Misfire in 2004 RX-8
Hi i have a 2004 rx8 192 covered 65500 miles.
I have had the car 13.5 years. it has been regulary serviced and all recalls updated.
recently in heavy rain the car had the engine management light flicker then permanantly display.
I have read the forums and have changed the plugs, crank sensor and leads.
the car runs perfectly for around 5 miles.
when you put strain on the engine and try to accelerate the light flashes and limp mode. A few hundred yards later the car bursts back into life. it will then run perfectly for a long period of time .
Out of nowhere it starts splutter again then rectifies itself.
I have read about the problomatic symtems rotorary engines have. Also how expensive they are when they go wrong.
This is the first major problem in 13.5 years.
could anyone point me in the right direction please ?
Thanks inadvance.

Re: miss fire in 2004 rx8
First thing you need to identify what CEL codes have been stored.
viewtopic.php?f=25&t=43997
Flashing CEL indicates a misfire viewtopic.php?f=25&t=80593&p=1233254#p1233254 but there could be something else.
However, misfire does not trigger "limp mode" so either it isn't a true limp mode, just down on power, or something like a poor OMP connection is triggering limp mode - in which case it will be recorded by the PCM.

Re: miss fire in 2004 rx8
thank you all for your help.
I will change coils , and get omp connection looked at.
do i need a dealer to give me a diagnostic for the codes or can any reader let me know?
I used rac when broke down, and gave me miss fire in 2nd cylinder and crank sensor. i changed plugs, leads & crank sensor (Guess i should have changed the coils at time)
if that fails i will need some further help.
Regards
Rob

Buy a cheap elm327 clone (suitable for your phone} and invest in an appropriate app (torque) probably cost less than a tenner all together.

Re: miss fire in 2004 rx8
I have had 13 years trouble free motoring with the car off road for winter last 6 years.
the pst twelve months i have had a miss fire in pot 2 so i changed plugs, leads coil. That worked. Following it being garaged it the battery went dud, Ichanged the battery. The car then had a miss fire pot 1 i have change exhaust and cat. the car will run ok for a few mile then miss fire badly. the last time trying to get car home 6 miles in traffic the exhaust got that hot it glowed orange. Does anybody have an explnation or is it time to move it on ? It is in very good condition for age only covering 65000 miles.

yeah, take the coils back. even if they're not the issue, (and id bet they are) they soon will be.

Halford coils would be my first suspicion.rob fullwood wrote:i used genuine mazda leads and plugs, halfords coils. the cat was sourced by a mechanic, it has a new stainless steel exhaust. engine miss fires and cat glows. any ideas?
