Hello! What are the details of the car you are going to see? Some advice and guidance is more applicable to certain cars. A compression test is always a good idea so good that you are getting that sorted.

Horror stories are generally what you only ever hear about, especially down the pub :) Most are crap of course. A well cared for example will put a seriously big smile on your face!

Sounds like it may have the ‘Sport Pack’ if it has the 10-spoke wheels too. £3k is top end but if the car stacks up well and shows good compression it will make a good buy.

Thanks guys for your info, and cheers for the offer big Pete but I,m in central Scotland only just found your location but if you or anyone else knows someone way up here you could recommend it would be appreciated. Of all the pub horror stories you hear the one that will affect me most is a short run I,ve not far to travel to work just a couple o miles and I mean 2 at most so maybe cycle to work n get fit and rx8 fun at the wknds.

Most horror stories start with "my mate's..." typically followed by some relation or acquaintance the story teller has never met reciting some twisted vagary of the real truth.

The rotary if used correctly and maintained properly isn't the doom machine you hear about; yes it will need the rotor tips doing at some point but any sports car is going to hand you some larger maintenance bills periodically.

Way I look at it if you had to do a job like the timing chain on say an Audi S4 I'd find it hard to believe you'll come out with much change vs the rebuild on a 13B, yet the Audi would cost you way more to purchase. Others may have different opinions and different ways of rationalising it in their mind but that's how I see it!

typically with 3k to spend you should be able to source a fully rebuilt, warranted s1 for that.there are members cars for sale on here with known histories at around that figure, rob.

"My Mate" bought a Porsche 991 996 not long after it had been fitted with a re-manufactured engine.
She had to replace the clutch (again) within 5k miles and sold the car when it started having "replacement engine required" symptoms, less than 30k miles later.
She's a careful driver, and her cars are always specialist maintained.
The 996 engines cost £5k-10k a shot to rebuild.
This isn't unusual https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=991282

Her Mini Cooper S also used more oil per mile than an RX8, which she discovered was "normal for this model", plus it had to be expensive fully-synthetic [-X

Hi and :welcome: Finbar1. :) For someone who can do most things including compression tests in Scotland try Ben Taylor in Paisley. Sadly he isn't on the forum any more, but he's a great bloke and you can find him on Facebook at the Minisaki Rotary Lovers Center of Excellence https://www.facebook.com/pages/Minisaki ... 0&fref=tag
