Gearbox issue or not ?

Post by arcueid »

Hi all!

French owner here (Sorry for my writing !), since I bought it 2 years ago, I hear a cracking noise within 2000-2500rpm range.
It is a 2006 blue 231hp with a 6 shift level gearbox.

For history, the gearbox has been opened twice by previous owner's garage.
After expertise, my garage opened it and changed 5 bearings and the clutch release bearing.
The cracking noise is still here, and the 6th does a bit more noise.
Another owner lends me a gearbox.
The cracking noise is still here, an overall noise is also present with this gearbox.
We drove it this morning with the expert, and we are waiting for the original gearbox to be installed, for comparison.

Today it is a bit confusing, and the expert doesn't know if it is normal or not.
The garage says it lacks of insulation (noise reduction), but S1's does not seems to have much insulation...

I'm coming to you to know if someone already seen such issue, or have any idea to solve it!

Best regards,
Alex.

I'm not aware of any issue with cracking noise from the gearbox.

The gearbox can be quite noisy, more a rustling noise, in neutral with the clutch up, which goes away when the clutch is down.
This can be worse if the gearbox oil is overdue for a change or the wrong oil has been used - must be GL-4 not GL-4/5 or GL-5 for the 6-speed. It can also be more noticeable if the rubber boot under the gear change lever has split.

Other than that, these gearboxes aren't known for noises, at all.

The clutch release bearing can be noisy, particularly if a cheap one has been used, but you say that's been changed.

I suspect that the noise isn't coming from the gearbox at all.

Can you capture a video and put it on youtube, or somewhere else that we can view and hear.

Hi warpcOil,
Thanks for this comment, I'll speak about this with expert and my garage.
At the moment, my car stayed in the garage, I can ask him to make a quick video.

Another thing, I observed gear shifter move quite much when car is idle, neutral gear. That look surprising for a rotary engin ... That's may not say anything ...

It's worth checking the engine mounts if the gearstick moves around a lot.

Thinking about it, a totally failed engine mount could make a cracking noise, as you apply/release power

I've seen something here too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnQJ6njzI4A

Noise is when I apply power in 2nd (I have to press more gas), 3rd, 4th, 5th(little harder to reproduce), 6th(becomes harder to reproduce)

Hi all,

Test with expert is done and sound is still present with original gearbox.
The grinding sound can be hear at this link, around 25":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJVjbeaoUrc

Engine mounts have been checked by the garage and looks ok.

We have no clues, I will try another garage to get another point of view.
Any ideas are welcome !

Alex.

that sounds more like the differential to me as its very much load related
has the oil been drained and its condition checked for metal flakes ?
what state are the diff mounts in? is the PPF ( big metal beam that joins the gearbox to axle) aligned correctly?https://www.rx8performance.com/pages/tech-tips

garage had feeling noise comes from rear of the car, maybe differential, but I don't think he checked further on this side.
About alignment, he told me everything was ok, but with an eye of someone that doesn't know much the car.

Next week, I will but my rx8 to another garage, to get a new and fresh vision.
I will give your recommendations. Thanks !

During this time I may take pictures of different points if you want. Can you tell me precisely were the mounts are ?

Unless the garage knew what they were looking for they may miss knackered mounts.

Ok the mount you suggested me last time, I thought it was others on differential (sorry for my pour french).

I suggested garage to look for engin mounts, he checked and tell me they are good. I may check by myself or with the other garage ^^

Thanks so far guys ;)

Driver side = okay
Passenger side = failed

It's common for the right side to fail first due to the heat from the exhaust manifold.

you can make a repair by drilling out the underside on the failed mount and filling with silicone
its not as good as a new OEM mount but its considerably cheaper and works better than a failed OEM mount

By "silicone", did you mean "polyurethane" ?
I can't see silicone being sturdy enough, but I haven't tried it.

Hi all,

The other garage observed engine mounts and said both are quite used: driver's one is too low and passenger's one is too high.
I'm going to change them.
Which parts would you recommend me ?

He also also observed differential mounts are a bit crackled.

Alex.
