Failed MOT Corroded Sill - & - A good local bodyshop

Post by DWGJ »

Hi, I am new to the site and have arrived with a major problem. My low milegae (40,000) 2004, 231 RX8 has spectacularly failed its MOT, due to corrosion on the nearside and offside front and rear sills.

I have seen one or two posts on the subject and need some help in two areas,

1- Finding a reliable source of new sills that wont break the bank

2- Finding a local garage/bodyshop that can carryout the work. I am based in Peterborough so if anyone out there has a recommendation please let me know.

The cars been off the road for two months now so keen to find a solution, had one silly quote for nearly £3,000, more than the car is worth. I think I can get the body work done for £750 ish, just need some sills.

There's a guy on here called shambo that does sills and what not, not sure if he still does but by all accounts his work is top quality and reasonable. I think he's based in Wales, fire him a PM...

(Although it is certainly helpful to add your location to your profile, so that it's obvious...)

It maybe worth having a poke about around the sills as well and do a cost benefit analysis whether to keep it or save it.

My old 04 plate only had an MOT advisory for corrosion on the sills but when I had a more indepth look the rot had spread to the inside as well.
Got a quote for repairing the work from someone who restores MX5's (they rot in the same way due to similar construction) and it came to over £2500 to do it properly and paint so it wasn't economically viable even though in my heart I wanted to save it.

Mind won over heart so I decided to cut my losses, I found a low mileage non runner Kuro for £300 which was in a decent condition bodywork wise and then swapped out my old (rebuilt) engine into it then rust proofed it so hopefully will last for a while to come.

I appreciate all the responses, I should have joined this forum last year! I guess it will be a close run thing in deciding whether or not its economically viable. We have had the car since new and with 40,000 miles it still looks and feel really good but I just don't know how far the corrosion goes but would be gutted to cut my loses.

Dazzza whats the name of the place in Stamford?

MI60o0, what about these sills from Shambo, I have been in touch with him but having difficulties as I believe he has started a new job, what would you want for the half sills?

Let me have a think then.

I am in London some days perhaps I could grab them in person?

How come you never fitted them and scrapped your RX8?
