New member has landed

Post by Ross911 »

Good day everyone

Im a new RX8 owner and have fallen into ownership really.
To cut a very long story short a friend has a car garage and said he had taken in this Mazda as PX . He didnt think it would sell on again for much so i went to look at it and found a completely wrapped RX -8 , 50,000 miles , in matt black . It looked horrendous . All the lights were painted black , it looked so bad he was considering sand racing it .

I bought it for £450 .

I went home and with the help of another friend we peeled off the matt black wrap and uncovered its blue paint after 8 years . It started to look nice . The blue was near perfect

I was in two minds what to do with this car , but since driving it i ended up loving it .theres just something about the way it feels and drives ; this one has a good history file but ive no idea what model it is so ive guessed it when i registered on here, until i find out. Sorry about that .

I live in jersey so all i can say is that its a 2004 model 6 speed manual . Our log books dont give all the info sadly

I now want to look after the car and im glad ive ‘rescued’it to be honest .

In summary i’ve never had so much fun in a car for the money, and ive got all sorts of cars.

Im hoping to learn about them and use this knowledge to make mine even nicer , and gain a few contacts along the way

First question i have and one you’ve all been asked a hundred times; is my engine going to die after 60,000 miles or is that a myth ? Everyone is saying steer clear but im not giving up on it

Anyway , nice to join up 😂

Welcome aboard :thumright:

Your car is a 231 variant, most likely Stormy Blue, but could be Strato Blue.. we need pics ;)

Congrats on the cheap purchase, the first thing to do is get it compression tested. If you amend your profile to indicate your location - sorry to pinch your usual advice,John  - we can advise on a suitable specialist to carry out the test ;)

In the meantime, take a look at the Buyer's Guide, even tho' you've already parted with your money,it's still essential reading:

Hi and :welcome: Ross911. :D Strato blue is dark and almost mauve in sunlight, if it is a bright blue it will be winning blue - there are a lot more of them than there are strato blue.

I suspect you won't find a rotary specialist on Jersey to do a compression test for you. ;) The tales of them needing a rebuild at 60k miles is a myth ... OK it does happen but if it has been treated/driven properly there is no reason why it wouldn't go on perfectly well for twice that. Read this for better info on longevity https://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/v ... 25&t=36004
Easiest way to get at least a rough idea of how healthy it is is to do a hot start test. Get it up to temperature with a good, spirited run (as much as that is possible on Jersey). Park up and switch off. Leave it 5-10 minutes - how easy/quick does it start up? If it takes no more than a couple of seconds the signs are good. If you have to allow it 20 more minutes to cool down before it will start the chances are it is dying.

Most important thing is to have a good ignition system. If there is no evidence of the coils (and leads) having been changed recently make that your first job - and if they were changed where did the replacements come from. Coils must come from a trusted source (eg Mazda Rotary Parts or one of the specialists you'll find listed in the FAQ section). Cheap coils or pattern parts will not cope with the heat etc and will quickly kill the Cat and then the car. Read this https://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/v ... 25&t=36282

Have a good read through whatever in the FAQ section you didn't already read :study: and then (and just ignore me if you know all this already) here are my best tips for keeping it all running sweetly:

1. To start up turn the key to position 2, wait for most of the lights on the dash to go out (I watch the airbag light by the glove box), press the clutch to the floor (optional, but reduces drag), turn the key to start and do not touch the throttle until it has started. You can drive off straight away, just keep the revs down for a bit (see #4 below).

2. Never [-X turn off the engine before it has reached at least somewhere towards normal operating temperature (should only take a minute or two, but best to go for a short drive if just swapping cars round on the drive etc). Switching off cold risks flooding, which is a real :censored: with a rotary engine. Mazda recommend rev to 4k and hold it for 8-10 seconds switching off while still revving if you have no option but to switch off cold (it is not necessary to do this in any other circumstance).

3. Check the oil level regularly (use the dipstick - the oil gauge tells you nothing other than that you have or don't have pressure) and top up if necessary with semi synthetic 5w30 (most people and specialists are advising to use 10w40 now though) ... small amounts at a time, no more than ½ a litre then check the level again before adding more as you don't want to overfill it.

4. Use all the revs once the engine is nice and warm (don't sit idling to warm up, start up and drive but keep it below about 4k until the needle on the water temperature gauge is pointing straight up, then give it another 10 minutes for the oil to warm up too before really thrashing it  ) and hit the beep often. Best acceleration is from 4k revs up - to pull away you really need to rev to 2k - you can let the revs drop after lifting the clutch if you are in traffic, cruising steadily at 3½k revs and changing down to go up hills or accelerate gets you the best mpg ... which still won't be great. ;)
I suspect you'll be in 2nd or 3rd gear nearly all the time if the roads in Jersey are the same as when I visited there about 35 years ago. That's OK, they're good gears.

5. Join the club for discounts on all sorts of things (you will very quickly get the cost of membership back - and then some), loads more info in the members only sections (including access to all the workshop and technical manuals), local meets (obviously not on Jersey, but maybe if you do bring the car over on the ferry once in a while and then if you can't find one exactly local it is a good excuse for a drive if you come to one a bit further away), a sexy keyring just for joining and more. :thumright:

Thank you for the welcome . Im going to get some pictures today and post them up . It was also good reading about general operating , i didnt know any of that and i will follow those points from now on - thank you . First job today is a hot start test . It was also interesting to read that you encourage using all the revs . The misconception from me was that by taking it easy it somehow is looking after the engine more 🤦🏻‍♂️ If theres no rotary specialist here , is a mazda main dealer an option ?

Welcome! I'd be amazed if there are many 8's on the channel islands, so you're going to be in a very unique club!

Because of that there are going to be some issues when it comes to garages/dealers. Whilst Main Dealer is an option, there are some real horror stories out there of people taking their cars into proper Mazda main Dealers and getting a ruined wreck back. If you have a poke through the forum I'm sure you'll come across a few. Tbh a good local garage (like your friend!) is probably better. That said, there may be some recalls pending on your car (I literally have no idea how different Channel Island laws would be when it comes to recalls) so you might have to take it to a main dealer anyway.

The whole 'RX8's die after 60k' thing is most definitely an exaggeration. When first released it seems that there wasn't enough information given to new owners (like waiting for it to warm up properly, and then giving it all the beans when it has) that had a detrimental effect. The good news is that if your engine is OK, there are loads of really easy ways to keep it that way. And if it isn't... Well the car was £450 so it could be worse!

I'd watch out for the Catalytic converter (does it glow after taking it for a spirited drive?) as these can get blocked and stop the engine breathing, and hot starts/your ignition system as mentioned above.

Tbh, the first immediate things I would do if I bought another would be;

1. Clean the MAF (mass airflow sensor just outside the airbox) and give the car a PCM reset
2. Dump a bottle of cataclean in it on a quarter tank and really give it all the beans to remove some of the carbon deposits that might have built up.

Both of these things are super cheap and easy and can really help the engine.

I would definitely recommend the price of membership if you are a brand new owner - there's so much information in the Members section that is incredibly useful for first time owners (me included!) in particular, and you get access to group buys and discounts on various bits and bobs which often saves you more than the full cost of membership over the year.

Plus, living in Jersey, the discounts might cover the cost of shipping

Hi and thanks for the reply ! The strange thing is that its been years since ive seen another RX-8 and my friend who owns the garage has a silver one out the back that has a problem and i saw a red one yesterday ! Funny that .

Ill get to work on those things youve mentioned and again , thank you for the very helpful tips

I will get some pics today , the car has been modified slightly by the previous owner , it doesnt look terrible but on the plus side i do have all the original parts to put back on and a stainless steel exhaust is there too . I did notice the engine warning light was on and it sounds like the exhaust is blowing . Thats the only two issues i can visibly see right now . Everything else works fine and actually the car has been loooked after by the looks of it , plenty of history in the file and so on .

Are there any local FB groups that you could use to make contact with other RX-8 owners on the island?

It may be that there's a competent independent mechanic that some of the others have found, that we don't know about.
Islands can be like that.

If you PM me your VIN I should be able to confirm if there are any recalls outstanding, though you would have to use a mazda franchised dealer for those.
