New member here - evolve - just saying hey

Post by MX-3fan »

Hi guys and gals. New member here but not new to RX-8s. I previously had a strato blue 04 which died rather spectacularly and at the time I needed a vehicle so bought something as a run around.

I picked up another 8 the other day as a project really. It was sold with low compression but I have my doubts on this. Anyway the car is an 06 evolve which is the model I have wanted for years so to see one come up relatively cheap I had to have it, even if it was low compression.

I have a few bits on order for it for general maintenance really. New starter motor as the old one sounded like it was slipping badly! New battery because for some reason the one in there was 500cca and 53ah! No wonder it won't hot start! Plugs and leads. Coils should be OK as it has D585 coils on it. I ordered a set of the solenoids (SSV etc) because I know that they can fail at any time, i'd rather have some on hand for when they do.

I'd post up a couple of images but have no idea which host to use, photobucket seems to be as good as dead now so any suggestions would be cool.

Hi and :welcome: MX-3fan. :D I don't use any photo hosting sites myself, but maybe Flickr would be OK? If you join the club you can just stick photos in your posts straight from your phone or computer.

As you've had an RX-8 before I'll assume you don't need my 'tips for new owners' (check through a few of the other hello threads and you will find them soon enough if you're curious). It sounds like you're doing all the right things so far anyway. :thumleft:

Thanks for the warm welcome. Yeah I have a little experience with these thankfully so hopefully it will be a good motor. 77k on it but I definitely don't suspect it to be a compression issue... yet, but I will be getting it rebuilt anyway for piece of mind. For what I paid it's worth doing :) Just need to go stock up on some oil. With that mileage would you recommend 10/40 mineral or slightly thicker?

10/40 miller's trident is the go to in general. Allegedly helps to protect the bearings with the original oil pressure regulator installed.

Welcome!

I use imgbb for hosting all my pictures on here, I find it easy to upload to from my phone (where I take most of my pictures), its easy to use to grab the photos from whether you're on mobile or desktop, and if you're not very tech savvy it gives you all the embed codes to copy/paste straight into the bbcode format that the site uses with no faff or knowledge required. Oh and it's free! Important bit...

I would highly recommend joining the club, we're a friendly lot and you gain access to a lot of extra stuff when you're a member that can prove an absolute godsend when you're working on the car.

Yeah, just go straight to the 10w40 regardless of mileage

Excellent thank you all for the information. I will be giving it a full service once my parts arrive. For now it's more keeping my fingers crossed that the starter, battery and plugs help it fire up when hot :) I'll get some oil on order from opie anyway

Welcome! Depending quite where in the south-west you are, there could well be a member or 2 nearby who might be keen to pass by and take a look or offer advice / assistance, if you wanted some.

I'm near plymouth. I got the new battery and plugs in today. I have pretty much narrowed the issue down to a clogged cat or failing fuel pump. I stalled out at the lights by simply putting my foot on the accelerator, the revs pick up very slowly at the best of times which leads me to believe it's the cat. It smells incredibly hot as well (if that makes sense). I'll have to invest in a breaker bar to get the cat off. Does anyone know what size the bolts are? Thanks again for your help

Welcome to the club, don't forget to post up some pics at some point. I used to live in and around Plymouth, crownhill, then Saltash, Plymstock, it's a lovely part of the world.

Yeah it is lovely around here to be honest. I'm basically on the outskirts of dartmoor so plenty of nice roads to drive on.
So just been out plugged my scanner in when cold, took the car for a drive long enough to warm it up properly and checked, there is zero faults which I guess is a good sign. Definitely seems to be pointing towards the cat with the lack of low down power and non hot starts. There was a video someone posted on youtube and his symptoms were exactly the same which turned out to be the cat so I will get that off asap.

That looks great, someone on here has some Prodrive wheels for sale which would look lovely. You can go ghetto decat if you are just problem finding, remove the cat and basically smash the gubbins out of it, refit if you still have the same problem then it isn't that!

Only problem there is if the contents are still intact it's worth quite a bit in scrap if you knock it out the contents are worthless Image perhaps get a decat or getto decat

Those symptoms aren't consistent with cat problem.

Collapsed cat doesn't impact starting or low down power.

What a blocking cat does is restrict exhaust gas flow at high revs, so little difference at low revs but engine just won't rev out.

I suppose the easiest way to find out would be to drop the cat and see if it improves. If it does then I'll gut the cat for now and get a high flow one once my other car sells :) Trial and error is always fun haha.

I'll have a look for those PZ wheels. I think they look smart as hell! The guy I got this from had just got a PZ.

Alright new starter fitted, Z1 version. Looks like the 'upgraded' starter the previous owner put on was an ebay special. Took the car for a hard run through 1st 2nd and 3rd after it warmed up and it actually restarted when I got it back home so that is a plus. Now just to narrow down that lack of low end torque. There's definitely some pops and bangs out of the exhaust which isn't supposed to happen with a healthy cat so that is next to check on the list I think. Thank you all again for your kindness and help.

Coils off today, no branding on them or the leads. I've ordered a set of stock mazda coils and some NGK leads. Not sure what brand those d585s were but I would hazard a guess that they came from china.

if its had d585s check it hasnt been mapped for them, the longer dwell will murder standard coils.

Thanks for the reply. In the history it only shows that they were fitted, nothing about a map for them. They've been on for 28k.

Where from?

Lot's of fakes sold as "OEM"/"Stock"/"Genuine" Mazda coils
viewtopic.php?f=58&t=51334

NGK is also near the top of the fakery list

I know the coils I ordered won't be genuine mazda ones but the leads are NGKs. It's more a process of elimination. From ebay but I have used the seller before, they let me buy and return a full ignition kit to test my old 8. Not many sellers would allow that
