Finally got my rx8

Post by Finalboss »

Well after months and months of searching I have put a deposit down on a really nice sparkling black r3 which I collect in January, this has just had a full rebuild including housings at the performance shop, so should hopefully be good for years to come! It has pz mirrors and the D585 coil conversion but is otherwise stock. Im assuming this may be an ex members car due to the mirrors and coils?

I used to run a company importing japanese cars and rare parts so have been collecting bits and pieces over the last few months that will help complete the car! I have a racing beat dual resonated decat, racing beat oil cooler screens, uprated rear light gaskets, mazdaspeed rotar oil filler cap, jdm mazda optional starter button, jdm mazda optional footwell lights and an odula front lip from Japan.

I also plan on getting a nice exhaust for it, I want the loudest exhaust possible without drone, im tempted by something like an odula rs spec exhaust but I cant imagine to many people here run them, so I dont know if my best bet would be a pettit racing

Well done in getting, what appears to be, a great car.

There might be some issues with your planned mods

Are the gaskets for the R3 or S1 lights?
The oil filler is likely to be S1 and may not fit with the R3 engine cover.
JDM cars have virtually no security, unlike ours which have Thatcham Approved alarm/immobiliser. Fitting a JDM starter button without compromising the security is going to be a challenge, and your insurance company might not be happy.

I love the look of the PZ mirrors, which are way better than the elephant ears fitted to the later R3s, but you may struggle to see what's going on, especially motorway lane changes etc.

Hi the gaskets are for r3, not 100% on the filler cap we will need to see! I will be able to fit the jdm starter and run it through the alarm no doubt. I did worry about this with the PZ mirrors are they quite bad? Did the r3s have different mirrors to the s2?

I have the PZ mirrors and whilst they are a nuisance on the odd occasion (Parking is a bother sometimes) they are still not the worst side mirrors I've used. And they're handsome enough to get away with it. ;)

Will take a photo of what I can see from them tomorrow to give you an example if you'd like.

Congrats on finding a good one! Also be aware that with the D585's if you decide to switch ignition systems or have any tubing done, you will need to have the car remapped at the same time/make sure the D585 map is not removed at the same time, as the D585's require a rejigged map to work correctly.

Nice looking R3 although black is not my colour she's still sweet looking 8) I like the PZ mirrors,as Dave said they are far better than those big fat yolks on the later R3's.

I have an early R3 so I avoided those. On the subject of exhausts,I have a Miltek/Pettit on mine with a gutted cat and it's lovely. It doesn't drone on the motorway and is nice and throaty when you're " on it " It pops and bangs nicely too and with those 4" tips cut at an angle for me its the best looking system for the R3.The tips fit the housing perfectly too so for me it just looks right :D

On the subject of the exhaust shrouds/housing expect to see them a bit scorched after a period of time  A heat gun or some back to black will have them looking mint again...for a while

Just to add, regarding the coils I'd go for Ryan Rotary Performance ones.I have the 585's on mine from Rotary Revs but one or more of them failed recentky and although Ben very kindly sent me a new set FOC the RRP ones are the ones to go for

Ah ok so am I as well binning off the 585s? Slightly annoying as I assumed these were an upgrade! How many miles do you get from them usually?

The 585s are a good upgrade still so don’t bin them if working. RRP are generally regarded as the one to go for if/when you do change the coils though

Hi

Yeah, don't panic! Don't take those comments as a detraction on the 585's - they're a better system than stock allegedly (I have no personal experience of that), but things have moved on since they were the de jour coil of choice. Stick with then if you have them, but if they snuff it it might be worth considering going for the RRP set as others have mentioned. I doubt your 585's will be covered by warranty as the car's changed ownership.

TBF, the OEM coils are still considered good, they just roast themselves to death sooner than either the 585's or the more recent RRP option.

Just to clarify, I had zero issues with the 585's for over 60K miles then one or more started to give up the ghost so I had a new set FOC from Ben but as Ben doesn't stock them anymore the RRP are the ones to go for now unless of course you want to opt for the Mazda coils but compared to the RRP coils personally I'd opt for the RRP ones

If you use the RRP coils most use the better Magnecor leads and as the lead connectors are the same as the OE Mazda leads you can also re-fit OE coils if you need to, D585 coils use different leads.

Just remember that if you have 585 coils and the ecu has been mini mapped to suit, the map would need to be removed to put oem or Ryan rotary coils on, or else you will fry them
