Finally got me an RX8
Hi everyone,
Finally got myself an Rx8 (R3 version) after wanting one for many years!
86k miles but had low 7 compression results and full mazda service history (which I dont think is that bad... )
Finding it quite hard to find much on the R3's. Was looking for front fog light as it's cracked but not many scrap ones about.
Also does anyone know if they're all supposed to have reversing sensors..? It looks like its got them on the rear bumper but nothings ever come on...
Starting to realise people weren't joking about the fuel consumption!

Re: Finally got me an RX8
Lovely looking car. My R3 had reverse sensors, they should 'beep'. I'd get rid of the fog lights and replace them with the DRL mod that Dr. FrankenRex has done. It looks OEM and then you have DRLs which makes it look more modern

Re: Finally got me an RX8
I do like the DRL's but as they're custom I imagine they'll be out of my price range.
Re the sensors - Doesn't mention anything in the manual about them and nothing in the settings on the radio so maybe i've just got the holes for sensors to be fitted...?

Sounds like aftermarket or dealer-fitted option for the reversing sensors.

Re: Finally got me an RX8
Hi and Alexpb2401. Thanks for joining the club already too.
Have a good read through whatever in the FAQ section you didn't already read and then (and just ignore me if you know all this already) here are my best tips for keeping it all running sweetly:
1. To start up turn the key to position 2, wait for most of the lights on the dash to go out (I watch the airbag light by the glove box), press the clutch to the floor (optional, but reduces drag), turn the key to start and do not touch the throttle until it has started. You can drive off straight away, just keep the revs down for a bit (see #4 below).
2. Never turn off the engine before it has reached at least somewhere towards normal operating temperature (should only take a minute or two, but best to go for a short drive if just swapping cars round on the drive etc). Switching off cold risks flooding, which is a real with a rotary engine. Mazda recommend rev to 4k and hold it for 8-10 seconds switching off while still revving if you have no option but to switch off cold (it is not necessary to do this in any other circumstance).
3. Check the oil level regularly (use the dipstick - the oil gauge tells you nothing other than that you have or don't have pressure) and top up if necessary with semi synthetic 5w30 (most people and specialists are advising to use 10w40 now though) ... small amounts at a time, no more than ½ a litre then check the level again before adding more as you don't want to overfill it.
4. Use all the revs once the engine is nice and warm (don't sit idling to warm up, start up and drive but keep it below about 4k until the needle on the water temperature gauge is pointing straight up, then give it another 10 minutes for the oil to warm up too before really thrashing it - with the R3 you do have a red line that rises with the coolant temperature as indicated by the lights on the dash but this is still good advice) and hit the beep often. Best acceleration is from 4k revs up - to pull away you really need to rev to 2k - you can let the revs drop after lifting the clutch if you are in traffic, cruising steadily at 3½k revs and changing down to go up hills or accelerate gets you the best mpg ... which still won't be great.
I would normally add a 5th tip saying to join the club, but you already did that.

Re: Finally got me an RX8
It’s nearside I need
Thanks for all the tips, thankfully to guy at Kent Rotaries gave me a tip sheet when I bought it. There we some R3s a lot closer to home but after speaking to the garages they seemed pretty clueless so thought it’d be better having a higher mileage one that I known had been looked after properly
Going to use the 10W40 semi synthetic oil.
Are we all of the opinion that premium fuel is best?
Found it amusing how convoluted the pairing process was for Bluetooth

Car looks really nice btw, I did see that car when it was going through the auction, Alu Silver is a colour that has really grown on me.

Yeah reversing sensors were not standard. Mine doesn't have them. Which is fine... because I know how to use my mirrors
Congrats on your purchase Alex. Looks ace!

Nope. I'm not. Some people stick premium in because they think it runs a bit smoother. I've not seen much evidence of that.

Having seen many such "Tip Sheets" produced by dealers and others, it's a relief to see that that one is all good advice and makes sense.

Re: Finally got me an RX8
Looks like a fairly reasonably put together tip sheet, couple of notes to add, if the red "coliseum" light does come on, check your coolant level before ignoring, if it comes on and level is fine you can unplug the sensor with no ill effect, just check coolant regularly, other note is don't over fill your oil (keep it between 1/2 and 3/4 on dipstick) if you do overfill you can get an "oil burp" that can cause a lot of smoke and poor running due to the maf getting contaminated

Re: Finally got me an RX8
You can run the R3 with oil at the full mark on the dipstick - the revised breather system pretty much makes oil burps non-existent on the later cars..

Surprisingly so, they aren't *that* expensive as they use off-the-shelf bits, including some Mazda trim parts that weren't UK spec.Alexpb2401 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 5:10 pmI do like the DRL's but as they're custom I imagine they'll be out of my price range.
If you wander in to your local Mazda dealer and order yourself one of each of these:
F189-50-C11B
F189-50-C21C
(not sure how much they are, but not too much) and then get yourself some OSRAM LEDDRL102s.
A little bit of dremel work and you're golden

Those parts are listed @ £33.66 each plus VAT, total £80.78 retail from a UK dealer.
They're in the specification for Australian cars, so you might find a cheaper source there, even with shipping, but you will (could) get caught for import duties.
