Hi all, newbie here

Post by cjwinty »

Just purchased a non-running RX8 (Misfire and real rough running) as a second car. Used to be a mechanic 20 years ago so wanted to play with my spanners again.

Could be a potential bargain, good luck in tracing the fault and look forward to hearing more about the remedy.

Welcome!

You're probably already aware that the ignition system on the 8 is of vital importance - if you don't know when the coils were last changed or their history, best to replace them with something reliable (either Mazda revision C or Ryan Rotary) - cheap eBay knockoffs will soon block your cat and lead to an engine rebuild....

Good luck with the car!

Could be a whole raft of different causes;
- poor connection on Eccentric Shaft Sensor
- dirty MAF viewtopic.php?f=25&t=36391
- failed ignition components viewtopic.php?f=25&t=36282
- blocked fuel pump or even just old fuel
- loose battery connection or corroded earth

Hi and :welcome: cjwinty :D It doesn't look bad at all so hopefully it will be something easily fixed causing the misfire and rough running ( :whathesaid: ....and my money is on the coils/ignition being at least a part of the problem).

First thing I have done is to take all the plugs out (all wrong, all RE8C-L) so they will be going, tested resistance on all leads and they are in service limits.

Coils!!! not firing on rotor 1 leading and rotor 2 trailing (Used timing light and measured resistance as per w/s manual)

Also managed to get a spare engine thrown in when I got the car, the car dealer I purchased from obviously not knowing what they were doing with a rotary just swapped the engine to try and resolve misfire!

MAF cleaned and airbox cleaned of old grease like oil.

Any suggestions on what rotary specialist to get parts from? Been researching a few but would be nice to get input from other owners.

I'm in Farnham Surrey.

Thank everyone :)

:whathesaid: usually the first place I look, but also not too far away are Essex Rotary and The Performance Shop and I happily use any/all of them. Luke Murdoch may have parts, but he is more of a mobile services than parts for sale I think. Further away but also very good are Ryan Rotary Performance and Rotary Revs and Boston Rotary of course.
Other specialists on the list in the FAQs I haven't used personally but should all be good.

UPDATE: Car runs like a gem, all the problem was is that someone wired up the injectors incorrectly and left one unplugged!!!

Glad to hear it was something simple and you got it sorted - those are healthy numbers! I have been to SRR too and posted results on my thread in case you want to compare like for like, but the power/torque curves look very similar to me! Did you stick with the OEM coils in the end or go for the upgraded RRP ones? Both are fine, but the RRP ones definitely improved my car.

If you haven't already, I'd also get a compression test done. They don't have to be expensive, but it'd give you a decent idea of what condition the seals are in and allow you to plan next steps.

There are a good number of Surrey area owners, and I'm sure one of them would be happy to help point you in the right direction of you need it. Best of luck with it.
