RX8 Insurance
RX8 Insurance
Hi guys,
My name is Jack I'm 17 and very interested in getting a RX8 in the next couple months or so. I've recently been looking into insurance policies on comparison websites and its still a very high 8000 pounds, so my question is are there any special / one off insurance companies that will insure my on my soon to be RX8.
Thanks in advance!
Jack

Hi Jack and welcome to the forum,
That is indeed a high price which is designed to put you off using those companies.
Yes you should try specialist companies like Adrian Flux, Compitition Car insurance etc
Let us know
Regards
Pete

Re: RX8 Insurance
Rx8 as first car is a struggle if you are not mechanical minded.
Plus isn't the best shortcoming car imo.
Also ignition can cost you 400 to 500 ( leads coils sparkplug)
If you want to change exhaust from 200 to 1k or more decat and cat back etc
Oil is good to be changed every 3k miles.
And much much more is so many bolt on upgrades that are so tempting. My first car was opel tigra 99 plate then I had 3x mazda 6 and still have one mazda 6 that I daily and rex toy that just cost and spend more time doing stuff on it, than driving

Re: RX8 Insurance
I’m not suprised your getting quote that high to be honest. Insurance company’s just don’t want young people driving performance cars.
Probably for good reason. My first real performance car was an r5 turbo and I paid 4K a year third party when I was 18-19. That was 18 years ago now. I lived at home and had money to burn though

This car is not for you if those quotes are anything to go by, as stated the running costs and correct maintenance will likely bankrupt you

Re: RX8 Insurance
'Not for you' - right now Jack. Stick a photo of one on your wall/desktop and build up your no claims discount in a cheapy hatchback while you save your cash for a decent RX8... not a cheap one. Most of us have had to do our time in slower cars while young, instead of jumping right into a sports car. Then get one in 5-10 years when insurance will be affordable. I promise you'll appreciate it more if you wait for it too. You can always join us on track days as a passenger and social events while you wait.
Unless you're a self-made millionaire and don't need to wait. It which case: Adrian Flux, A-Plan and Quotemehappy are good bets.

Re: RX8 Insurance
Glad to see you posted Jack.
We've had many owners over the years that were 17 or 18, some of them went on to rebuild their own engines in no time..
It's about the individual, not the age imo, much of owning the RX-8 is slightly less costly than it was, and if you do your research properly, be sensible and can afford to do it, then why not.

Re: RX8 Insurance
Welcome to the forum Jack,
I was a teenager when I came across the RX2. My brother and I rebuilt the engine using a good old Hanes manual we photocopied from the local library.
That was my first experience and became addicted to rotary engines. By the age of 21 I'd gone through an FC (Series 4) and then FD. The insurance was horrendous then but I didn't care. My wallet certainly did but I was willing to plumb it into something I enjoyed.
As brix said. It's up to the individual. If you're willing to give it a shot then go for it!
You'll get a ton of info here from past and current members, not to forget the valuable info gathered and posted over the years.
Regarding the insurance quotes, I'd personally take a look at some of the insurance companies here in the forum. They might be able to give you better quotes than the one you got.
Best of luck

Re: RX8 Insurance
Back in the '70s, my first car was an Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce, which was a direct competitor to the E-type Jag.
When I started looking for insurance I thought the brokers were giving me alternative phone numbers to call, only that was the annual premium.
One company did offer a quote that I could just about afford, until I realised that was the monthly, rather than annual charge
Long story short, I still have that car and I don't regret it.
All that aside, you need to consider the total running costs, including draconian road tax (if after 2006), plus all the parts you'll need to replace (coils, tyres, etc) unless you pay a lot more for a sorted car, and that's without keeping the tank topped-up with fuel.
The purchase price could be less than 30% of the first years ownership cost.

Re: RX8 Insurance
Hi and Jack. I can't add much more than agreeing to most of what has been said above already. My first car was a tatty old Minivan with a window conversion and rust ... lots of rust - the insurance premium for my first year was £35. Times have changed since then it seems.
Bear in mind that in order for someone of your age to get insured many insurers will insist on you having one of those awful black boxes that records everything you do and they may increase your premium if it tells them you go over the speed limit or accelerate/brake too hard. Your post code will also have a bearing on what you end up paying - where in the country are you? It may be worth asking some of our younger members where they got their insurance, whether it is affordable and if they have done anything to help with getting their premium down (I'm sure there was someone in the Essex Meet thread (look for 'Social Meets') that says in their signature they are only 18 and the RX-8 is their first car).

Re: RX8 Insurance
Not at 17, unless you're going to be selling organs to insure it. Wait until you have a years no claims before taking the plunge. Also be prepared for 20mpg and regular oil top ups. Also don't forget that rear wheel drive cars will behave differently to your 1.0 Ecoboost Fiesta learner car, which is essentially driving in cheat mode. If you have the money and can keep your cool and not give into friends saying "DO A SKID", then go for it, but don't expect much money left for much else...

Re: RX8 Insurance
Forget about an 8 for a while, aside from the insurance they can be ruiniously expensive to run and maintain ( assuming you'll maintain it well ) Fuel costs are horrendous especially if you plan on using it as a daily.
Why not go for an MX5? Brilliant little sports car that would not be anywhere near as expensive to run an maintain. An annual service would suffice.I don't know how you'd fare with insurance on a 5 but surely well worth looking in to....

Re: RX8 Insurance
I did A LOT of research into it and unless you have a years no claims you can't really step outside the <1.4 sh*tbox class without insurance companies resizing your rectum with their massive premiums. You MIGHT be lucky to find something out of pure luck, but anything rear drive (MX5, RX8, IS200, MR2) is usually a no-no
Well except an Air cooled Beetle

Re: RX8 Insurance
My youngest lad now has 2 years no claims bonus and clean licence. That has allowed him to look for car a bit more pokey than his Mazda2. He wanted to buy our R3 but as he is not into maintenance it is not really suited.
He had an insurance quote of £1,100 which I didn’t think was bad.
He ended up with a msport s2.0i Z4 with the insurance cost about the same as the R3.
Just shows those extra couple of years make a big difference.

Re: RX8 Insurance
The RX8 would make a good first car as got decent driver aids and feedback plus is practical with the legroom in the rear and the size of the boot and most of all feels fun at relatively slow speeds due to the low seating position so less likely to get speeding points.
Best bet would be go get a 2003/4 S1 as they are 15 years old and will fall into the classic car bracket (ncb doesn't matter) so will be a lot cheaper.
When I was young my first car was a 1.4 Rover 200 with an MG ZR bodykit which put down 100bhp then the next was a Saab 9000 that had 340bhp and because it was classed as a classic car the insurance was a fraction of that of the Rover even though it was completely insane power wise, nothing stock at that time could touch it on a roll.

Re: RX8 Insurance
I would suggest that at 17, meaning you're a new driver without any no-claims bonus or anything, unless you've found a company that'll accept NCB earned on a moped or something (they are out there) then £800 is a blood bargain.
I see plenty of kids these days struggle to bring in a premium under £1,500 for a poverty spec corsa, clio, yaris or whatever other sub 1 litre euro box you could think of these days.
I'm 32 now, even my first car, a Mazda 323F (1998) 1.5 litre when I was 17 cost me £1,200 for the first year's insurance and that was with pass-plus qualification, which essentially had a benefit in premium akin to that of a years no claims.
If you can get an RX-8 as a first car for £800 a year insurance, have their arm off (assuming you're not fronting the policy in your parents name, or quoting based on still being a learner or something, as the premium will rocket when you set it true).
Disclaimer - always make sure you're open, honest and clear on your insurance policy, no fronting or anything, as if the company finds out you're in for having your policy declared void. If you think insurance is expensive now, try telling them you've had a policy declared void or cancelled before!

Re: RX8 Insurance
Adjusted for inflation that's still only £596.76. I've never had any quotes for under a grand even when looking at 1.0 pieces of automotive celery made in a jungle clearing in Korea. What's happened? Has trust just completely broken down and they don't want people to drive or something?GreySilver Beast wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 11:24 amIt's amazing how many people can't read on here
