New Member - JDM Import

Post by mattym85 »

Hello, I have just imported an RX-8 from Japan, its an early one 2003 model in Nordic Green and has only covered 25,000 miles. (41k km)

I am a dealer and hope it is ok to be on here, I have joined as a person and not to promote.

We usually only import MPVs but I was offered this and simply could not refuse.

I will be changing as much as possible to UK spec, I have the head unit and sat nav buttons already and just awaiting to see if my speedo guy has the software to convert to MPH (it doesn't have the buttons to switch like some other models). My next job is to buy a uk nav DVD for the rear armrest as unsure if a Euro DVD will update, they are pretty cheap on ebay so will get one and see what happens.

Unsure how to add an image but sure I will figure it out.

Matt

Hi and :welcome: Matt. :) Nordic green is a nice and very rare colour these days ... and that mileage at that age is impressive.

Nope, only the single trip button unfortunately so looking like maybe software change if possible and a heads up display, I don't know enough about the RX-8 to know if it would be possible to fit a set of uk clocks, if I could find a set that was, automatic.

And yes, it was expensive, but sometimes its nice to just have something special and bring it over and usually the people who buy them are enthusiasts and go to a good home, so always worthwhile in the end.

I will upload a picture once I figure out how to do it, will check the forum for details.

Thanks for the welcomes.

I assume as a JDM it doesn't have the button on the dash, or does it?

Hi Dave - Correct on mine (JDM) it only has 1 button which is the trip button.

My JDM had 2 buttons and read in MPH no problem, but is an Evolve model.

If it has cruise control you'll find it only works up to 62 mph (100kmh) due to Japan's speed limits. There's no way of removing this without changing the ECU to UK spec etc.

I don't have the original clocks...can't remember if Pete at Boston Rotary or Nick changed them over for me after the manual swap was done. If it was Pete, he doesn't throw much away in case someone wants it later  so he may have them and were low mileage at around 52k I think.

Other than changing out the stereo (and sat nav) there's not much else needs to be done to get to UK spec unless you have the smaller brakes which can fit 16 inch wheels.

If it's an auto, the box drains a lot of power to the wheels (about 20%) and I'd certainly recommend only driving in manual mode on the paddles as in 'D' it's appalling and wants to be in top gear very early in the rev range. Good on fuel on long trips though as 4th is a very long gear indeed

I can explain it, but I can't understand it for you.

I wouldn’t bother with the SatNav as it’s so outdated image wise and also road wise.

Sounds like great plans for that car. How's it now? My uncle used to have a 2003 RX8 and it was also green. I'm coming over to his garage this week to help him install the rack and bakflip cover onto his pick-up truck. I'll see if he still got some photos of the RX8.
