Oh and send them coils back to the seller as faulty goods, especially if they are from ebay, as you will get a full refund :)

Either Rotary Ryan coils on here or Mazda rotary parts are the only sellers of good coils. Both not cheap :)
You will need new leads if you go Rotary Ryan tho as they're not man enough for the power

That looks just like the type I pulled of mine when I bought it. If you've not used and can send the NGK coils back do so and get some RRP coils or Rev C

As I'm sure others will agree coils should be either RRP coils, rev c or d585s (number maybe off someone please correct me). Anything else is a roadside emergency swap to get you home only at best.

I wasted a few hundred pounds buying HAAS coils to get what look the same as yours off the car when I bought it. I then realised my mistake to late and got a set of Rev C's

Don’t put the NGK coils on or you will have the same problem again very quickly :( Use Mazda Rev C coils available from Mazdarotaryparts or better still get some Ryan Rotary coils.

My iPad only showed half the posts :-k I see now everyone else has said the same thing :thumright:

I have a set of low mileage Rev C coils I'd be willing to part with if you can't manage to pay out for RRP coils. They're all in good condition with less than a few thousand miles on them as they came off another members track car. Just drop me a message if you're interested.

The likelihood is that the coils are not genuine NGK.. they are notorious for being faked there was a clue about the pics on the boxes, but I cannot remember what.. first rule with a rotary.. buy the best replacement parts you can, don't skimp and if you cannot tell genuine parts then certainly don't buy off eBay :(
Always ask for recommendations, don't just jump loads of expertise on this club forum and excellent Traders too :thumleft:

replaced engine coils, Leads and plugs. I fitted an aftermarket exhaust and air intake
OK, great advice from everyone to date =D>

So, get some decent coils; as advised Mazda OEM Rev C from a reputable supplier, or Ryan Rotary Performance (RRP) coils.

I suggest switching on the ignition with that connector disconnected and a new 15A engine fuse installed. See if the fuse blows. If not, it's most likely a "fake" coil that is the source of the short, which is most likely, based on the pics you posted. Your loom ought to be OK, and the fuse should have prevented damage to other components. Splice in a new (or good used) connector and hopefully OK with fresh, good coils.

BUT, it does leave the question of the leads and spark plugs you bought? Are you certain these are genuine and up to the job? Where did you source them? There are lots of fake plugs on eBay.

AND, what "air intake" did you fit? I hope is wasn't a K&N Typhoon, as they cause many problems and you are better off going back to the stock intake.

This forum has 15+ years of experience of RX-8 issues, and one thing that's loud and clear is that skimping on ignition parts is most definitely a false economy. It can lead to a failed CAT (£££) or even engine failure (£££££). It'll cost a bit more, but will save you a potential engine rebuild!
