Another new member - Prospective owner !

Post by Angvl »

Hello to the fellow rotary fans!

Nice to be a part of your community, being a Mazda sportcars enthusiast for years.
I have owned all MX5 generations and nowadays I have a track oriented JDM import MK2 RS and a daily 2016 MK4 MX5 1.5 Icon :)

One of my best friends has been having an RX8 for years and that way I know them well, both the good and bad way ;)

I have decided that is time to be a rotary owner myself, in the form of a very good RX8 example, which I'm in the process of finding.
I have been searching for a couple of weeks, not that impressed from many out there, to tick all my boxes.
Ideally I am looking for a greatly preserved and maintained RX8, regardless of version/model. Looking for top condition both mechanically (engine maintainance with all the typical consumables that go wrong) and chassis/body-wise. Especially rust is a deal-breaker for me.
It probably sounds like I ask for too much, but really I prefer to pay more than average to get a properly good example than get a cheap and having to do both engine rebuild and rust repairs.

The plan to is to sell the daily 2016 Mx5 and then get an RX8 and share duties with the track-day Mk2 MX5. I will be soon moving closer to work with a short commute, so I can share the yearly mileage between the new RX8 and the track MX5, so it won't be horrendous in running costs.
Another plus, is that instead of 2x 2-seaters that I have now with minimal practicality, at least then I will have the opportunity to go somewhere with 3 more people at the same time

So, I joined you to learn even more details than the ones I know about the special good and tricky things about owning an RX8 and also take my chances on what cars forum members would potentially have to sale.

Also, as I have already put up my 2016 MX5 up for sale, would be an ideal situation if someone would be interested for a swap + price difference!
I had bought this new generation Mx5 with plans to keep it for long and invested on it, as I normally do with all my cars. I did a full 5 stage Dinitrol underseal rust protection and upgraded to 2 liter front brakes as well. However, for personal reasons, on the relatively near future, I would prefer to have one car with 4 seats capability and still be an interesting to drive one, so RX8 is the top candidate!
If there is interest, I can share more info and material regarding my MX5 that's for sale.

Nice to meet you, then 8)

Hi and :welcome: Angvl. :D Finding one with no rust is definitely the way to go - I wouldn't make needing an engine rebuild a deal breaker personally ... as long as the price for the car was right. A rebuild from a trusted specialist (we can point you in the right directions for that) would be about £2k-£3k so in an otherwise solid car your total outlay would probably be less than £4k.

Have you seen our Buyers Guide, just in case there are things you weren't already aware of? viewtopic.php?f=25&t=24047

If/when you do get one be sure to consider joining the club, we have a whole lot more info and useful stuff etc in the members' areas of the forum.

Welcome! Lots of current and past MX5 owners here (like myself).

Be sure to read all of the buyers guide that Shagrington linked to, it's all helpful stuff.

Your priorities sound wise and there are some immaculate RX8s out there, mine was when I bought it. But it may mean being willing to travel long distances to view cars and patience as the available cars on the market cycles. These cars reflect the effort that you put into them both before and after purchase.

Best of luck.

Welcome! You couldn't have found a better place to get advice and help than here.

There are normally people putting their cars up for sale semi regularly, so you may get lucky and find 'the one', but I think one of the things you should always go and do is take a look around at what's out there currently. Go drive a few and get a feel for what's good and what isn't, learn where to loo for signs of issues, and your job will get much easier.

If you have to choose between good chassis or good engine, for your own sakes, go good chassis. There are normally engines for sale regularly on here that are ok, and a full rebuild is probably not going to cost as much as rust repair (and you know the problem is fixed at the end of it!)
