New owner
Bought my first rotary on Friday, a 2005 rx8 192 5 speed manual in Titanium grey.
Engine seems good, no hot starting issues but a little lumpy at idle, is this normal?.
Bodywork is good, but the bonnet has some large stonechips, have a lead on a better replacement locally.
My intention long term is to transplant the lexus 1uz vvti that's sat in my garage into this. I realise that may upset some forum members.
Am I right in thinking my diff ratio is 4.44:1, and the automatic should have a 4.3:1?. The taller the diff the better for the v8, the original diff in the lexus was around 3.6:1.

The RX8 has a 'lumpy' idle, which is normal..there are two big triangular chunks of metal lazily spinning at about 250RPM in the motor, which is the reason

to be honest, i and many others would prefer you to engine swap a already dead car, seems a waste to rip out a good engine,
having said that, good luck!

Had a good read of that beforehand, my 2005 has the clear washer bottle for some reason.SeeJay wrote:

It has a few rough edges, but for the little money I have in it that's to be expected.

Re: New owner
A very lumpy idle can often be cleared by resetting the PCM or cleaning the MAF. Might be worth checking the air filter as well to check there hasn't been an oil burp.
But if you're engine swapping it you may not be too bothered about it...

So.. you bought a rotary to turn it into something else, good luck with that!
The amount of people who have tried to do a transplant and complete the project is, as far as I recollect ..ZERO, there was always something that beat them at least known to this forum

Re: New owner
Not sure, I think there may have been one or two (and I don't mean some or several) completed it ... I don't think they're on here though. One of the issues is that the RX-8 was designed around the engine so getting anything else to fit properly means a lot of extra cutting and welding and then there are probably other things need doing that complicate matters even more. We have had some people here who have started and then an advert appeared on eBay saying "Unfinished project, ran out of time but I have all the bits you'll need to complete it".
But I'm talking from a position of ignorance and no skills or knowledge so what I say about a conversion can be taken with a large pinch of salt.

Re: New owner
The plan I have in my head is different to the method I've seen others employ, it requires more fab work to the engine and gearbox I'll be using and less modification to the car itself.
We'll see how it pans out.

Re: New owner
Welcome. I have seen a couple of transplanted RX8 around. Ebay has one for sale at the moment with a turbo to top it off. If you do the work, make sure you put up a build thread.

Re: New owner
Hi Scotty,
yes I've seen the turbo v8 on ebay.
I don't intend to turbocharge mine, I'll be using the later 1uz vvti lexus v8, it has more torque and power stock than the earlier model. Plus I want the car to be usable as a regular driver.
I also want to have a manual gearbox, I don't feel the smooth luxury auto box would work very well with the design of the car. It's a lot more work but I think it's worth it.
There will be a build thread.
I'm in Ashton under Lyne, east of Manchester.

Re: New owner
Finally finished the engine swap, took longer than expected with covid 19 and the fact that both myself and my Mrs have been working all throughout lockdown.
Unfortunately the build thread never happened, I do have photo's of most of the steps. I'll start another thread on the subject if anyone is interested?.
I've been driving around in it for the last 6 weeks, ironed out most of the small issues and it's turned out mostly as I'd expected it to be.
The gearing is a bit short, but I have a plan to get that fixed.
All in, the project took 3 and a half months from the time I pulled the renesis to the day I first drove the v8. Not too bad considering I had no assistance.

I had thought about something similar in my track car but the front end would be way too heavy for yen card balance

Re: New owner
To be honest there's only 40kg extra weight with the 1uz vvti, mostly down to the alloy block. I can safely say that I've noticed minimal change in handling, even the ride height looks good on the stock suspension. what did you use for the transmission and ECU control ?
did you manage to integrate the original dash?

Re: New owner
The v8 is attached to the standard 5 speed rx8 gearbox.350matt wrote:nice work

I had to use an automatic gearbox emulator to fool the lexus ecu into thinking the auto box is still there, otherwise the ecu will fully retard the cam timing and disable the avis variable inlet runners.
The standard rx8 instrument cluster is still in place and reads correctly, although the traction control and abs lights are on, abs works but as it doesn't see the engine ecu it throws a code. I've already been working on a solution for the warning lamps.
