that 1 tomorrow it'll clear the fault & then I'll know replacing the full set of coils, leads & plugs is a winner. If this doesn't sort it I guess it'll be recovered to Rev's when they have a free slot.

Wish me luck!

New coil in & plugs changed which was a good choice, 1 of the plugs was knackered - I don't think the top section should come clear of the ceramic???

Started her up & things seemed positive; had to turn the wheel left / right to clear the DSC light & then restarted to check everything seemed good before a test drive.

Left her idling on the drive & I could smell something hot, looked underneath at the cat & around the sensor was glowing red - is this normal or do I have to consider a blocked cat?

Good to hear it's running better after the ignition refresh! Although if run with worse than optimal ignition systems for an extended period, they are known to be rather harsh to the cats that are still installed, so with that glowing like in the photo, I would definitely say consider a blocked cat. Your username may well have cursed you on that one! I've certainly never known a functioning cat to glow like that, so unless someone else has a better idea than I, i'd say pull the cat off and at least check :D

So the ignition has failed and that has lead to the cat blocking up. You can only see the sensor part glowing as the rest is hidden under the heat shield.
Do not run the car with the cat blocked. The back pressure caused by this can and will cook the engine. Stock cats are insanely expensive, 200cpi sports cats can be had on ebay for around £200. Decats are also available, but, well, tricky and not legal. At all.

That cat is blocked, be careful buying a replacement. Get one from a specialist like Essex rotary (Their YouTube link on the subject below) but plenty of other rotary specialists will be able to advise on a suitable replacement for your needs.

If you can't afford a cat then you can just hollow out that cat and run it as a decat, or just buy any cheap decat for about 100 quid.

Some specialists/garages may be kind and lend you a cat for MOT day.

Or buy a new 200 cell cat as others suggested. Whatever you do don't buy a cat from ECP or a chain parts fitter.

As others said don't run it until you've fixed it... well done for noticing before you blew the engine.

So you bought an RX8 with a knackered ignition that has killed your cat. That's common as most people don't service their cars properly. I'd recommend replacing any ignition parts that you haven't already done yourself. Especially now you know that the previous owner didn't take care of it. At least you know and can treat it better than they did!

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I'm trying to get my RX8 running straight before I take the plunge fitting high quality parts - hence the reason I only replaced 1 suspect coil, happy the plugs were on a 45% off deal to my local parts shop though!

Decat will be the way to go to see if that solves the issue, I think I can get a Toyo for £99. I know they're crap but I'm considering it fault finding equipment. Once all is running OK then I'll splash out on a coil pack & a manifold back exhaust from RRP.

I knew I'd have to throw some money at whatever RX8 I bought but I didn't think I'd be fixing it 2 days into ownership :o

It's still booked in at Revs for a health check & compression test this Saturday but I need to be able to bloody drive it the 30miles to get it there!!!

The strange thing about it Duke is the more I look over the car as I'm working on it, it seems to have been at least semi-maintained - 4 almost new Bridgestone Potenza boots, very clean air filter, new rotors & pagid pads on all 4 corners, looks like a new battery, new oil filter.

Good thing about getting a decat to test with, is there are plenty of people who want to buy them at any time, so it's not lost money if you don't want to keep it on the car since someone will happily take it off your hands for similar money, and even if the cat is collapsed - since it's the OEM one it should still be worth some mulah even not intact I'd have thought :-k it's a pain to deal with since you don't really want to drive it on a blocked exhaust, but honestly shouldn't be too bad to solve :thumleft:
