New member looking for a tidy RX8

Post by Ben_r1 »

Evening all. New member here not currently lucky enough to own an RX8 but on the look out for my ideal car. Will be used as an occasional daily when my commute needs cheering up.

Currently own an FD RX7 Type RS so not new to rotaries and their woes but never owned an 8.

Thanks all for the welcome.

There just so happens to be £5k s1 with a recent ish rebuild that's rather famous for sale if you have a look in the rx8s for sale section. If its worth the 5k to you is another matter as to most people that's R3 money.

Hi mate I saw Felix in the for sale ad but as you’ve said it’s priced too high for my liking.

Felix is for sale right now, if I was going to buy another RX8, I’d buy that one!

He’s just listed it on the Facebook pages too so I doubt it’ll be around for long.

Watch the videos on youtube and then buy it!!

I personally don't think that even with the felix link it's still not worth 5k

The cost of a basic rust free shell, with a top engine rebuild puts it up there, in my opinion. There are £2.5k cars out there with no history and no rebuild. This is so well documented that I think it’s got to be worth somewhere between £3.5 and £5k?

It's over priced because it's the You Tube RX-8, which is a great shame :(

It's priced at 5k to claw back the money they have spent on it, unfortunately that's not how it works when coming to buying secondhand cars :!: :!:

Isn’t it a 190 model though? I’ve watched all the videos been a fan of CarThrottle for a while now but even still I think it’s overpriced. Now at £3500 he’d have a buyer!

Looking at a black R3 op’north appears very clean and buyer genuine but it’s a Cat D which is a little off putting. Seen all the prior damage and it’s really not that bad but have to think of resale value when the time comes.

New member looking for a tidy RX8

Post by Pingping010101 »

It’s not my place to defend someone else’s asking price, but I’m over £5000 in to my car and it’s worse than the one advertised. If Felix has been available at the same time, I’d have bought it. I think the extra value comes from the documentation and the engine rebuild - it’s not something you get with most cars and I personally think that is worth the premium.

But again, we all value different things in our cars and it’s not me buying or selling. But I personally would pay £5k for it, it I haven’t just dumped a load of money in to a rusty one instead!

Hi and :welcome: Ben_r1. :D Assuming you have decided you won't be buying Felix (I need to have a look and see what all the fuss is about) so the talk of the asking price here is largely irrelevant to you I'll just say happy hunting and good luck. :thumleft:

I don't like reading threads like this. When I did my first rebuild I thought I could justify it with the future value of the car. With 2 rebuilds now and fixing a load of stuff I've now spent twice what Felix is going for, on my car, and it seems a future owner will not really care that much. I have no plans to sell it, just find it sad RX8's don't get more love.

I'm with you Pingping010101, I think Felix is a bargain for the amount spent on it, but then I've never had to buy an RX8 second-hand so don't know the range out there. If you can get a similar or better car for cheaper then that's sadly thats the market, sellers can't try and go high because of what they've spent.

Good luck to the original poster, I hope you find what you're looking for, and hopefully see you around here in the future!

I paid a premium for my RX8 because it had just had a rebuild done at a very reputable garage; two track days later and 3 months from purchase engine went bang.
Car sent to original rebuilder for second rebuild and cooling problem fixing at a cost of over one and a half times the original cost of the car; that lasted two track days before engine again seemed to blow up - gave car away.

Picked one up at the weekend, budget managed to stretch to an R3 which was 5 hours away so it was a long day but a fun drive home.

Only niggles so far appear to be a little spot of rust on the front edge of the bonnet and some pitted rear discs, drove home faultlessly.

Lots of work to come to get it up to standard both mechanically and bodywork.

That won't be "rust" on the bonnet - as it's aluminium alloy :D

Thanks all, Bonnet is already off being resprayed.

Attempted to do an oil change last night opened up a real can of worms. Appeared to have a small leak from the sump so I removed to reseal and it was very rusty. I rubbed it down to treat and repaint and ended up finding a couple of pinholes so now have a sump on order from Mazda.
