Well ...it would run to 9000 if I wasn't doing the tuning. If I do the tuning, I'd be cutting you off at 8500 at least ...maybe lower. There are a few good reasons for this.
If a 9000 rev limit and going slow is what you want ... don't turbo it ;)

FWIW I own an N/A (220whp) and a turbo (415whp) RX8. I also do a lot of windy road driving as well as track days. I pretty much never drive the N/A fast anymore ...it's just for cruising. It actually feels like hard work to drive it fast because you have to keep the revs so high to get anywhere. The turbo on the other hand just begs to go fast , it's almost relaxing to go at a pace the N/A would find impossible (while not doing more than 6500rpm). Maybe it's just me getting older ... :dunno:

With that rev limit the motor should get older with you!

for me the 9000rpm is a large part of the engines appeal, so it's a shame to lose that ceiling

what are your reasons for limiting the rpm? is it just to help seal life ?
what I'm getting at is there's no reason why the turbo shouldn't still work at those rpm but I do understand why limiting the rpm is good ide on an otherwise stock engine once boosted

I suspect that peak power, and definitely peak torque, is reached at a much lower rpm with a turbo.

The Renesis is somewhat exhaust gasflow limited, so this becomes a roadblock as the revs increase.

A turbo engine should produce more power at 9krpm than a NA engine, but it would have already produced its maximum earlier.

Leaving the rev limit at 9k therefore just increases stress for no power benefit.

If I fitted a turbo I'd also consider swapping to the 5-speed 'box, as they appear to be more robust and the ratios are probably a better match for the power/torque curve.

Firstly , as warpcoil pointed out , the power is dropping away from about 7500 on good setups anyway so there is no gain in doing so. A sign of a poor setup , is that it makes it's power much later. We see this on setups with decent sized turbos but high backpressure from pipework/exhaust/IC etc.
More important is the reason why power drops away, which I believe is due in part to increased exhaust gas carryover from the inability of the ports to expel all the exhaust gas at high mass flows. This leads to added risk of detonation at high rpm.
Lastly the loads on the bearings increase exponentially as rpms increase. The N/A engine is built for N/A loads but when those loads increase the added stress on the bearings at high rpm will wear them out at a much faster rate.
Warpcoil .... agree re the 5 speeed . That's what I've run for years.

Is your car the one Flameshades built ? I do remember his APVs stopped working at some stage. Wedging them open isn't a great idea . Apart from the low rpm power drop , you get a LOT of blowback into the uim which will heat it up a lot and cause it to clog up over time.

I do have that car , yes .
But it’s a different kit I’m referring to which has ran like a bag of sh*t since I’ve had it .
It’ll be going to be mapped soon , and it’s cable tied open . So Best cut them off then ?
So asking your opinion Image

I wouldn't leave them open myself ..... pretty sure there are people that do though. As to how bad the drawbacks are .... I really don't know.

Edit : although ...you just said it runs like a bag of sh*t so ......... that's the first thing I'd do towards getting it running well.
I do remote tuning BTW ;)

Saw this on Facebook, looks like the Renesis engine responds well to Meth

Turbo looks comically large but seems to fit into the engine bay

I think you mean it is comically large

my oh my it looks ridiculous #-o still - would be interesting to see how it's done. Then again, it's only 5k miles so you'd damn well hope it's intact

For those looking at the boost pressure quoted in PSI, please note that comparing boost pressure from one turbo compressor to the next or even a supercharger is not possible, boost pressure in terms of system power is irrelevant and what matters is Total System Flow not pressure.
Or to quote the legendary "Banks" air density is all that matters :)

That setup was built for a landspeed attempt and doesn't spool up till 6000ish rpm with a 1000rpm power band (so far) . Very cool project but it's the polar opposite to what I'm doing with mine. Not sure why it's posted on this thread ?

While we're slightly off tangent here...

In the late 1970's I used to moonlight for Gus Kuhn Motorcycles, doing various things behind the scenes for their race workshop.

Originally this was with Norton Commandos but later with BMWs, where they would enter they're own team in Endurance Racing, and prepare bikes for other race customer teams.

It was always fun being given a road-going BMW R90S, with a fully tuned racing engine, some spare oil strapped on the back seat and a fuel card in the back pocket, with orders to put a few hundred miles on it before breakfast the next day.

I can confirm that I would have a few "occasional .... OH :censored: !!!! moments" when the engine would come on-cam half way around a greasy roundabout, or when they'd taken the tuning or "adding lightness" too far and an engine seized at a hundred and plenty on the A3
