I am a Merc Man - sorry but I am.
Now I have inherited my brothers RX-8 after he passed away a year ago. It has been sat around since he passed and is a non starter. It is an 08 plate automatic (so an import). I believe it to be a 232 HP engine. It was delivered on a recovery truck, I believe the driver tried to start it when he loaded it, which I didn’t think was a good idea he said it sounded noises so turned it off.
Now I have had a chance to look over it - the battery was dead - so new one purchased - now cranks - no noises - but no sign of firing. I will be slowly running through the normal checks - fuel / sparks etc ....
Will keep a post running with up dates - I will keep the car due to the personal history.

Re: Very new to Mazda & RX-8
Now I have read about this flooding problem, does it drain away over night or do you have to pull the plugs to clear it?

Re: Very new to Mazda & RX-8
That link contains the bread and butter of how to deal with flooding. Try with clutch/accelerator depressed first for a few times, and if necessary then go to plug removal. Most times it should be ok without removing plugs, but there's a chance it may still need it if it's well and truly flooded
From what you've said, it hopefully does just seem like it's flooded, which while it may take some persistence and time to get it sorted and cleared out, it's generally not a serious issue once all is said and done

Re: Very new to Mazda & RX-8
as its an auto a tow start will be tricky ( not impossible though)
probably best off to pull the plugs and spin it over on the starter to clear it

Re: Very new to Mazda & RX-8
Hi and MRWight - and sorry to hear about your brother. As above, with the rotary engine if it is flooded you have to actively deflood it, there is nowhere for the excess fuel to drain away to.
If you are spinning the engine with the throttle down to deflood it is worth having it hooked up to another car with the engine running to save draining the battery, just like you would for a jump start.

If that doesn't work then there's always the branch method
