Hey everyone, just bought an RX8 and I've got some newbie questions

Post by Fivec »

Hey guys, loving this forum. I've read through most of the FAQ and found most things i wanted to know, just have a few random questions. Previous owner was using 5w30 and I plan to switch to 10w40 but I'm not sure how to go about it. Do i flush out as much as I can, or just drain the sump and refill it? or can I just start topping up the current oil with 10w40? The other thing is, i want to take it for a compression test and I was wondering if anyone has a recommended place. I'm located in Huddersfield, the closest options I've found are a Mazda dealership and Rotary Revs in Bradford but i'm not sure whether or not they're reputable. Thanks! Here's a picture of this beauty, she's a 2007 S1 Image

Go to rotary revs for a compression test they will charge you far less than a stealership would. As for your oil question, drain the sump replace with 10w40, run it for a bit and do another change (I'd consider not changing the oil filter on the first change). The oil coolers will have 5w30 in them even after the first change so a double change is the only real way to get rid of most of it. After that you should in theory be mostly 10w40.

Welcome, personally when I have changed to 10w40 I just drain as normal, you only get a certain amount of oil out (about 4l of 7l capacity roughly speaking) so the 10w40 content will increase as you make regular changes. For the cost of oil, it could be worth doing a second change after running the car for a few miles though.
I would definitely be going to Revs for the compression test rather than Mazda dealer.

Also remember that unless you have a sohn/cofs fitted, you will be topping up quite often too.

Hi and :welcome: Fivec. :D Take it to Rotary Revs, they are far more reputable than Mazda dealerships. :thumright:

Yep, RRevs are a well recognised specialist, most Mazda dealerships are not reliable unfortunately when it comes to 8's. There are some that are ok, but they're few and far between (and often rely on asking for the one particular mechanic who gives a monkey about rotaries).

As others have said, double oil change is the dish of the day for moving over to 10w40 - I'd chuck a pattern oil filter (JapanParts do a £3 one on Amazon...) on for the initial change and then another for the second as you'll have flushed loads of gank out and will have a chance to clear it all out. If you're spending ~£50 on 10L of 10w40 what's another £3?
